THE NO. 1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY!!!
2008-03-13 16:42:34
NATE: I can’t believe you.

JORDAN: … That little girl isn’t around, is she?

NATE: Nah, she’s over in Lauren’s office.
I can’t BELIEVE that I told you about The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series of books being adapted into an HBO series, and you didn’t get as excited as me!

JORDAN: True. Probably because I’ve never heard of it. You might as well have said to me “They’re making a movie of Journey of the Turkey-Hound!” No idea what you’re talking about.

NATE: Philistine!
The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (I’m gonna start calling it just No. 1) is about Mma Ramotswe, the only lady detective in Botswana (which is in Africa). She knows nothing about detective work, just kinda picks it up as she goes along. The stories are about her becoming a deft hand at solving mysteries and about the love she feels for Africa and its people.
It’s by Alexander McCall Smith, and he’s written a TON of sequels. AND I found out that HBO has decided to give No. 1 a 13-episode first-season run, co-written by Anthony Minghella (The Talented Mr. Ripley, The English Patient) and Richard Curtis (Four Weddings & A Funeral, Love Actually)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And they cast Jill Scott and Stringer from The Wire!
HOW are you not pumped about this!!!!!!!????????

JORDAN: Ok, having heard the two writers, that is pretty cool news. Richard Curtis also worked on most of Black Adder, which was wonderful. Although, just the general idea of a Botswana detective lady doesn’t exactly scream “Amazing!” But given the talent level involved, it sounds worth checking out.

NATE: I would like to state, for the record, that I had to edit your last response. It had about seven typos.

JORDAN: If by seven you mean two. Maybe I was just so overwhelmed by the intensity of this news, I was typing out of control.

NATE: We should get Marvel to do the comic adaptation!

JORDAN: Ah! You’ve brought it around to comics! But… I doubt that will happen.

NATE: Well, not with that kind of attitude, Negative Nancy. Let’s do some casting! Who draws good Africa?

JORDAN: We don’t have many Africa-based comics. Just Black Panther, right? But, what is the tone of this series? Is it funny? Light? Serious? Thrilling?

NATE: It’s light-hearted. There are hardships, people living in poverty and such, and there are the problems with the cases themselves, but Mma is such a fundamentally good person and the descriptions of the location are so rich and warm, you can’t help but feel good while ya read.
Let’s see…Brian Hitch does good landscapes.

JORDAN: But I don’t think of his work as light-hearted. How about Alan Davis? His work is beautiful, and he can draw a very warm, caring person well.

NATE: Ooooooooooh. GOOD idea! Mr. Davis, do you wanna draw the comic book adaptation of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency?

ALAN DAVIS: No.

JORDAN: Folks—he actually phoned Alan Davis to ask him. Four hour time difference and all.

NATE: I gotta have my creative team in place! Who else?

JORDAN: Ryan Ottley. He did a great Africa Sequence in Invincible.

NATE: Nope. Nope. I just realized who should do it. Kyle Baker.

JORDAN: Okay, yeah, that is pretty good. But is he going to write it as well, or just do art chores?

NATE: He’s an awfully good writer…hrm…I dunno. I gotta go work on SON OF HULK. We’ll pick this up later.
Aren’t you glad I didn’t have Katie zap you?

JORDAN: Yes, yes, I- wait, you were HAVING her zap me?!?

NATE: Ummmmm…
Alright...
So, that's what you read instead of Marvel Comics, eh?

About this blog:
By day, he’s a mild-mannered comic book editor! By night, he’s an obsessive sports fan! By early morning, he drinks coffee and then runs! He’s Nathan Cosby, and he has thoughts about things. This is them.

About the author:
When Associate Editor Nathan Cosby is not thinking about football, he edits Marvel’s All-Ages books, including the Marvel Adventures line (Spidey, FF, Avengers, Super Heroes), X-Men and Wolverine First Class, Franklin Richards, Mini Marvels, and Power Pack, works on the Marvel Illustrated and Stephen King books, does the Custom Comics, and runs Super Hero Squad. There’s like 20 other things he does, but he’s bored with typing this.
