Seeing is Believing

Somebody asked me why I didn't include a photograph of Warren Simons in yesterday's blog entry. This is because Warren Simons is a man of mystery, an enigma wrapped in a riddle. We're not even sure his name really is Warren Simons, to be frank, so we've started referring to him as Lamont, after the Shadow.

Warren Simons, I am told, does not photograph.

With a little luck, I'll get back to writing something interesting here next week, but for now, let me leave you with both an assortment of upcoming preview artwork (because that's always easy to get away with), and a very special photograph. (And no, it's not of Warren Simons.)

This is a still image from a 1962 episode of NAKED CITY, an early '60s urban crime drama which ran on ABC. But what's interesting about this particular still is the newsstand in the background of the shot. There, hanging from bulldog clips, you can easily make out copies of AMAZING FANTASY #15, the first appearance of Spider-Man, and JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #83, the first appearance of Thor. Now, the thing you've got to realize is that, when this episode was shot, nobody would have had any idea that these would prove to be two of the most important comics published during the Silver Age. No, they represented whatever happened to be on-sale when the set dresser decorated the newsstand for this particular shot.

There's a similarly amazing photograph over at the DIAL B FOR BLOG website in the second installment on the life and career of Ira Schnapp. The photo in question depicts a newsstand in 1938, at which you can clearly see copies of ACTION COMICS #1 on sale. Amazing. You can see it here:

Have a good weekend.

Wow is that Night Raven there to the left of Cap? Great to see Marvel using that classic character by Parkhouse/Lloyd/Bolton. Haven't seen him since that graphic novel collection in the early 90s.

Thunderbolts
I read on Newsarama of the possibillity of Marren Ellis taking over Thunderbolts, and a team roster change. Never been a fan of any Warren Ellis work, so this is good news for me. Good news I hear you say? Well, I've been looking for a free slot to start collecting a new title when I cancel Thunderbolts.
