Marvel.com is back in gear after last week’s technical difficulties, and just in time for me to promote one of the coolest custom comic projects I’ve worked on yet: WORDGIRL.
The WordGirl comic is being distributed exclusively through schools, so right now, you can’t purchase it from any retail venue. But the excellent animated show that the comic is based on is available to anyone with TV or internet access.
WordGirl is produced by PBS Kids. The educational goal is to teach vocabulary, but the execution is as smart and enjoyable for adults as much as kids, if not more so. To me, it hearkens back to the glory days of Sesame Street, and the tradition it started of being innovative, clever and respectful of its audience’s intelligence. To wit, a couple of WordGirl villains are the Butcher, who attacks by throwing meat, and Chuck, the Evil Sandwich-Making Guy. Also, one of the main characters is a monkey.
This Friday, November 23rd—the day after Thanksgiving—PBS Kids will be airing a WordGirl Marathon on PBS stations everywhere. Check your local listings for times and channels, or watch it in New York’s WLIW at 4 p.m. or L.A.’s KCET at 2 p.m.
If you can’t catch the marathon on Friday, you can still see WordGirl episodes according to your local PBS schedule, or online at http://pbskids.org/wordgirl/.
Sweet Wow, this is really awesome. Comic books in education? Can't ask for anything better. Will this WordGirl comic be openly available to high schools?
