Worst of the Worst - Additional

Received a communication—actually a couple of communications—from the uberfan who wrote the motivation-ascribing response to the Worst Comics poll that I dissected on Friday. He seemed to feel that it wasn’t fair that this was posted with his name attached to it—that it embarrassed him publicly in a way he hadn’t intended.

From my point of view, I’m not sure that I agree. While he couldn’t have known what I might say in response to what he wrote, he wrote it based on my call for comments about the issues we were discussing on the blog, and so to me had to be aware that there was a chance that some or all of what he wrote might be quoted.

That having been said, as I mentioned in my response, I wasn’t looking to hurt him specifically. This was in illustration of larger issues about how fans perceive and react to the creators making the comics and what they do.

And so I’ve gone back into last week’s posts and removed the name of our uberfan from them. But let this be a warning: this is the last time I’m going to do something like this. If you send me a response to a blog entry, it will be considered fair game for the blog.

More later.

Oh yeah!!! Brevoort's bad! Could turn out to be an interesting week on the blog.

uberfan's comments
I think ascribing any motives other than trying to tell a decent story while also trying to beat a monthly deadline so that you can earn the money to pay bills a bit far fetched.

The idea of Red Hulk beating Thor somehow being a swipe at JMS is pretty silly. If JMS wants to he can turn around and write a Thor beats Hulk story in a few months. Unless he felt it was a good story, he probably wouldn't.

Everyone has their own idea about what makes a bad story but I've found it's easier to avoid writers I've found don't match what I want in a comic than to get all that upset over it.

Even if I happen to encounter the worst comic ever produced this Wednesday, I will also encounter 10 or 20 others that entertained me and brought a smile to my face.

He was embarrassed in a public forum?

How does he think Bendis would feel about checking up on Breevort's blog and seeing not valid criticisms of his writings, but someone saying he has "gender issues"?

My guess is he'd just shrug it off even if he was a bit hurt. He puts himself into the public forum when his name is printed on so many comics and uberfan puts his name out there when he piuts his name to what I'm sure ws a well-thought-out comment.

apologizes
getting a little too much upset my self.
I'm not including all the writers in what I said, there's actually a few I barely appreciate the work.

Wow, I take back what I said about his having his real name on it. Oops.

Putting aside the perceived nature of comic fandom and/or the internet, are there ever moments where your read an angry letter or message and think that the person has a point worth exploring? How many changes, if any, have come about because of fan outcry?
Just curious.

Hmm..
I don't suppose you saw my comments for that after-the-poll entry Brevoort?

Anyways.. What's cooking for next week? (Your blogs are always interesting!)

Posted by Aziroth on 2008-09-08 16:43:29
Cancel that...
Make that, what's cooking for the next entry? Will there be a Best comic ever blog?

oh tom, tom, tom....
Your a grumpy old sod but I do like you. Every time I pass by this blog you're engaging in some sort of debate with fans, the kind of back-and-forth that would have been impossible just a few years ago. I don't always agree with what you say, and I don't always think the way you view certain story-arcs or occurences in the MU is necessarily spot-on, but what comes through whenever I stop buy here is the passion you feel for the medium and the honesty with which you approach your work and this blog. Passion, honesty and sticking up for your talent - whatever people may make of your opinions, thats to be admired I think. Like I say, you're a grumpy old sod Tom and that picture of you in the blonde wig still haunts my every waking hour (find a happy place...find a hppy place) - but you're a good egg old chap. It must get hard to fill this blog every week, but for my sake - be a dear and keep on keeping would you? Jolly good good then....

Simulation
T, it's been over a year (I think) since the last simulation. Do another one, please...

Disclosure
1) If that dude got upset, then he needs to sac up. He's wrong to attack someone personally and not take reciprocal criticism for his own character.

2) Unless there is a real legal issue, names should not be revealed. Unless there is a tort or crime, there is no need to expose the identity of posters. Especially in a world here where there is never 100% concrete evidence that that person actual typed those words. I'm not alleging misrepresentation of "Uberfan" but there just isn't any need for it.

3)Its easy to just call somebody out using their handle. There are plenty of dopes in here. They attack using extreme adjectives, labeling things with hyperbole. Why take that seriously.

4) Where's world wide web-head or cup o'joe. There's very little forum at the front and center of Marvel.com to truly gripe. I try and connect the topic to the best of my ability with the issues I want to address. ...and message boards are lame).

5) Is right out.

Make mine marvel.

When audience members communicate with professionals in the entertainment industry, or simply speak about them in public or on a public forum, it is very easy to forget that they are real people, even if their names are "famous" in their chosen field. Everyone has feelings. I pity celebrities who are sufficiently high-profile to get manhandled in the gossip press.

That said, I feel badly for that poster, because it's something almost everyone does. I've certainly been guilty of it. I remember an obnoxious letter I wrote to Uncanny X-Men when I was a kid, complaining about Storm's new mohawk (which I do still think looked pretty stupid), and I cringe remembering it because I know I came off as a jerk.

Internet anonymity gives a whole new dimension to this. Here on the Marvel message boards, many of us do have our real names posted on our profiles (Mine is Jim Cleaveland. Hi there!), but we take it as a given that most readers aren't going to bother to check. Presumably, the poster had his name listed that way, and that's how Tom got it. Personally, I don't care about being anonymous in this community (the only reason my handle isn't my real name is as a subtle plug for my webcomic), since it's essentially a giant comic book letters page, and letters pages always used people's real names. But I can understand those who do take that baseline amount of anonymity for granted.

Oh well. I hope everything stays peaceful now for a bit.

I'm not going to feel sorry for the person just because he posted his name. I agree with Tom, if you put your name in (my name's Dallas Reinhart by the way, not that it matters) the person's free to use it.

And if you use your real name, type like you're speaking to the person in real life. That'll prevent foot-in-mouth disease.

Personally, I think that's hilarious. You can't swing a dead cat in the comics blogosphere without running into uber-fan using his real name in the comments section, and he gets on your case for using it here?

hehe
remember no matter how bad the comic, past or present, there is some illiterate kid in some 3rd world country that would love to have it.....hahaha...

Worst of the worst
Not a single issue, but the worst comic run ever created was One More Day followed by Brand New Day. It ruined an American icon and caused a 50% drop in sales. Our "hero" traded his marriage to the devil.

It doesn't get much worse than that.
