The making of the cover from hell: part 4
2007-07-20 14:03:41
Sunday evening and I finally figure it out.

17-The one drawing I keep coming back to is the weirdly cropped figure at the top right of the cover. I do another version of it only this time I make it Omega Red. Why not, I tried everyone else ;-) Hey, this works!

18-I get another sheet of paper and I tighten Omega up a bit, this is looking better and will enable me to use his tentacles as a design element. What I dig most about it is how his head is half cropped yet his eyes are looking directly at the viewer from that little corner of the cover.

19- Okay, yet another drawing. I put the Omega Red concept in with Wolvie and figure I can use the original sketch of Omega #4 and turn that into Maverick. Nope, doesn’t work. The new Omega works with Wolvie but that Maverick is just laying there not relating to either of the other two. Hey, wait a minute, not relating? That’s when it hits me as Omega stares from the top corner and Wolvie looks away from us towards the bottom right. What if they’re all falling but looking off in three different directions and if they were surrounded by attackers?

20- In my minds eye I have this idea of Maverick looking off to the far left of the cover and do these two small sketches. I work with both in the layout and it becomes clear that the bottom one will be perfect just as long as I adjust his left leg as it comes down the page.

21- So, I do a detailed sketch of Maverick, just to make sure that the anatomy has some movement and I get that crazy costume right.

22- And here’s the final layout, now to get to work on the actual cover. Check out tomorrow’s New Joe Friday on www.newsarama.com for the final penciled piece.

By the time I got to this point it was pretty late Sunday evening. On Monday I enlarged the image, lightboxed and finished the piece in about four hours. If you want to see how it turned out, check out this tomorrow's New Joe Fridays on www.newsarma.com, it'll be posted there.

Hope you enjoyed this inside look.

See ya in the funnybooks,
JQ
EEK!
I like #22 the most.
It looks like Omega Red has forced his way through a crowd. The part of it that catches my eye is the bottom part with Omega Red horizontally. A good technique.

A headache and a half
Wow. I would have banged my head against the desk repeatedly. But thanks for the inside look! You really deserve some applause,..........*applause* ...........because after all that frustration you came up with something that looks really great. I like it a lot and like I've said before, I'm glad I haven't taken the covers for granted. This was a lot of hard work. I'll be looking forward to seeing the finished piece 2morrow. Great job, really. ^__^

Dear Joe...
...when will you do a variant cover for Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane? The fans demand it!!

Dynamic
Talk about something being worth the wait! What a fast and action packed piece! I can't wait to see it on the shelf, I'll definately pick it up. Thank you for giving us an inside peek at the workings of a cover piece. It makes the art more valuable to have on a personal level knowing the blood sweat and tears that went into it!

That's why I'm still not a pro

Nice Work!
Thanks for all the insight into your thought process. I've attempted to be an artist over the years, and I know how much talent and work it takes. Good stuff.

I also appreciate how intentional you are about interacting with the fan community. It's very cool. Thanks for your patience in answering so many questions.

Here's mine: How about letting me just sit and watch at a Creative Summit?? I'd even sign a non-disclosure agreement!! Man, would that be awesome...

Ultimate X-Men
hum...so by the latest Joe Fridays it looks like the reunion with Kirkman, Bendis and Carey went well. Can you tell us what's planned to UXM after the Cable arc? New team members, maybe?

And Ultimate Rogue needs a new look! As a talented artist, you should see that the horrid costume and the short hair gotta go! :)

Origins
Dude, great inside look - I was a little relieved to know that sometimes Gods have their frustrating 'communication breakdowns' between their hands and their minds.
Just a wonder, will the Origins variants end with issue 5?
Peace.
