Lunch, Marvel-style
2006-12-13 08:51:25

Lunchtime at the Marvel offices can be an adventure all its own. On a typical day, a group of Marvel staffers will head out together to get a meal somewhere around 1:00 in the afternoon. These little impromptu get-togethers are very much like those among the staff in any other business, but they also have a flavor all their own.

The make-up of the lunch crew will tend to determine the overall vibe of the meal--and even on those occasions where we're heading out specifically to talk about some point of business, we very rarely stay in a work-mindset for the entirety of any lunch. If Joe Q is along, there's likely to be at least a little bit of sports chatter, or maybe a bit of business he heard on the Howard Stern show the last couple of days. Ralph Macchio is known for bringing up issues of one sort or another on the political front, both national and local. Ralph also has the largest stockpile of stories about the bygone days of Marvel, having worked here so long. The gregarious C.B. Cebulski is almost guaranteed to contribute some tale of his latest misadventure at some point during the lunch, typically but not always involving the consumption of alcohol. Axel Alonso can be depended upon to make at least one off-coor comment, usually in a self-deprecating way. And David Bogart is either in an ultra-hyper mode, or an ultra-polite one, depending on his stress level throughout the day.

There's often a lot of industry gossip shared (some of it even true!), discussions about people in and around the office, a fair amount of bashing of the competition, and a little bit of off-the-cuff brainstorming. Some of our best and most commercial ideas have come from something somebody's said off-handedly at lunch.

And, more often than we'd like, some editors wind up having to spend their lunch period hastily wolfing down some quickie sandwich at their desk, while trying to get caught up on the mountain of work that's been piling up.

More later.
