Top 5

All right, as promised yesterday, here are my picks for the five best books Marvel is publishing right now. Please keep in mind that I'm focusing solely on regular ongoing titles here, and not taking limited series or specials into account. And this list is subject to change on a week-to-week basis. So, in no particular order:

ASTONISHING X-MEN - Accomplishes the singular goal of making the X-Men all feel like the characters I first encountered back in 1978, without jettisoning any of the backstory that's come since. Elegantly stripped down to the basics, with witty dialogue, great structure and immaculate art.

DAREDEVIL - I was a big fan of the Bendis/Maleev run on this book, especially their first twenty issues or so. And yet, Ed Brubaker and michael Lark have stepped on board without missing a beat, and have even ratched things up a notch. This remains the book with the best "anything can happen" feel, and Bru's plotting skills are so strong that, even when something crazy or unexpected does happen, you're confident that it's all going to make perfect sense in the end.

CAPTAIN AMERICA - Not going to say too much about this one, since I edit it, but Ed and Steve Epting's CAP combines the soap opera aspects of a vintage Marvel comic with a modern-day techno-thriller sheen.

SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE - Criminally underrated by folks who can't broaden their minds to get past the fact that this exists outside of the regular continuity, and that it's not a super hero book per se, but a soap opera book that happens to have a super hero in it. Nevertheless, Sean McKeever writes the best interpersonal drama of this kind in comics, and here he's perfectly paired with Takeshi Miyazawa whose background in japanese comics gives him ample chops to convey the subtle emotional nuances of the story.

NEXTWAVE - Kind of a cheat on my part, given that it's wrapping up as an ongoing title, but NEXTWAVE remains a loud, over-the-top original take on a Marvel super hero team book, totally unafraid to go for bizarre ludicrousness or to sucker punch you with unexpected moments of personal loss or tragedy. It's not a meaty read, but it is exciting in a way that few other books are at the moment. In some ways, I think it may age better by wrapping up as an ongoing now, rather than outstaying its welcome and letting the style get old, as has happened with other titles over the years.

More later.

Que?
I never saw SMLMJ or NextWAVE making this list! To be honest, I kinda hate Nextwave because it seems that Ellis hates the characters (and the readers a little). I never read SMLMJ, and I probably won't. Interesting picks! I agree that Astonishing does a great job of writing x-characters. (Still, I think the bantering is a bit too much like Buffy, though.)

not what i expected tom! here's mine
i didn't see those choices coming. if i were to nominate mine's here what i would choose (in no particular order as well):

NEW AVENGERS - The loud moments FEEL loud and the quiet moments FEEL quiet. When Jessica was sitting down talking to Cap about being a double (wait triple? i forget) agent, the pacing and storytelling made a quiet moment feel exciting yet very passive / pensive. When the team fought the Wrecker or the Collective, despite the varying size between the two battles, they each felt loud and violent. The story pacing screamed and I heard it.

BLACK PANTHER - Hudlin just keeps getting better. There's something special about a comic that starts out good and becomes great. It makes you feel, as a reader, like your faith in the material somehow magically made the series better. Hudlin is writing a smart, funny, action packed book that is a proud purchase everytime.

UNCANNY X-MEN: The end of Claremont's recent run (think Grey's End and later) matured very well. Then it shifted to Bru and became a whole other sort of tale - yet still maintained a high level of enjoyment. Before I loved how Claremont was pushing the team into the future. Now I love how suspenseful the title feels. Nice character mix as well.

WOLVERINE - Never cared much for his solo title, but Way changed that. Good, fast read. Then Civil War came along and the creative team changed. I was surprised by how excellent the book carried the change. It's a fun read, more situational that some other of my favorites, but it reads well both quickly and taking your time.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: Some of my other fav books have seen creative shifts in the past year and have lost their touch. This is the opposite - I started with JMS when he began, left, and then came back with the Road To Civil War. Seriously, how good was the last issue??? "I think I would have liked your uncle, Reed... But you - you loved him." AND the now classic: "Thought you said you were going out..." "And I thought you knew which side you were on."

Good Picks
I agree that most of the books on the list are pretty amazing. The first four are awesome, and Nextwave I'm not a big fan of, but I understand why some people would like it. I just personally don't like much of Ellis's writing. I know lots of people like him... I'm guessing it's his mad plots. I'm just more about character.

I agree on Astonishing, Daredevil and Nextwave. Rounding out my Top 5 current Marvel ongoings:

RUNAWAYS: I love this book. I love all of the characters, I love Adrian's highly energetic artwork with all the amazing background details. I love the cliffhangers, misdirections and surprise twists. I love the dialogue.
I've been a Joss Whedon fan since Buffy (the original movie. While too campy for my taste, it showed a lot of potential that Joss used on the show) and I've followed Michael Ryan's art ever since his criminally underrated Cable run. I'd say that they are perfect for every book they work on, but on Runaways, they really have a hard time following Brian and Adrian.

BOOK OF LOST SOULS: Do Icon books count? Book of Lost Souls is Straczynski's best comic work today, edging out Amazing Spider-Man and even beating Midnight Nation. Book of Lost Souls combines gothic fantasy with quiet moments, complete with beautiful artwork. I just wish the waiting for #7 would be over.

Spider Man Loves MJ!!!
Is my favorite Marvel book right now! But of course that makes sense (I am in the target audience of 32 year old men).

Probably my second favorite is Daredevil but that might be unfair since I just read Brubaker and Lark's first trade and it was unbelievably good. So its fresh on my mind.

top 5 one last word
it's about the rumour about new Alpha Flight called Omega Flight, glad to see Beta Ray Bill (couldn't stay the same- too alien ? ) back, and US Agent too, and Arachne but couldn't have been a new FORCE WORKS - who will be great- and let Guardian and Vindicator out of it ? there's already some much to do with Alpha Flight background and so much who hadn't be done.

Thanks for the audience

I'd personally bump Cap and Nextwave in favour of Runaways and She-Hulk... mainly because I don't read Cap, and I just can't get my head around Nextwave (pretty pictures, though). And those two books outrank everything on the list in my opinion anyway, so.

The only one of those books I'm reading is Cap. I've tried Astonishing and Nextwave, and SMLMJ isn't my thing, though I might get around to picking up Brubaker's DD in trade.

My Top 5 (in no particular order):

Amazing Spider-Girl
X-Factor
Runaways
Cable/Deadpool
Sensational Spider-Man

Just in terms of those I most look forward to reading month after month.
