Looking forward to seeing what comes next! :)

I kind of liked Charcoal. He was a good B-list supporting character. Neat look, neat powers. I wonder what kind of case the creator thought he had.

Romita Jr. definitely outdid himself with the Thor. I love his work. Both him and his father have been a huge influence for me in my illustrations. I really loved that Avengers run with Busiek and Perez. There was just something very nostalgic about it. It was fun for fun's sake. Where is Perez today? I would TOTALLY buy something by him.

Wow. I was just thinking about that contest.
During that time I was hooked on Thunderbolts. A shame that such a good idea for a contest turned out bad. I guess Marvel would prefer to make all they're characters in-house to prevent such things from happening again.
I would have enjoyed to submit a lot of character ideas.

The old days, simple times, great titles by how they look, but that charcoal villian seems kind of familiar to some DC villian.

I personally thing that with Image comics around today, and the marvel Icon line people should go creator owned, especially with the character rights always in question and are lawyer happy culture now adays. Its just a lot easier so you don't have the whole Neil Gaiman Tod McFarlane case too.

*sniff* I miss the classic Avengers (and the TBolts, for that matter).

Great post! I love this kind of thing Tom.
Speaking of the Busiek/Perez run on the title, any chance you can use your godlike power and influence to get the collections department to put AVENGERS ASSEMBLE Vol. 2 back into print? It's the only one NOT available from that gorgeous hardcover series that reprints the Busiek era, and (considering it contains the Ultron Unleashed story) it is badly missed.

Marvel Universe was a really wonderful title. I'm not entirely sure I could imagine you guys publishing something like it now, to be honest. I love a lot of Marvel content now, but I do miss books like that occasionally.
Actually, I'd probably put the Iron Man/Doom book in that catagory so maybe i should amend things and say that I couldn't imagine you publishing a book like that five years ago. Marvel's a lot broader now than it was a few years back.

Marvel Universe was a fun comic.
I wish Marvel would spend more time exploring its untold history, instead of the new trend of bringing historical characters into the present day.

Marvel Universe seems like a great idea Tom. Since then we've gotten Agents of Atlas, The Sentry, and The Twelve to suggest it may have been ahead of its time.

With the exception of Thor, these were all on my pull list for that month. I still enjoy your output Tom, but for me, this was a great time to be a Marvel fan. I wondered what happened with Charcoal. Seemed weird to kill him off so quickly. I enjoyed the character, too, so was disappointed to see him go.

Interesting...
I wasn't collecting Marvel at the time. I was reading Mad and Cracked, so my comic knowledge of that time was limited. Neat to see it though.
But I have to ask, is it me or do the colours of those examples seem really... bright. Every time I see a comic from that era the colours just seem too bright and vivid to me. Is it just me? Or was there some method behind the madness?

I could be completely way off base here, but if I remember correctly, it was about this time that computer coloring really started to become the norm, and Marvel was using a couple of coloring houses to color a lot of the books. Thus the similarities. Probably my biggest complaint about some of these books. The Heroes for Hire series that was out a few years before this had probably the worst coloring for this timeframe.
