Well, not really, but he so totally could have if he wanted to. The former UFC Welterweight Champion came by the Marvel offices yesterday to take a look around and generally be a fan. He's a big Marvel comics reader, so we gave him the tour and then he and and I chatted for a bit. These photos are just some fun out-takes, there'll be more with Matt soon on Marvel.com and we'll post the the full video interview around the time of his May 23 fight against Matt Hughes. Enjoy the photos.
I'm a big Deadpool fan from way back. And from what I gather by talking to fans on Twitter, at conventions and the buzz we get for Deadpool coverage on Marvel.com, I KNOW I'm far from alone. Of course, my love of tacos is well documented, so when I read DEADPOOL #7, my entire being was flooded with joy.
Writer Daniel Way has been knocking the series out of the park from day one (and I've already blogged about how fantastic Paco Medina's art is), but this really solidified it for me. I always knew, in my heart of hearts, that Wade Wilson was a taco man, a fellow champion of the taqueria (high five to Bob, as well) a lover of the greatest food on Earth.
It's true. I'm a superbighuge nerd for the artistic stylings of a few people and Juan Doe is without a doubt one of them. He breathes so much life into everything he draws, every one of his comics just reminds me why I got so excited about the medium in the first place.
I wanted to share the cover art to his latest big Marvel project, SPIDER-MAN & THE HUMAN TORCH IN...BAHIA DE LOS MUERTOS! # 1. Written by Tom Beland, the book comes out March 4 and I seriously urge you all to go out and pick it up. Cool, crazy story and some of my personal favorite Marvel art.
Anyway, enough gushing. I also wanna plug Juan's first solo art show. It opens this Friday and I'm gonna be there to mingle and get tacos in Brooklyn and oggle the gorgeous art on display. If you're in the neighborhood, please come out and say hi to me, Juan and everyone else there. All the info is on the second image at left, but you can also head to www.juandoe.com for more Doe-ish goodness.
I found an Iron Man Stark Industries flash drive while cleaning my desk earlier this week and decided I'd like to give it away. But, like all good things, ya gotta work for it.
So, with New York Comic Con going on for the next three days, I've devised a scavenger hunt. First person to complete the hunt (rules below), gets the awesome flash drive. After that, I'll be giving away variant edition comics, stacks of comics and other stuff from my personal collection. I give because I love. So, here's what ya gotta do:
There are four things you need to complete my New York Comic Con Scavenger Hunt:
1. A comic book with M.O.D.O.K. in it. Any comic. I love M.O.D.O.K. and you should too. And I'll gladly trade any comic I have for a M.O.D.O.K. comic.
2. A copy of any Wizard Magazine that I contributed to. I was an editor there from 2003 to 2006, so there are over 30 issues of the mag with my name in the masthead and I'd imagine you can pick one up on the cheap at New York Comic Con. I'll also accept the recent edition of Marvel's Greatest Collections freebie. Wolverine's on the cover and there's a goofy picture of me on page 13.
3. A photo with you and either TheRealCerilli, JimMcCann or Damiella. They'll all be at New York Comic Con, most likely around the Marvel booth and I'll gladly accept a cell phone photo, digital photo, polaroid or whatever other proof you can show me you met them.
4. You have to find me. Should be simple, yeah? I could be at a panel, at the Marvel booth or roaming the floor. Ya can't win if ya can't find me!
Sound good? Any questions or concerns, message me via Twitter. I'll be checking it throughout the weekend, probably won't be able to see the comments here.
Amidst all the wild stuff going on in the weeks leading up to the Holidays, I was able to complete one of my goals in life: Write a comic book story published by Marvel Comics.
Here in my office we handle all things digital for Marvel, including Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. When my boss John Cerilli asked us for holiday-themed story ideas for the Marvel Digital Holiday Special, I came up with a quick little tale about a wayward Skrull who insinuates himself into humanity during the holidays. When we whittled down all the ideas, mine was one of the few approved.
To say I was elated would be an understatement. I suggested that the art be handled by my friend Juan Doe, who also happens to be one of my favorite artists. Somehow the stars aligned, everything came together and we created a creepy little tale called "Last Christmas" that I'm very proud of.
Unfortunately, the story was only free through the holidays, and you can only see it now if you subscribe to Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. If you can, read it here, because along with "Last Christmas," you can read a bunch of other funny, touching and great stories.
If you're not a subscriber, then you can at least enjoy the three rough sketches Juan sent in before turning in his final pages. I tell ya, it still blows my mind. Make mine Marvel.
At left, you can see HELLCAT artist David Lafuente's 2008 Christmas card. Now, it's not really a Marvel card, but it's such a beautiful image I couldn't NOT show it to the world.
David's only been working for us for a short amount of time, but he's blown me away with everything he's done artistically. He's also extremely personable and makes me laugh with his high-spirited, wild-eyed exuberance. David's one of the good guys.
I interact with tons of awesome people on Twitter, including a bunch of Marvel writers and artists. So a few weeks before Christmas, my pal Brian Denham—artist on IRON MAN: HYPERVELOCITY, NOVA and more—asked who my favorite Marvel character is. Naturally, I told him M.O.D.O.K. and he offered to make me my very own M.O.D.O.K. Sketch Cap!
I gladly accepted and a few weeks later, I received the sweet headgear. Brian makes these awesome Sketch Caps on the side and I'm super happy I scored one. So while I didn't get to show it off before, now is the time for the world to see it in all its M.O.D.O.K.-ian glory. Alas, I don't think I'll ever wear it for fear of sweating in it and ruining it. Oh well, it's still totally awesome.
Oh, so what does S.C.D.O.L.C. stand for? Sketch Cap Designed Only for Looking Cool, of course!
Okay, I'm a little late with the Holiday blogging. My apologies, but the days leading up to Christmas and New Year's were just insane here at Marvel. Busy, busy, busy. Doubly busy for me since I was heading out with my fiancée Elizabeth to Louisiana for a much-needed vacation from 12/24 to 1/3.
Unfortunately, I didn't get to post a few things I'd really wanted to before I left. But on the bright side, it gives me three fun posts to file under the Holiday Hangover banner! Huzzah!
I got a handful of really nice Holiday cards and I wanted to post two of them here on the blog. The first, at left, is from Paco Medina, one of my favorite artists. He floored me with his work on NEW X-MEN, then rocked it on NEW WARRIORS and is now absolutely killing as the artist on DEADPOOL. Honestly, he's quickly become one of my all-time favorite 'Pool artists (alongside McGuinness, Liefeld and Brown) and this card makes me actually enjoy the holiday insanity.
