The People's Award
2008-01-17 17:15:52
Back in the office for a brief moment after our big Spidey Summit, which went swimmingly. I'll no doubt tell you more over the next few days and weeks about chatting wtih Bob Gale about Eric Stoltz's role in BACK TO THE FUTURE, as well as Bob's audience-participation film MISTER PAYBACK. But as has too-often been the case this past week, I'm too shot to write up a real blog entry today.

But there is one item that simply cannot wait.

Like many of you, I'm dealing with the fallout of the writer's guild strike. I support the position of the writers in terms of their compensation, and hope that they can reach an equitable deal and return to work in short order. But among the casualties of the strike was the Golden Globe Awards, the production cancelled for this year.

Such a vacuum cannot be allowed to stand.

So I'm proposing we give out our own presentations, for assorted categories pertaining to comics. The Golden Globes are typically referred to as the People's Awards, the awards most likely to recognize a popular work, and not turn a blind eye towards it simply because it did good business and was popular. And when it comes to doing good numbers in the comic book world, I can think of no better representative than HEROES' own Jeph Loeb.

That's right, I am announcing THE GOLDEN LOEB AWARDS.

Here's how it works: everybody reading this blog is welcome to suggest categories and nominees in the response area below. In a week's time, I'll winnow the field down to a final list, post it here, and we'll open it up to a vote. Nominees are open to work published during the previous year, 2007.

Please note: Jeph Loeb himself is not prohibited from being a winner in the Golden Loeb Awards simply because our prized trophy (provided by Nick Lowe and Molly Lazer) looks very much like him.

And please, let's avoid making this yet another endless attempt for people to be snarky. I'm looking for genuine work people genuinely liked in 2007--I don't need to read another post about how you're all still mad about "One More Day" or ULTIMATES 3 or whatever. There are plenty of places for that, even on this very blog--but this entry isn't one of them.

Let the nominating begin!

Tom B
Best-dressed baldie. I nominate Brian K. Vaughan.

Non-snarky, but serious question
I repeat, I'm trying to be non-snarky, but no matter which way I write it, it comes out that way. So, here's my question which I think is worthy of discussion at least.

Isn't Marvel doing exactly the same thing with dotcomics that is the key reason the writers are on strike? No creator residuals for "new media" like internet downloads? I noted that you said "I" and not Marvel "support the writer's position", but it still seems a little hypocritcal being on a Marvel board.

I try to show my love for Epting's art whenever I can. He's the best artist in comics today, and his covers on Captain America, especially since he started painting them, are all at masterpiece levels.

I just can't see how the artist who put Marvel Comics on his back while Captain America 25 was getting national media coverage, could possibly NOT have a guaranteed spot as a nomination. He should win, too! Credibility counts for The Golden Loebs!

About Eric Stoltz and BttF
Eric Stoltz was the original choice for the role of Marty McFly. They even made test footage. But in the end, the role went to Michael J Fox. And the rest is history. Nevertheless, it's a cool "What might have been" story.

Hey Mr. B,

Just a question, whatever happened to that 'Cage' miniseries to be designed by Tartakovsky? I was super hyped for it, yet no word ever since it's announcement ages back

Posted by dp_lombardo on 2008-01-20 01:34:36
It's back - thanks! I would also add Armor (Astonishing) as a Breakout character for 07. Even if Captain America tallies out as the book of 07 some recognition has to go to the revamp of Iron Fist. With Matt and Bru writing him in as a legacy character, he arrived on the scene with a new reason for being. He's to 07 was Nova was to 06. Oh yeah, and definitely add Adi Granov to the list for his Nova Covers. Sorry to see him go but that upcoming Alex Maleev cover is like nothing I've ever seen him do. He can even make Kirby tech look menacing and gritty.

stuckinazkaban's list...
even though it didn't happen this year (or this decade even) the best use of a super power that i've read recently was during Operation Galactic Storm, when Thor (eric masterson version) tapped his hammer on the ground, causing Living Lightning to get sucked right towards Mjorlner, and into the back of one of the Imperial Guard. Its not often that an almost 20 year old comic can make me laugh out loud, but that move, and LL's reaction to it, did the trick
