Bite This.

The most important thing to come out of all of the Marvel/DC Crossovers wasn’t a character or a story—it was a foodstuff.

During one of our many meetings uptown, Mike Carlin took me for lunch over at the Manhattan Chili Company, which then had a restaurant right across the street from the DC offices. They made a damn fine bowl of chili, but the real attraction was their signature appetizer, Hot Honey Bites.

A few months later, having heard my many tales of their goodness, Joe Quesada gave me a gift certificate to the Manhattan Chili Company one Christmas. This then led to the regular event known in these parts as “Chili Mondays.” The first Monday of every month, a select crew of Marvelites would trek across town to the local Chili Company location and chow down on some Honey Bites. We made an event out of it, working our way through the entire menu by ordering the next three chilis in sequence, then voting on them. At the end, we did a victory lap of the three best chilis the outfit made.

Some months ago, the Manhattan Chili Company closed their doors, seemingly forever. Chili Monday was no more.

But just a couple of weeks back, I discovered that there was a branch of the operation set up in Grand Central Station. And—and this was the important part—Marvel was within its delivery radius. So once again, we’re now Chili-positive.

(Don’t feel too bad for Mike Carlin, though. While the Chili Company situated outside the DC offices also closed its doors, DC is also within the strike radius for the Grand Central store—and I made it a point to send him over a bunch of Honey Bites the last time we placed a big order.)

More later. Maybe even about comics.

Nice
May have to see if they have a chain where I am at.

I just started working again in NYC, and it's amazing to find all the cheap eats there. I just had oxtail the other day. Today, a sandwich with bean sprouts in it. Yum!

What's up with Jeph Loeb's Hulk?
I apologise for being off topic with this but I was hoping that Mr. Brevoort could give us an idea of why the new Hulk title is out so infrequently? In the August solicitations there was no issue #6 so eight months into its run we've only gotten five issues (assuming that #s 4 & 5 are released as currently scheduled). I'm really excited to read issues 7, 8 & 9 which Mr. Loeb mentioned would be split between Art Adams and Frank Cho but the wait is killing me.

Again, I apologise for being off topic but this blog is one of the few places I know of where folks from Marvel occasionally answer fan questions.

something disgusted me with the fact that some of bloggers suggestions can actually feed your families.
That's just awful.
Tell me it's not true...

Alright then...

You're a lucky man, Tom. I'd love to have a place near me where I could get a consistently good bowl of chili. The nearest place to me with chili is Wendy's and I'm almost certain that stuff doesn't actually qualify as chili (or food).

Marvel Mine
good apetite, I had a question openly off-topic about the Sentry, wich is a character I find very interesting but not very well used.It is written that he has the powers of a thousand suns, something like that, in Wikipédia, and I think he deserves at last something like what had been done with the Surfer with Moebius.I wondered if he could made a deal with Galactus, feeding him, and he doesn't have to devour worlds anymore, it feets perfectly with the christlike aspect of his personality.
I rather definetely not understand why with so much powers, he's so often disturbed, 'booh I'm the Void'; and I think that in his ways, 'cause except this weakness, he finally has the same problem that Superman : he doesn't have decent enemies. Which is also a problem of the MU : new vilains. Following that consideration I dare to repeat that Michael Heide had a geniusly idea with 'Masters of Evil'.
friendly yours,

notapotatoe,
I find your concepts very interesting but you should save your ideas for your own restaurant-ticket

Posted by bulgarianyogurt on 2008-05-22 14:28:15
thanks,
I know already what is it to 'lost' ideas.
I had the same problem with my first novel in the 80's, writted directly in english ,about a paramedic in burn out , getting obssessive about the fact not being able to save everybody.
It should have been called 'Lloyd Cole and the Commotions '.

But ,We, Frenchs, are like that.
We give, we give...

Mmmm... chili.

I can't find a decent bowl in my city. But I can still find the best pizza and steak!

And ginger beef is a bit of a specialty in my parts.

That's it! Gotta go find some ginger beef! What are some other local 'specialties' you fellow blog readers like?

Amazing Spider-man
since i could find no email address or letter page on Marvel's site...i just decided to put this here...I hope you dont mind :D

I am writing this message in response to the current Spider-Man story-line "Brand New Day" of which I have many problems with, least of all is that the last 20 years of Spider-Man continuity has been erased. I'm sure many people complaining have raised the question of continuity and the Peter/MJ marriage as the most striking disappointments, I on the other hand, do not believe these to be the worst offenses of this new run. Which is scary as well as exceedingly sad.

I have collected Amazing Spider-Man since I was six years old, I liked the clone saga. The story may have been far-fetched but the issue to issue writing was fun, intelligent and logical enough to understand; Ben Reilly's character development was also very well done. These are the problems of the NEW Spider-Man. Each issue reads as a constant one-liner there is no substance, the entire thing is completely fluff. (with the exception of Zebb Wells two issue run which i enjoyed) The art has been great and from what I can gather Marvel believes this can somehow save the book.

It seems to me that the last 30 years of advancement in story telling has been forgotten, and i feel like I'm reading comic books from the 1960s, and while those issues are important historically none of them are going to win literary awards. I think it would have been more effective to just reprint old issues and not waste time creating inferior new ones. There has been absolutely no character development of Peter Parker or anyone else for that matter (which maybe due to the fact that the supporting characters barely appear for more then 5 panels an issue). For example there was more development in one recent issue of Avengers: Initiative (introducing Boulder) than there has been for all the characters combined in BND since it began.

If the writing had been able to make up for the completely ridiculous circumstances of the book (which used to be based on Science) then I really would not have a problem. I really do not want to see Spider-Man narrate his life like he is on the Discovery Channel in each issue, It seems disrespectful to both the reader and the artist in this age of comic book story telling. I am excited about JRJR's return to Amazing, being as I grew up with him on Spider-Man, but i seriously question again, whether he can save extremely bad and corny dialogue and story telling.

I also have a severe problem with MJ's return at the end of the last issue, It doesn't make sense to bring her back just to be a damsel in distress (I think maybe MJ from the movies has been confused with the strong character she grew to be in the comic). Bringing her back as the trophy chick on the arm of some Hollywood heart throb is devolving the character past what I believe is fair (Joe Q leave her alone please!). MJ had grown so much as a character and to see her portrayed like that really hurts me as a reader and a person.

The last thing I'd like to mention is the complete lack of compelling villains. They have nothing that draws you to them like older spider-man rogues (ie: Green Goblin, Doc Ock, even Man-wolf) It maybe due to the fact that they randomly show up, fight then leave with nothing but empty space and no logical or perceived connection to the weak story lines they are in, or that they are just so hooky that it doesn't even matter if they even looked cool (which they don't).

I guess what it really boils down to is that, regardless of the premise of BND, the real problems of bad storytelling, worthless dialogue, and none existent character development are what is really ruining this run for me and what could hamper any exciting changes (JRJR) in the future. I had once reserved Spider-Man a spot as the last book on my pull-list that I read every week, now I read it first so that the comics after can get the bad taste out of my mouth. I love Spider-Man so much that it is incredibly painful to see it as the laughing stock of Marvel comics where a steady progression of art and storytelling to a more realistic overall universe has left spider-man behind.

Thank you,
Tom Pescatore

Never did like some of those Dc/Marvel crossovers (Except Namor v aquaman, I thought that was funny at times) But to know that there was a benefit of the food variety makes them a time well spent. And I'm sure the chilli business didn't mind either

I see you're still at lunch...

following the Marvel Previews on Newsarama, and the reading of the posters, looks like I'm not the only one to complain about what is done and not done with the Sentry...

already said that
Ann Nocenti and Ted Mc Keever can save BND...

Submissions Response
Please forgive me for my entry being off-subject material. I just have 2 quick questions for Mr. Tom: How long (on average) does it take to receive a response in regard to a query letter? And, does every query letter receive a response?
Thank you for your time.
