The making of the cover from hell: part 2
2007-07-20 13:54:07
Part two in our trip into the abyss ;-)

Join me as I spend more of this past Saturday beating my head against the ol' art table.

6- Okay, a couple of hours later and frustration and is setting in big time. I have a serious caffeine buzz going and I better get something to eat soon before I get a mean case of the low blood sugar shakes. Here’s a sheet full of frustration doodles. Some are group pairings, some are just quickie figure studies, I’ll take anything that works at this point and while the group doodles are okay, they’re just boring the heck out of me.

7-Some Maverick quick figure studies. These are so horrific that I’m embarrassed to show them to you, I guess that’s why I decided to show them. Ahhh, I feel cleansed.

8-A leaping figure. I figured if right to left wasn’t working, perhaps a change of direction might give me some inspiration. Nope, kill me now!

9-Okay, here I felt like I was onto something. I really dug the figure at the top right. Something about the way it’s cropped and the motion of the leap that’s starting to make me think. the crop is intriguing because it's breaking some rules but it's speaking to me. If you look closely, you can see where it started out being Maverick and then later I erased the guns and made it Wolverine. I then inserted a zoomed up version of the standing Maverick sketch I did in #5 and the Omega Red from # 4 except that I reversed Omega in order to make it work better.

10- Still not happy, I went back to ground and thought that perhaps Wolvie should be more front and center and leaping at the reader. Man, it's boring me and if I'm bored then the reader is going to be doubly bored.

11-Okay, now I’m using the idea from #2 coupled with #9 only now the top left figure is Maverick once again. I’m feeling a bit bipolar here.

More tomorrow and some answers to your question a bit later.

See ya in ther funnybooks,

YOU CAN DO IT!!! *Takes out pom poms* Yayyy you can do it!! Rah rah rah! ................Okay that was pathetic, but I really think you are close. :o) .........If its any consolation I really like #9 out of all of them. I wish I could help with suggestions or something but my idea well is dry. Sorry.

I feel your pain
Oh, Joe. I feel your pain. As an amateur illo in college trying to do a weekly page for the school paper while managing immature residents and closed-loop equations for microprocessor systems, I had flattened my forehead either banging my head on the table or collapsing onto it in utter exhaustion at 4 AM.

Here's a thought - put Red front and center, crouching, and Mav and Wolvie behind him. It's a different visual cue, especially moving fan-fave Wolvie back more.

Can't wait to see the final cover!!!

Suggestion
Hey Joe, just an idea. I know you have a lot on your hands, but maybe this might help. There was a recent cover to New Avengers that gave me the idea. The cover had Wolverine closest to the front, with half of him sticking into the picture and half of him cut off, with the other Avengers in the background. The suggestion: Wolverine, maybe just his face, or half of it, closest to the front and taking up part of the page. In the background, Red and Maverick (maybe something like no. 9, that was pretty sweet)

Anyway, good luck. Your other covers for the series were really sweet, so I trust you to come up with something good.
