It's New Comics Wednesday, and that means it's time for this week's Brevoort office pick of the week.

Today's Hot Pick is BEYOND #2. Written by Dwayne McDuffie (best known these days as one of the writers behind the Justice League Unlimited cartoon) and penciled by Scott Kolins (AVENGERS: EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES, THOR BLOOD OATH, etc.), BEYOND is the cure if you're looking for old-school heroics and are tired of crossovers. Eight disparate characters from all across the Marvel Universe find themselves spirited away to a planet at the edge of the cosmos, there to take part in a grand-scale life-and-death game. But removed from human society, the line between hero and villain begins to blur, as survival in a hostile land becomes the primary concern of everyone involved.

It's not as earth-shattering as CIVIL WAR, it's not as cosmic as ANNIHILATION, but BEYOND is nevertheless a barrelof classique Marvel fun. And it all takes place in a single comic.

More later.

I Would, But...
I'd totally get this comic, honest, it looks really nasty and I've heard great things about it, but I'm astonishingly poor. I can barely scrape out the nine bucks for each month's Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men, and Civil War! But if this is going on after Civil War ends, I'm on board.

Beyond ROCKS!
I have enjoyed the first two issues immensely! This is a perfect follow up to the original Secret Wars. It never occured to me to ask if there had been more than one Beyonder. Well done!

Beyond...
Look guys, if you want me to read this comic make it important. Make it have and effect to the regular universe or something. I like the whole story and all but hell no will I buy it if it won't be heard about in comics in 5 years. I want books to be in the memory of characters. Not this crazy stuff, okay? Just setting some things straight.

But....
Bearpod91... what about reading a story for the sake of reading a story? If its good, then why not just enjoy it on its own terms? That being said, I'm like Beyond okay. Not thrilling me yet, but I'm entertained enough to stick it out.

Well,
This may be mildly off topic, but still. Last night I was bored, sitting in bed reading my SECRET WAR hardcover. The newish one. And you know that part where Lucia Von Bardas is going all nuts ready to blow up all the tech-criminals? Well she says, "THIS IS A BOMB, NICK FURY! AND YOU PULLED THE TRIGGER!" Bombs don't have triggers. It would have been wiser to say "THIS IS A BOMB, NICk FURY! AND YOU LIT THE FUSE!" I'm just saying.

Bear, Envoy, Tom
Bear- I agree with jonwes. If it is a good story, enjoy it on those terms! The only people who "make it important" is YOU! If YOU like it, it was important. If you are into "real events," subscribe to a WWII history magazine. They have great stories, too.
Envoy- Maybe Lucia was so stinking crazy that she mixed her metaphors. It could have been worse, "THIS IS A BOMB, NICK FURY, AND YOU WENT THE WHOLE NINE YARDS!" Or "THIS IS A BOMB, NICK FURY, AND YOU PRIMED THE PUMP!" Sometimes these things happen.
TOM- Slow week for releases when Beyond 2 is up for pick of the litter? Here's a thought, do a pick of the month in addition. It would be great to hear what is the best in a month coming from someone who sees them all.

Beyond Me..
at first i didn't get beyond. I saw the first one, and i liked the cover but didn't buy it. then today i saw the second and then bought both issues. I probably shouldn't have though cuz now i have added another title to my extremely long list. Oh well it was enjoyable, no where near annhilation #1 but thumbs up.

Glad to see Beyond getting some publicity. I've really enjoyed the first two issues so far -- classic Marvel fun (and no Wolverine!). I hope it's not all getting lost in Marvel's bigger events and, if it is, that's not seen as a reflection on the writer, stories or characters.

What!!!!!!!!!
What's wrong with Wolverine. I know like every issue has Wolverine but he's cool. He's one of the reasons some people buy that comic.
