The New Cool
2007-08-22 09:52:05

It's not hot, breaking news anymore at this point, but that doesn't make it any less cool. As we announced at Wizard World Chicago this past month, Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch will be starting a year-long (at least) run on FANTASTIC FOUR starting with issue #554 at the beginning of 2008.

I know this is news that's been greeted with quite a bit of skepticism—justified skepticism, perhaps. And while I can't necessarily put every fear you may have to rest, I can tell you that Mark and Bryan have been working on the book for several months now. Mark's already turned in nine scripts (some of them only in first draft form, and needing at least one minor revision—but written nonetheless.) And I've got in hand three full finished issues of pencils from Bryan, and he's already a good portion of the way into the fourth—not to mention the first nine cover images. So at least at the outset, any delay of service should be minimal.

By way of proof, if you cast your eyes leftwards, you'll find not only the pencils to the team's first cover (which will carry a new and distinctive trade dress to help it stand out from the rest of the Marvel line), but also a page from their fourth issue, #557.

In 2008, FANTASTIC FOUR becomes Marvel's flagship title once again. Bet on it.

More later.

Looks good
Over the years, Spider-Man has guest stared in the first issue (or close to it) of many series. Just as a way to bump up interest. The Fantastic Four was the group that guest starred in *Spider-Man's* first issue.

So it struck me as a little sad when Richard Roper of Ebert and Roper said he'd always thought of the FF as second tier heroes. If this does bring the team back up to flagship status, awesome.

Four Horsemen Sign
Looks like Reed is a member of legendary wrestling stable The Four Horsemen. Wonder if WWE would complain about it if they ever see Reed flashing the Four Horsemen sign in the cover...

Thank You
As Fantastic Four is the only comic I reliably follow, I appreciate a team change. Thank you. The current one is just not doing it for me. There's something terribly...muted...about the last few issues.

So, here's to change!

I'm looking forward to this series but new trade dress to make it stand out from the rest of the Marvel line - Why??

Make Me a Believer
I've been buying FF lately, but it's definitely not my favorite Marvel title, by far. Sometimes I think it's downright boring.

But I have faith. Faith that there won't be huge delays, and faith that Millar will yet again pull some ridiculous and incredible stuff out of his hat.

FF was dangerously close to getting the axe on my pull list. Now it looks like I'll have to wait a bit longer. You guys are always pulling a fast one on me.

Good, better, best...
I am loving the FF-issues and find them far from boring. The change of team with the introduction of the Black Panther and Storm was a very refreshing and cool outline and I seriously loved the way Black Panther handled the Ego/Galactus threat ...

So ... change was not necessary for me .... But still ... I have no doubt that it will continue to be a strong title. For me, the FF is already a flagship.

then again: the Avengers is cool as well, the Punisher WJ also ... Spider-Man also ... etc etc. They're all flagships. I just like Marvel I guess. hehehe.

challengers of the future
we'll have the time to enjoy a little more T'Challa and Ororo, and for what I had read in the Newsrama interview, the book will take an interesting sci-fi/horrror touch, couldn't ask better...

reed isn't dead!
i asked this at the civil war and remembrance panel in wizard world chicago, "Since reed richards is in this series, post WWH, alive, and two other ff members unregistered, how will the ff survive ppost civil war?" now, forgetting all that other stuff, focus on the part about reed richards not being dead. Joe Q told me, " don't be so sure about him not being dead after WWH." I didn't see how this made sense, but maybe, if h was goiving me a sign, the ff will be in an alternate universe where reed doesn't die...? Also, I'd like to issue an apology. When I askd that question at Wizard world, for some reason, I think I stressed a word or two and sounded like a jerk to Joe Q and Mark Millar. My speech pattern sounded little snobby to me and I'd like to confirm that I was just nervous (im fourteen) and I hope I havent offended anybody. Joe q and Mark Millar have brought soome of marvel's best to the wrld, and I would never mean to sound rude. If you read this, and if I'm not wroing about ho I sounded, I'm sorry. anyway, I hope this turns out to be agreat run. Thanx

>In 2008, FANTASTIC FOUR becomes Marvel's flagship title once >again. Bet on it.

Does this mean we can get the classic Avengers back again?
(Alternatively, does this mean Spider-Man and Wolverine are joining the FF. So many different snarks to choose from.)

I imagine I'll be dropping the title when McDuffie leaves. Never been a huge FF fan and I'm mostly getting it right now for Gravity.

Posted by motteditor on 2007-08-22 18:00:38
yeah
Mott, you did set your phasers to snark didn't you? That's okay.

I said it on another board, but I fell in love with the FF by reading the essentials, not by reading the current line. I think that the FF has something unique and incredible to offer that no other title can provide, and I am just waiting for someone to find the right voice for it. I did NOT like Millar's take on Richards during Civil War (or even in the Wolverine Enemy of the State issue), so I am hoping that there is a different voice given to him here. (Maybe Skrull?)
Having said that, I really am looking forward to giving this a shot.

If anything can turn me into an FF reader - it's this!

Posted by NewChad on 2007-08-23 05:13:00
I really liked McDuffie's writing, and his crazy "Galactus vs. Gravity, BP vs. Silver Surfer" stuff, and I'm going to miss it.
If this is as good as Ultimates, it'll be brilliant. That said, I'd like to see the next issue of FF some time *before* Fantastic 4 *IV*. (A cheap shot, I know, but, honestly, how late did Ultimates 2 end up being? At least Ult. Wolverine and Hulk just *died*.) Could you use McDuffie and Pelletier as fill-in. One week, dark and moody left-wing politics, the next "Giant Space Toads that talk with Smell!" Something for everyone.

yeah...
do what you want but seriously

"In 2008, FANTASTIC FOUR becomes Marvel's flagship title once again. Bet on it."

Hahaha...aww...*sigh*..good one, Tom.

Who said Marvel doesn't have a good sense of humor?

Does the Human Torch have a moustache in that first cover pic? lol

Looks good! way to go!

FF Pride
I've been flashing the four sign for years while wearing my FF shirt, although the way I flash it is with the ring finger down and the other four fingers up. You have to include the thumb, that's the Thing.

I love seeing the FF get the attention they deserve. I have no doubt that if this book comes in consistently on time that it will be a huge hit.

Fantastic Three
I want the originals back together. I want the series to return to status quo. But this new team is somewhat reviving the series (but still not capable of bringing it to flagship status).

I would like to see Fantastic 3 (Reed, Sue, and their son) making a debut. Maybe that will be a breath of fresh air (specially nowadays since comics are becoming darker and darker).

Speaking of Reed's son, when will Marvel print a comic book about this powerful mutant? A comic book about a young boy is not bad material at all.
