My Friend Stan
2008-11-21 17:43:37

A crazy thing happened to me the other day.

I was checking in at my Facebook page (Yes, I have a Facebook page. Shut up.), making my way through the friend requests that had stacked up since the last time I was over there. And I came to one and stopped short.

Stan Lee.

Stan Lee wanted to be my friend.

This wasn’t me reaching out to Stan, or to POW! Entertainment. This was The Man, coming to my virtual doorstep, extending his hand in friendship.

There is still something strange and wonderful about the fact that Stan Lee knows who I am. I remember how much it startled me the first time I bumped into him at a convention panel and he immediately greeted my by name, though we hadn’t seen one another in months, and even then hadn’t spent a lot of time in each others’ presence.

This is not the real world. In the real world, Stan Lee should not know who I am.

Anyway, this all gives me an excuse to mention a little tome Jim McLaughlin and the good people at the Hero Initiative have just released. It’s a collection of all of Stan’s Soapbox columns from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, back in the days when Stan WAS Marvel Comics, and when he set the standard for interacting with the audience and raising the bar on what a comic book could be. It’s also chock-a-block full of background information on the era, so a reader can better understand the context of what Stan is talking about (outside of promoting Marvel titles, something we can all understand.) It also contains a bevy of guest essays from prominent members of the creative community, talking about their favorite Soapboxes and how Stan’s musings impacted on them. It’s a really nice compendium, and the best part is that the proceeds help to fund the Hero Initiative’s ongoing mission to help comic creators who’ve fallen on hard times. It’s well worth a look.

Do you think Stan would like to play a game of Word Twist?

More later.

That is pretty cool Tom. I'm liking the personal and anecdotal aspects of the blog this week.

Oh, and cue a raft of friend requests on Facebook! (mine included!)

Well, as long as you know each other. I feel weird about making friend requests to people who I only know through their work. Facebook's such a personal site, it feels intrusive to share so much with a stranger - and I feel it both ways. Anyhow, that's why you shouldn't expect a friend request from me, Tom. It's not because I don't like you ;)

I've been your friend on facebook for like a year, and I don't get a post in honor of how cool it is that I know you? Shocking.

Good story. I'll have to take a look at that book.

Dreaming of a better life
I wish we could get more Stan! Marvel should have him write one title, nothing unlike an Ultimate Title, and rotate legendary artists from month to month on the series.

Sure, they may be in their Golden Years and their productivity may not come close to where it once was say...40 years ago, but they still have something to offer. Then maybe one day we'd actually get to see a brand new Lee/Ditko Spider-Man story just one more time before the great Kirby Gods in the sky take their pencils away from them.

We all know Stan isn't short on words, maybe he'd write a years worth of books in one month!

Who would we bring back to create these new stories with him? Romita, Ditko, Milgrom, Steranko, Starlin...whoever made their mark with Marvel. Then maybe, just maybe, Marvel could give back to these creators a higher rate (ala the Icon imprint). Give them the money. They deserve it!

So Tom, DO you accept Friend Requests from fans? Or is this more a of a personal thing? I'm just wondering if this is a way for you to reach out to fans who otherwise wouldn't get to hear all the things you have to say about Marvel and comics in general that don't visit Marvel.com kinda like Joe Q does though Myspace or any of the other interviews you guys do through other sites.

me too...
...I...um...want to be your friend...

I suppose the real question is...
...do you remove "friends" who invite you to anti-"One More Day" Facebook groups ;)

Yea I know the feeling can be wierd
I went to a convention this year and I ran into Francis Manupul who is working at DC right now and I introduced myself and he was like "Oh yea the design guy Tony" and it blew my hair back apparently he knew me from a friend we both share who at the time I was going to college with and put in a few good words for me with Francis so that was really sureal.

Forget Tom (er, no offense, Tom), I want to friend Stan! Of course, I agree with Fetsur that it seems intrusive since I don't really know either of you. You're going to have to do more than stand on my coat at the first New York Comic-Con while I glare at the back of your head not knowing who you are...

I crossed paths with Stan at San Diego Con last year.

He was doing an interview for POW, I was blown away by seeing him in person.

But, I didn't want to interrupt it with my fan boy yelling "the Mimic is the greatest!"

steranko back at marvel...
Steranko said both Marvel and DC refused his recent offers ! :(
