Editor's Job
2009-01-20 18:45:38
“What do you do all day, Nate?”

Glad you asked, no one. Lots of people don’t understand what the job of an editor entails. So here’s what I did Monday (or what I can remember) so you can understand why I don’t want to talk about comics at the end of the day:

-Read scripts for MARVEL ADVENTURES SUPER HEROES 12 and 16, WOLVERINE FIRST CLASS 14 and 15, Chris Giarrusso’s Hawkeye and the Kingdom of the Crimson Crown for the ASSISTANT-SIZED MARVEL SPECTACULAR (FUNNY), more Super Hero Squad strips. Then assigned artists for all of them. Giarrusso complained about his deadline, again. So I had to change it, again.

-Got covers started for WOLVERINE FIRST CLASS 16, PRIDE & PREJUDICE 2, MARVEL ADVENTURES THE AVENGERS 37 and 38, MARVEL ADVENTURES FANTASTIC FOUR 48, WOLVERINE NOIR 2 (don’t edit that one, but I have to manage the beautiful Dennis Calero’s schedule), MARVEL ADVENTURES SUPER HEROES 22

-Went over the new plan for the sequel to X-MEN FIRST CLASS

-Made lettering notes on WIZARD OF OZ 3

-Ballooned WOLVERINE FIRST CLASS 12 and 13

-Ballooned the last five pages of MARVEL ADVENTURES SUPER HEROES 8 that Craig Rousseau gave me today (look, they’re pretty), gave to the letterer

-Read a bad writing sample, followed by an equally bad writing sample. Note to bad writers: Please don’t write.

-Called Chris Eliopoulos, begged him to turn in a script for the new AWESOME mini-series that he’s writing. He said he’d be done last week. He lied. Begged him to write the first page. He said he would. Waited two hours for it.

-Ate a salad.

-Started thinking of a recap for WOLVERINE FIRST CLASS 12 and 13.

-Gave colorists interior pages for DR. DOOM AND THE MASTERS OF EVIL 2, MARVEL ADVENTURES FANTASTIC FOUR 45, ODYSSEY 6, MARVEL ADVENTURES SUPER HEROES 8, WOLVERINE FIRST CLASS 12, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE 1

-Made a goatee out of napkins and attached it on my face with Ralph Macchio’s tape, went to show the head Marketing guy, who is VERY bravely trying to grow a goatee. Told him that I only looked 3% more ridiculous than him.

-Hired a new artist to draw an issue of MARVEL ADVENTURES SUPER HEROES featuring She-Hulk.

-Hired Chris Sotomayor to color Chris Eliopoulos’ new mini-series. When I told Soto the name of the mini, he thought I was lying. Wasn’t.

-Met my girlfriend outside and bought her lunch at 4pm because she forgot to take her wallet with her today. Pretty sure she’s just dating me for my looks.

-Heard about something going on with Barack Obama on the cover of Spider-Man. Found out Mark Waid didn’t write the issue, so stopped paying attention.

-Found out Bill Simmons posted a new podcast, made a mental note to download when I get home.

-Read some more Super Hero Squad strip scripts, gave them to an artist.

-Ballooned X-MEN FIRST CLASS FINALS 2

-Worked on the recap for X MEN NOIR 4

-Verified art for a Custom book was following script correctly.

-Took an inker off of one project, put a much faster inker on the same project.

-Called a REALLY slow penciler that didn’t pick up, told them if I didn’t see any pages by Wednesday, was giving those pages to someone else.

-Thought of ways to bring back SuperPro.

-Approved the first cover sketch for THOR: GODS OF THUNDER.

-Went home.

-Downloaded 3 episodes of "Friday Night Lights," Season 3.

-Went to a vegetarian restaurant where they claimed to make “meat” made out of soy. Ordered the BBQ “chicken.” Swallowed 1/3 of it before surrendering. Wanted to prove to my girlfriend that I could be open-minded. Failed.
MORE SUPERPRO PLS
Thanks, Sam

Wow
I've genuinely wondered dozens of times what a Marvel Editor's day consists of. Thanks for taking the time to fill us all in. And for actually doing it with a sense of humor. Really though, it's not at all as glamorous as the Associate Editor title would suggest. In fact, that seems like a whole buttload of work to truck through. And I know from experience that napkin goatees are nowhere near as simple to craft as one would think.

Hope you were able to download today's (Tuesday's) Simmons podcast as well. He dropped two in a row for his faithful listeners. Look forward to the next post.

What, you didn't ...
have to attend any meetings? Any day I can get through that doesn't involve attending at least one mind numbing, soul destroying meeting is a good day.

About this blog:
By day, he’s a mild-mannered comic book editor! By night, he’s an obsessive sports fan! By early morning, he drinks coffee and then runs! He’s Nathan Cosby, and he has thoughts about things. This is them.

About the author:
When Associate Editor Nathan Cosby is not thinking about football, he edits Marvel’s All-Ages books, including the Marvel Adventures line (Spidey, FF, Avengers, Super Heroes), X-Men and Wolverine First Class, Franklin Richards, Mini Marvels, and Power Pack, works on the Marvel Illustrated and Stephen King books, does the Custom Comics, and runs Super Hero Squad. There’s like 20 other things he does, but he’s bored with typing this.
