Son of Editor's Job
2009-01-23 12:58:16
So after I wrote my last entry, my editor responded:

You usually don’t mention comics that much, so I haven’t gone over this with you, but we put comic titles in all caps on Marvel.com. TV shows, movies, those are in quotes. If you can remember, please try and follow along.

Amazing that I’ve gone this long without writing a heavily comic-based entry.

Anyway, if you see any of the books in all caps in this entry, it’s because he went in an capped ‘em. If you’re NOT reading this, it’s because he rejected this entry because I didn’t cap ‘em. [Editor's note: I had my intern capitalize 'em. Eat it, Cosby!]

Here’s most of what I did on Wednesday:

-Ran while listening to the new Bill Simmons podcast with Chuck Klosterman. I’ve never read anything by Chuck, but he seems to bring out the best in Simmons.
They started talking about writing. Chuck was intrigued by the idea of a writer spending so much time on an assignment, researching, thinking, typing…hours, days, months, years…and then when the project’s done and submitted, a writer pretty much forgets about it, dumps it, moves on, has nothing to do with it anymore, and yet that writing lives on beyond his interest. It was kinda fascinating. So a writer’s job is kind of like the machine that makes Twinkies. It makes a Twinkie, fills it with delicious cream inside, packages it, then goes on to the next Twinkie as if that earlier Twinkie had never existed. Deep.

-Got to work, answered 47 emails.

-Set up lineups for the four books I’ve got this week.

-The artist drawing Chris Eliopoulos’ new miniseries had already drawn the one page he wrote for the first issue. So I begged Chris to write more while the artist made two revisions on the page. The artist finished the revisions before Chris gave me another page. Decided that Jeph Loeb and Chris Eliopoulos are the only writers that can actually WRITE slower than their artists can DRAW.

-Gave Roy Thomas’ lettering notes to Joe Caramagna for THE ODYSSEY #6.

-Designed the recaps for WIZARD OF OZ #3.

-Edited text for THE ODYSSEY #6 recap.

-Checked coloring continuity on Artur Fujita's THE ODYSSEY #6 pages.

-Hired Dennis Calero for another WOLVERINE FIRST CLASS cover.

-Gave direction for the back pages of MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN#48 and MARVEL ADVENTURES SUPER HEROES #8.

-Ballooned some of MARVEL ADVENTURES FANTASTIC FOUR #45

-Hired new artist for MARVEL ADVENTURES FANTASTIC FOUR #46

-Ran X-MEN: FIRST CLASS FINALS #2 to proofreading and read-out.

-Gave notes to Niko Henrichon for the remaining three variant covers he’s doing for the project I can’t talk about yet.

-Avoided a conference call by getting notes via email. I LOVE avoiding conference calls. Avoiding conference calls make me happier than ice cream.

-Pulled reference from a Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends website, followed by photo reference for a Lhasa Apso.

-Got a sandwich and tea. Forgot to wear my coat.

-Ran MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN #48 to final proofreading.

-Requested paper for Derec Donovan and Dario Brizuela so that can get to drawing ANT-MAN and SUPER HERO SQUAD.

-Noticed there are a lot more interns around now. Made mental note to wear hat when walking around office, to avoid eye contact.

-Went to get Tom Brevoort to sign the cover for THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF OZ #1 second printing, saw the NFL SuperPro one-shot on his desk. Asked him why he had that. He said it was because of something he’s doing on his blog. Think his feelings were kinda hurt because I’ve never read his blog.

-Got Chris Sotomayor's sweet colors from enhanced pencils for the cover MARVEL ADVENTURES THE AVENGERS #36.

-Waited on lettering for MARVEL ADVENTURES THE AVENGERS #33, but Dave Sharpe said he’s getting over a cold so it’ll be a little late. Remembered that Dave Sharpe is a HUGE Viking-type man that could step on me, so didn’t complain.

-Received Dennis Calero's gorgeous DARK TOWER variant cover. Can't show you yet.

-Got more layouts for DR. DOOM AND THE MASTERS OF EVIL #2 by Patrick Scherberger. Told him to hurry up. If you're reading this, Patrick...hurry up.

-Checked storytelling on the first 11 pencil pages of MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN's A-story by Sanford Greene. Not bad.

-Turned down fully-paid invitation to a comic convention to Granada. Would’ve liked the trip, but would’ve had to go to the convention.

-Talked to Jeff Parker about Thor's helmet. Parker hates when Thor's wings don't continue down below the helmet's bottom portion. He says it looks like a Norse Yamaka.

-Went over layouts for the Free Comic Book Day WOLVERINE issue by Gurihiru.

-Got more X-MEN: FIRST CLASS FINALS #3 pencil breakdowns from Amilcar Pinna. Like writing his name. Amilcar Pinna. Amilcar Pinna. On of these pages has the X-Men drinking hot beverages (a Parker touchstone).

-Read Roger Langridge’s revisions to the 8-page story he’s written for MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN #50, drawn by Sonny Liew. Really fun. Thank God he’s doing the Muppets book. Might make me want to read comics.

-Left at 5 to go watch a hockey game in New Jersey, because there’s no real sports happening right now. Begged my girlfriend to never make me go watch hockey ever again. I view hockey like the Olympics. Every four years, I’ll watch five minutes of it. But how do people stay conscious watching this game? First off, you can’t see the puck. Pucks should be, bare minimum, the size of a Belgian waffle, so people in the nosebleeds can tell what’s going on. Second, no pads. Add a little danger. Third, what the heck is the deal with Power Plays? You get to take one team’s player out, so it’s an uneven field? That’s like having the pitcher throw the baseball, but the offensive team’s being penalized for one at-bat, so there’s no hitter. All the pitcher’s got to do is throw strikes. Sigh. I’m trying SO HARD to not miss football.
I'm afraid Spidey is going to impale himself on Wolverine's claws in that MA:A cover. Storm looks like she has lockjaw. And Cap seems to be channeling Zap Brannigan. I trust this will all be explained in the issue.

Keep up the good work!

Jordan
While I appreciate the more frequent postings (2 in one week!!!), where is Jordan and why isn't he explaining comics to you anymore?

read the blog because eliopoulos implored people to avenge his name for all the trashing you did. not going to avenge him (sorry, chris... slow writers get no sympathy), but i do feel compelled to correct your spelling... it should be "norse YARMULKE"... for a bit i thought "yamaka" was a knock-off japanese piano, which, in the norse style, might actually look good on thor's head.

don't worry, i'm under no delusions that this will help us be friends.

Foolkiller?
You must be under strict orders not to mention the new all-ages Foolkiller title.

Dang
All I do is go to School. Come home. Get on Marvel or Youtube. Read about two comics. Then go to the gym (Somedays). Then come home and play Video games.

About this blog:
By day, he’s a mild-mannered comic book editor! By night, he’s an obsessive sports fan! By early morning, he drinks coffee and then runs! He’s Nathan Cosby, and he has thoughts about things. This is them.

About the author:
When Associate Editor Nathan Cosby is not thinking about football, he edits Marvel’s All-Ages books, including the Marvel Adventures line (Spidey, FF, Avengers, Super Heroes), X-Men and Wolverine First Class, Franklin Richards, Mini Marvels, and Power Pack, works on the Marvel Illustrated and Stephen King books, does the Custom Comics, and runs Super Hero Squad. There’s like 20 other things he does, but he’s bored with typing this.
