New Comics Day
2007-07-20 11:50:53
Well, Wednesday is here, and that means new comics day…

One of the best things about living in New York is that there is literally a comic book store on my way home. I actually pass Midtown Comics every day on my way to the subway, but I can usually limit myself to only going inside once a week…usually.

You’d think I’d get sick of comics, after working at Marvel all day—but I actually don’t. Plus I get excited about new comics day. It’s a little bonus that hits right in the middle of the week, and gets me over the half-way point to the weekend.

The highlight this week for the Ultimate Office is, of course, the release of Ultimates 2 #11 (yeah, yeah, finally, I know…). Not to go too far into shilling, but this issue is 28 pages packed with…well, I don’t want to give anything away. You’ll have to see for yourself.

Ultimates is (all “this-is-Marvel.com-and-I-have-to-sell-comics” aside) my favorite comic around right now and the only comic I work on that I can read and enjoy the moment it comes out. Most of the rest take a few weeks or months—I’m just too close to the material to have fun reading them, at least for a while. Not that the birth of every issue of Ultimates isn’t a struggle…but the book is that good. Plus, of course, Mark, Bryan, Paul, Laura, and Chris are five of my favorite people in comics…

But the other Marvel book I’m really looking forward to this week is the first issue of Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr.’s The Eternals. I’ve managed to learn next-to-nothing about this series, because I really want to be able to sit back and have a great time reading this one. That said, every time art comes in from inker Danny Miki, I’m hovering right over editor Nick Lowe’s desk, absolutely unable to pull my eyes away…

As an aside—Bryan Hitch asked us to send photocopies of John Jr.’s pencils for issue 1 after he heard how good the art was…and I don’t think Bryan was disappointed!

But it’s always fun to go into a comic book store and just see what else is out (I’m particularly looking forward to Punisher War Journal writer Matt Fraction’s new series, Cassanova [drawn by Gabriel Bá], but I probably shouldn’t mention that in a Marvel Blog…but hey, he’s writing Punisher! He’s family now!). And I’ll check out all the trade paperbacks, see what catches my eye or track down something I missed…and definitely spend too much money…

You are on lucky person
I have to drive about 20 minutes away for my comics but that is a okay because I love reading them but I would love to walk out of work and walk into a comic store. Again how lucky you are.
I have like five comics pre-ordered right now, Civil War 1-3, a spider-man issue 533 and another comic for my wonderful wife.
But thanks for the advice about Ultimates #2 I will have to check that out when I go in.

Hmmm
Love the Ultimate titles! I have to drive a good long way to pick up my comics, but I make it faithfully every week to plop down my [cough] dollars to catch up on my favourite characters from Marvel. Ultimates issue 11 is finally here, but how long untill issue 12?

I totally agree
Man, I actually have to set aside a portion of my pay towards comics. I'm lucky enough to have a comic book store in my neighborhood, and thats my pub, because everyone knows my name. Haha.

But I understand what you are saying, I love Wednesdays as well and it is always thrilling to walk in and smell that new comic book smell. Especially when you've been waiting a whole month (or more) for a certain issue. I have to actually take my younger sister with me so that she can play treasurer and make sure I don't spend over the amount I planned. .........Yea its that bad.....

But its great to hear that you enjoy them as much as we do.

Taboo?
Is it taboo to mention other publishers or their books in a Marvel.com blog or response? I find myself wanting to compare all the time, but then rewording my response to be something else.

In re to TwilightDragon, I too feel my LCS is like a pub; we're all friends. I was just thinking, wouldn't it be great if there was a comic shop that was actually a pub!?

Loving Wednesdays
Every Wednesday feels like Christmas all over again. You wake up and you remember, "Hey, its New Comics Day" and you get all excited. Sure, you have to fork over some of that hard earned cash, but boy is it worth it. Cheers to you guys at Marvel for making Wednesday one of my favorite days of the week.

A case of the Wednesdays
New comics day makes getting through the week a lot less draining. I picked up The Eternals No.1 and am very intrigued by the story so far, and of course the art is terrific. Next week should be solid, with Civil War: Front Line No.2, Wolverine No.43, and the Amazing Spider-Man No. 533 all hitting the shelves.

My new favorate day
Since i've begun collecting comics again, after 10 years, wednesdays have become festive and pure joy especialy now that there is a Siver Surfer title out thats off the hook and a Civil War that speaks to the issues of the day.
I stopped collecting comics after my collection of Silver Surfer comics was destroyed in a flood *SOB*SOB*

finances being what they are...
"This is not a library" (good thing I can read through most comics in less than two minutes flat) "Sorry, ehe" (replace comic - buy ciggarettes)

What I am saying is that I read comics at the kwiky mart, grocery hut, and Powels. Powels... actually lets you kinda treat them like a library. Nice of em - of course I have a cup of coffee - something you can't do at every library.

Then of course sometimes I go to the library - they have lots of comics - locally they are not all put together.

I have occassionally "shared" a few scanned in issues, but I kid you not I actually felt dirty - I do like to support you guys.

Mostly though I like the collections! ENTIRE STORIES! All in one book. Cup of Joe at the Border Barn Bookseller and a "Ultimate number sumthing or other" sigh, fine afternoon, I tell you twice! A fine afternoon!

she hulk
Bruce gave her a blood transfusion, as no other donors of her blood type were available; the radioactive blood mutated Jennifer as it had her cousin, transforming her into the She-Hulk.

Although Jennifer was at first savage while in her form as She-Hulk, she eventually gained the same intelligence she had as the normal Jennifer Walters. She quickly came to appreciate the confidence and assertiveness that had come with being She-Hulk. For a long time, she felt more comfortable in her form as She-Hulk than in her "normal" form as Jennifer. But she has gradually grown comfortable in both forms, and realized that she has much to offer the world in both her forms. After a brief solo career, she joined the Avengers and temporarily replaced the Thing in the Fantastic Four.

During her tenure with the Fantastic Four, the She-Hulk had to prevent a radiation leak in a downed S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. This radiation exposure apparently mutated Jennifer to the point that she could not transform back into her original form. But this was an agreeable turn of events for her, since she preferred her She-Hulk form anyway. It was revealed much later that the "genetic block" was in fact purely psychological, shortly before a similar block locked her in non-Hulk form. That block proved to be temporary.
After the Fantastic Four , the She-Hulk rejoined the Avengers and joined the staff of District Attorney Blake Tower, where she met Louise "Weezi" Mason, formerly the Golden Age super heroine called the Blonde Phantom; during this period, she discovered that Mason had manipulated Towers into hiring She-Hulk so that Mason could again star in a comic book and thus avoid dying of old age. Mason's husband, also a former comic book character, had passed away three years ago, but other, more popular characters from the era, such as Captain America and Namor the Sub-Mariner, were still around.

While doing some legal work for Heroes for Hire, she also went on a few adventures with them and spent some time dating Luke Cage. Later She-Hulk was a member of the short lived hero group the Fantastic Force.

Jennifer currently works as a lawyer for the Superhuman Law division of the New York law firm of Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg, & Holliway. Now able to change forms at will again, Jennifer is rediscovering she has sometimes has wildly different views and opinions in each form, where as the She-Hulk she has come out publically in favor of the recent Superhuman Registration Act, yet as Jennifer Walters she understands the views of those against the Act.
