I make it a general policy not to buy or collect original art—not because it isn't beautiful or worthwhile, but because it can lead to conflicts of interest. On occasion, artists have given me pages as a gift, but even that I try to discourage, because I don't want anybody feeling like they can get gigs from me or from Marvel through some "kickback" method involving art. The history of comics is littered with stuff like this.

Which is why I'm sharing this piece that Harvey Tolibao, who's penciling the IRON MAN: DIRECTOR OF SHIELD Annual, sent in to me along with his signed paperwork. It was a very nice gesture, and I'm not saying that I don't appreciate it—but at the same time, I like to act above board.

Below that are a few character sketches that Harvey did while warming up for the Annual, which is being written by Christos Gage. He definitely does his homework before embarking on a job. Harvey is best known at the moment for his work on the STAR WARS licensed comics over at Dark Horse, and this Annual will represent his first work for Marvel—but assuredly not his last.

And that'd be true whether he sent me a drawing or not.

More later.

He sure got himself some good free publicity on your blog, mind :)

I love the Iron Man armour - sleeker than the current version isn't it? Love it.

Great stuff
Really good mecha artist! His drawing of Madame Hydra reminds me a little bit of what we are seeing from Barry Kitson in the Order. Very cool!

I appreciate your attempts to prevent bribery, too. Best comics for the best artists.

bribery.
The man doesn't take bribery in the form of art or any art as he feels it may lead to that. Brevoort for ed in chief!

Harvey's stuff is amazing. Wait until you see it! Harvey, Mike Perkins, Brian Denham...I can't believe how good I have it in November!!

And come on, bribing an editor with art is just silly. Everyone knows you bribe editors with pie.

Damn! Gave away my secret!!

Very nice work here! I think its fair to say there is also a cultural component to this. Harvey was born in, and lives in, the Philippines. Breaking into international comics has been Harvey's dream from what I have read, and he is now working at the top. This is a clear indicator of his talent, and success. His sending you artwork is a sincere expression of gratitude, and this is how things are done in Asia, and the Philippines is certainly no exception. For that matter, kickbacks and bribery are commonplace in the Philippines as well, though that's not the case here.

Its good and honorable to keep things like this transparent, particularly in a position such as yours. I think its also worthwhile to acknowledge what is clearly sincere gratitude from someone with a very different cultural outlook, particularly so it will not be mistakenly interpreted as common brown-nosing by others. For what its worth.

I hope to see a LOT more of Harvey's work at Marvel. Please keep him busy, and keep it coming!
