J. Jonah's none too happy about this...

Hello, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Fans!

Assistant editor Daniel Ketchum here, eager to give you the scoop on Marvel's favorite web-slinger...

Our boy Peter Parker sure has been busy this month. Not only is Civil War upon us, but he's gone and done the unthinkable: he's revealed his secret identity for the world to see.

Now, the newly unmasked Spidey is coping with the reverberations of his decision. How do you think he's handling it?

To keep tabs on our favorite wall-crawler, take a look at Amazing Spider-Man, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Sensational Spider-Man, Civil War, Civil War: Front Line, New Avengers, and Fantastic Four. (Told you he's been a busy boy!)

And, of course, definitely swing by this blog for our reflections on Spidey, inside looks at upcoming Spider-Man comics, and sneak peeks of what's coming down the pike.

Until next time!
Poor Peter
I honestly feel really bad for Peter. It was obviously a very hard decision for him. One thing is also painfully obvious though, his life isn't going to get any easier any time soon. Thats why I feel so bad for him. I mean geez, just when his life was starting to calm a bit, and this happens. As for the whole unveiling aspect, I don't think I'm that shocked. It just seems like something that was going to happen eventually. I've been a Spidey fan for as long as I can remember and I have faith that he can face anything that comes his way, no matter how hard it is.

Beneath the mask...
Pete is still the same character created by LeeDitko, but naturally more mature, having outgrown most of his adolescent characteristics. If he was still the same "loveable loser" that he started out as (Charlie Brown gets bitten by a radioactive spider while in high school and becomes a superhero) I wouldn't still be reading his books. Some feedback: I definately see Spidey switching sides once the full ramifications of the Registration Act become clear. I hope this happens. I like the new techno-armor suit, but would like to see it more closely resemble his old costume (and not the Scarlet Spider's). What I would like to see is a mask (a la Captain America) with the lower half exposed, so we can have a more expressive Spider-Man. The new suit can make the lower part transparent, giving us a much more interesting Spidey, because you would then be able to show his changing emotions through the artwork, rather than describing them in the narrative or through the use of thought balloons. I've wished for this change in costume design for 33 years. Please support the Make a Wish Foundation and make my wish come true. And, finally, please lose the spikes. WolverSpidey is not a new book I want to see on the shelves in the coming months. It's way out of character. Spikes are for killing, unlike webs, which are defensive and necessary for Spidey's Tarzanesque brachiating.

PLEASE STOP
Spider-Man being really part of some insect scheme that reveals that he actually wasn't bitten by the radioactive spider by accident? Spidey dying and being reborn with talons and a new suit? Now Spider-Man revealing his secret identity?

Why don't you think of plain good stories that don't involve making a complete change and destroying stan & steve's creation every three months? Come on ...!

Story
For the moment i'm one of the few (from what it looks like on the internet!) that will withhold judgement on the unmasking. As long as there are some freakin' good stories that come from this i'm ok with it. If it ends up just fizzling out as a publicity stunt or the story telling becomes limited as a result, then i'll probably hop on the hater bandwagon that has been running rampant through cyberspace. For now i'm just looking forward to seeing where this goes!

Question for the Editor
How is the storyline progressing in the multiple titles? What I mean is this, are the different books to be taken somewhat simultaneously, or is there a time gap that we are following with CW and Amazing being the most current in the timeline with the other books lagging a few days/weeks/months? When do the effects of CW show up in Spectacular or the other books? (And New Avengers for that matter!)

I feel a resonance with some of the other responses. I question how you can stabilize Spiderman after having so many massive events in his life recently. Have we become addicted to drastically altering characters instead of telling really good stories? Having said that, I think the unmasking will be able to open doors for telling stories that have been shut for decades and I am more excited about that than I am about claws and totemic arachnid deities.

Couldn't be happier
I love the fact that Peter came to the decision of unmasking with support from his wife & aunt. He’s also a man of honor, and he made a promise to Tony, which he is keeping. The unmasking will bring a whole new aspect to the Spidey character and Stories. This is refreshing to say the least. I for one am pretty syked about all of this. I’m anxious to see the outcome and consequences of Civil War. If Spidey sticks to “the right side of the law”, will that mean another costume change (as someone else mentioned, with a revealed face); will Spidey become a government agent? Will the pay be a big benefit, finally allowing him to be Spider-Man full-time and supporting his family with no financial worries? The “reveal” could signify a huge cornerstone for the character, allowing the writers and artists to basically take Spider-Man to the next level. He is carte blanche. As of now, it will be very hard to predict what lies ahead for the wall-crawler.
Kudos guys, you’ve renewed my interest for webhead’s books (even though I’ve been collecting on/off since 1990).

A worderful idea
How amazing change in spidey’s life!. I can tell you, in my opinion, this could be something really good that came from the big “What if”, called House of M, (finally I found something good about House of M, hehe), because it made possible to see a Spidey unmasked and winner, and let Marvel to know how it would be take it from fans.

To me it’s a perfect move from the house of ideas, it open doors to a bunch of decades to come of new stories, leave Orborn, Venom (Scorpion-Gorgon) and all enemies that knew spider-man’s secret identity without that special resource; of course, now every enemy will know it, but Spider-Man is not the same anymore. BTW, this huge event (unmasked) it could not have happened without Spidey’s evolution and Tony’s new suit, it was something that it was really necessary, Spydey was way behind his enemies and actual Marvel Universe, he needed to become more powerful to be able to make it unmasked, as a new avenger and as Tony’s right arm in civil war.

I’m happy to be a witness of this, and eager to have on hand the new issues AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 533 and SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN # 28, hehe

Ps.s I’m with Spider-man!

p.s2 I’ve been a spidey’s fan since kindergarden, that makes 2 decades and a half

Spider-man all grown up!
I like how Spider-man is gowing.
But I would like to respond about Spider-man's suit, about the suggestions about making more like Captain America. I don't like that idea, and I would like you to think about his would you like this with Captain america. I would like Spidey's suit made so where his mask can open up easier and he can fight without it or swing around with it. I don't mind the suit changing colors or adding new things to it. I don't like the Spider-man from 2199, I like the newest Spider-man suit I would like him to go away from Tony and able to make his own Super suit. Maybe add some jet boots like he wants, that would be cool. But keep the general suit the same. We can change the material, the color and add new function to it but don't change what the suit looks like completly. I would not want to see Iron man change and I don't want to see Spiderman, maybe just go to a new color.
Also I think maybe after Civil War is over, that Spidey may have to creat a new hero and fight as him to possible take some of enemies attention to a different Hero, also let Spidey fight as Spidey but he can also have another Hero to pull the villians attention away from Spidey and MJ. Hey just a thought.
And I also agree leave MJ alone.

Stories
I don't know about the rest of you, but I read comics for the stories and love of the characters. I've been a Spidey nut for as long as I can remember, and I've grown up with Peter. I loved ASM #532. I had my doubts about him ending up on Stark's side of the Civil War. I simply couldn't wrap my head around the ide of revealing his identity after so many years of hiding, but Straczynski's Aunt May sold me, just like she sold him.

Beautifully told.

In fact, this was my favorite Spidey story since Spidey vs. Firelord, and that was a helluva long time ago.

Bad Move
I think unmasking himself is one of the biggest mistakes Peter can make. I'm sure he wouldn't have done it without some persuasion from Tony Stark becuase of his promise to be on his side. Personally, the wall-crawler should be on Captain America's side. For too long has Tony Stark and Secret Cabal of Heroes have played God. What hapeens when Ironman disagrees with the gov't? Its like cap said in Civili War 1. Its only a matter of time before the gov't decides who the badguys are and it looks they've already decided. I hope spidey survives but he just but his family in more danger than is necessary. Thats a major reason for maintaining the secret id. Bad Move Spidey

is everyone insane?
i cant believe how many people hate that spidey revealed his identity. its such a awesome idea for the spiderman comics. i mean, come on, SPIDERMAN unmasked? thats awesome! shocking, but awesome. for everyone out there that think that this is a good idea, thank you for having some sense!

Oh Dear...
Geeze, how is Peter going to get out of this one? Last time I checked he was one of the few who even had a secret identity to hide, and now it's gone? I don't know how poor Pete is going to get through this one. Wait a second, he IS going to get through, right? Marvel isn't going to kill him off, right? That would be crazy! Almost as crazy as unmasking Spider-Man over live TV...

Posted by number3 on 2006-06-20 23:25:42
No going back.
Y'know, some people say this is a good idea, others say it's terrible. Theres pros and cons to every side. Years ago the story was about a nerd who gets super powers but he himself doesn't get all that much cooler. This was in the 60's, so everybody could relate. That was years ago, and now something must change so everyone could relate to him again. Wait! They came out with ultimate Spider-man for that. Ok..so the story is now everybody knows who he is, he must battle for his life, generate more fans for Marvel and then...what? I guess he gets a job and makes money being a super-hero, thus removing his 'Everyday Joe' aura that surrounds him. Maybe Mary Jane gets killed and he gets back with Felicia Hardy, cause that chick is smokin.

HE SOLD OUT
I HAVE BEEN A SPIDEY FAN FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE, I LOVE HIM, BUT WHAT HE JUST DID IS OUTRAGEOUS.
REVEALING HIS ID TO EVERYONE WAS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF HIS LIFE, AND IN DOING SO HE CHANGED MY VISION OF HIM, I USED TO THINK OF HIM AS A GREAT CHARACTER AND A GREAT HERO, NOW I THINK HE IS A COWARD WHO TOOK THE EASY WAY OUT.
IS HE GONNA BETRAY HIS REAL FRIENDS AND HUNT THEM DOWN?
THE INDIVIDUALS SHOULD BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN A BUNCH OF PENCIL PUSHERS, WHO WILL TELL HIM WHO THE BAD GUYS ARE.
SHAME ON YOU PETER PARKER (I THINK WHAT YOU GUYS AT MARVEL DID WAS BRAVE, AND I ADMIRE IT, BUT IF THIS HAD HAPPENED IN REAL LIFE I WOULD THINK OF PETE AS NOTHING MORE THAN A MAN WHO SOLD HIS SOUL, AND THERE IS NOTHING MORE HUMILATING THAN THAT).
AS A FAN I STAND WITH CAPTAIN AMERICA, WHO REFUSED TO BE A PAWN FOR THE GOBERMENT AND DECIDED TO FIGHT FOR WHAT HE BELIEVED.
CAP HAD THE GUTS TO SAY: THIS IS WRONG.
ON THE OTHER HAND PETER THOUGHT ABOUT RUNNING AWAY, AND IN THE END DECIDED TO PLAY FOR THE DEVIL`S TEAM.
SURE HE KEPT HIS PROMISE TO TONY STARK, BUT HE PLEDGED HIS LOYALTY TO HIM WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT HE WOULD BE ASKED FOR.
AS A PERSON IF YOU ASK ME WHO WOULD I CHOOSE, MY COUNTRY OR MY REAL FRIENDS, WITHOUT A DOUBT I WOULD CHOOSE MY FRIENDS, JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN THERE FOR ME, THE GOBERMENT, THEY ARE A BUNCH OF SOULESS MEN WHO GIVE A DAMM ABOUT EVERYONE OF US, ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS MONEY.
PETER PARKER YOU WILL REGRET THIS FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, FOR NOW ON YOU SHULD BE KNOWN AS THE AMAZING PAWN-MAN, OR THE SPECTACULAR SOLD-OUT.
SHAME ON YOU PETER PARKER.

True believers...
I don't understand what is so wrong with spider-man unmasking. And in no way, was that choice an "easy way out", or a "cowardly act". With what he has on the line, for him to reveal his identity was an act of responsibility.
The superhero community was basically founded on the very fact that this is their country, and they protect the people in it, and people all across the world. They spent their lives, risking their secret identies everytime they put on a costume. Now they have a chance to work WITH the government, to be recognized in a time of crisis as "the hero's of our nation", just by simply revealing their identities to the authorities.
For years, superhero's came and they went. Often facing ridicule from the very people they protect. Now they can relax, really spend their lives, dedicating themselves to the cause in which they first put their spandex on in the beginning. To protect the innocent, serve justice when needed. Now to be given the authority to also legally detain, charge, and read out the criminal's rights.

If anything i think Captain America should fight for a tougher system. Not fight against the very system that made him who he is now. He should be a role model to the children, and people of this country.

Hiding behind a mask, at a time when the people you protect are asking for a sign of trust, is a cowardly act. When chaos is unleashed, order must be restored.

Either way, registration act or not, i know spider-man will make sense of everything. As of now, i am totally down for a society where the people see heroes, as people as well. Maybe its time for the super heroes to show to the world, all they have been through for all these years. Teach the people of the difficulties one must go through, with great power. And the responsibility thereafter.

100% correct
m3shuggah is 100% right. I don't even feel like there needs to be anything else said. But it is amazing how the Civil War is splitting up hero's it also splitting up fans. And what a way to bring fans into reading more comics.

Sorry, but Marvel Missed Again
I'm sorry to say this, but I think Marvel has finally ruined this character, the greatest comics character in the history of this genre. Spidey's decision to unmask isn't about just his life, it's about a man of character choosing to sell out because he's recieved a lot of material things from an individual with the moral compass of a jellyfish. Some of the other commentors said, in paraphrase, that Spidey's growing up. All too often 'growing up' is just another way of saying 'selling out'. Spidey sacrificed the liberties of his fellow heroes because of a cushy job, cushy apartment, cushy security, and a cushy new costume. He's basically Iron Man's side kick and that's not what those of us who've read Spidey from way back want to see. Mark Millar has proved that he thinks the comic convention of Secret Identity is obsolete, that he's too hip for the old school comic ways. Just read the first story arch from Marvel Knights Spider Man to see how adolescent he sees it. Here's a tip Mr. Millar. There's more to telling a good story than shocking people. THere's a character to be true to and a theme to play off of. Spidey never was, nor should he be, the hero with the cosmic or political concerns. He's your friendly neighborhood Spider Man. He's not an Avenger and rubbing elbows with Stark and SHIELD has obviously changed him for the worse. It's not okay for him to side with Iron Man just because he knows he'll be protected. That's not responsibility, that's not thinking of others first. That's a selfish act of a confused man, who will hopefully see the errors of his ways. But you'll pardon me if my faith in Millar and the rest of Marvel has taken something of a turn. I kept my head up through the damned Clone Saga and 50 bagillion Magneto or Jean Grey Resurrections. I took a certain amount of comfort and faith in truly good stories like Evolve or Die, the Evil That Men Do, or the Ezekial story arch. But you put Spidey in the wrong hands, a man who seems to be thinking about comicdom more than Spideydom, to be simplistic about it. Spidey's about one man's perspective in a larger world, and this decision betrays the essence of the character. Sorry, those of you who disagree, but this spells a bad turn for the Spidey-verse. A lot of Spidey's appeal came from the tension between Spidey's life and Peter's and I liked the way Evolve or Die was moving towards a melding of the two, but that melding should have been a personal thing, a movement in the soul of the man, not a public circus, a fiasco. Furthermore, his greatest appeal was his character, is ideals, ideals that included a person's rights. Maybe, I'm wrong, and Mark Millar has it planned that this will be the greatest mistake in Spidey's life. Maybe he'll turn double agent for Cap, maybe MJ or May or both will pay with their lives for his idiotic move, maybe SHIELD will ask him to do things and cross lines he's not willing to. . .but you'll excuse me if my faith is jarred. As a Lit major and a writer, stories are what I do and part of who I am, which doesn't make me more important than the average Spidey fan, but it's where my passion and disappoinment comes from. I've already had a major disappointment in the sphere of my favorite childhood stories recently, the stories that I was raised on, when the debacle Lucas called Episodes 1-3 came out, and now I'm facing the same basic thing with what was probably my second favorite story of all time. So I'll just pray something good comes out of this, stick with Civil War till its end and hope against hope that someone sees reason soon and I won't have to finally give up on this company. Who knows, maybe the geniuses at Marvel will pull one of their usual Marvel Mulligans and have Tony Stark's satellites hypnotize the world into forgetting Peter's identity. Nah. . .no one's that corny, right? Anyway, thanks for listening, and here's hoping for the best

Spidey revealed
I've been a Spdey fan since the Amazing Friends Cartoon series appeared in the UK. Pete has faced the hardest choice of his life, the question which is being constantly asked is what will this choice cost him. It's obvious that he has placed himself in increased danger by choosing to side with Tony after seeing the cover for Civil War #5. Just a few thoughts ; Is the guy holding the assault rifle Punisher and is he Spiderman's salvation or his doom? Time will tell.

The Future...or what's left of it.
From the very beginning of Civil War i had this feeling that Spidey was dead as i knew it. Come issue #2 and here it's true. His relatable qualities, like many have said, are gone. He's not that same individual who was created to make superheroes relevant to the real world, he's now a tool to boost sales and make thing easier at Marvel.
And the fisrt way i see marvel using their tool...killing MJ. I'm sure a lot of fans have heard that the biggest problem for spidey stories if MJ. She creates to large an obstacle for writers to understand. But if the pople at marvel still want spidey to be relatable to the readers he needs to stay with Mary Jane. Marriage and relationships in the Marvel universe are dying. Think of all the heroes who had loved ones and spouses, where are they now? Vision and Scarlet Witch..dead and insane, Hawkeye and Mockingbird...missing and dead, Cyclops and Jean Grey...cheating and dead; the olny lasting mirrage that involves mainstream characters are Mr. and Mrs. Fantastic. The readers need more. Spidey is that essential mirrage that keeps the married populace interested. His mirrage is real it has problems and he loves his wife and she in return loves him. They fight to make it work, how much more realistc can you get? But marvel wants to destroy that. I hope and pray that they see the value in Peter and Mary Jane and that their writers are encouraged to keep their marriage together. And if they do indeed kill MJ what other sell out can we expect next? One loved one gone is a tragedy but two loved ones killed is a stunt. Keep Hope Alive.
God Bless

i too have been a spidey fan all my life and when i saw peter reveal himself i has so angry i didnt know what to do with myself im all for charictor development but not when it pull the charictor away for its core spidey NEEDS to be that lovible nerd he always was at heart thats what makes him such a solid charictor his morals and his innocence and i think that this discision robbed him of that. and i believe 100% spidey needs to ditch that lame suit and get with cap. i hate what theyve been doing to him hes classic that means you need to stop CHANGING and keep on DEVELOPING

'Everyman no more'
they are systematically destroying spider-man. first the new powers, then the costume (eyes roll back with disgust) now his last relateble everyman quality is gone! who is gonna relate to him now that hes famous? britney'its so hard being famous' spears? this is just pure sensationalism - MAKE MINE RETCONNED!

no privacy
It is going to be hard for spidey for the rest of his life. He not only has to protect the people he loves and defeat his villians( some super heros) , but he also has to watch out for the public. Some people that hated him before might try to hurt his family or anyone he comes in contact with. With out a mask is going to make things harder. For example, He won't be able to go to the grocery store with out a crowd shouting spiderman. THE BUTLER OUT

Why wont JMS leave!?
JMS needs to hang it up and get away from Spider-man, he started off alright, then he sent Spidey into the trash bin.

The only GOOD spider comic is going away anyw
With the death of Spider-Girl, I'm dropping off my last Marvel title. I admit I haven't picked up an issue of Spider-Man in years. This is because all comics but the M2 universe pretty much suck. In order to appeal to an older readership (most of us) the traditional superhero comic which drew us in in the first place ceased to exist. This happened in the late 80's and early 90's, when everything and everybody went dark and brooding-like. The language used in the comics changed, we saw a lot more cursing, the CCA symbol all but dissappeared from most books' covers, and the 3rd person narrator boxes evaporated into thin air. Not only that, but the art in comics turned to disproportionate, overly exaggerated stuff that lacked details in every which way. Seldom from then on would we see the likes of Neal Adams and Jim Starlin... but I digress. My point is that from that point on, comics have been on a downwards spiral towards mediocrity. We have seen our heroes reinvented, and act out of character for years only to have them eventually, painfully, come full circle. This is because writers and editors have forgotten what Super-hero comic books are supposed to be: fun.

You shouldn't radically change a character to make it more appealing; you should just create a new one. When you mess with a classic, bad things happen. Have we learned nothing from previous changing the costume nonsense? We always come back to the classic.

Anyway, on with the history review:
Then, out of nowhere, we got the M2 universe, and along with it, Spider-Girl. Finally! comics were fun again, appropriate for all ages, with hardly any cursing, and with the traditional, theatrical supervillians and above all, the fantastic, noble and witty, larger than life dialogue. Now Spider-girl is going away, and with it, the whole M2 universe. Tom DeFalco, I hope you read this, sir. Thank you for bringing back the traditional super-hero genre, if only for these few years. Quality books like yours are seldom seen today. I hope we get to see Mayday and the F5 back every now and then, even if it's only in one-shots or limited series.

Until then, I'll be reading collected editions and back issues from when comics were creative, dynamic, and fun, and didn't have their characters act out of character or change their costume on a yearly basis.

i don't understand...
I don't understand Spidey's choice... this does a lot more than effect him. Every single villain that has the slightest grudge against now knows the easiest way to defeat Spiderman... his love for his family. But I can see the way it can make the Civil War storyline more interesting and deep.

I do like the irony of the superhero with the slogan "With great power, comes great resposibilty" to be the first big hitter to reveal themselves.

Also, despite the event at the school... it is still fairly easy for fans to root against Superhuman Registration Act even with Iron Man being the spokesperson... (let's face it, he always has been one of the more shady superheroes in Marvel...but that is why he's one of my favorite)

BUT with such a fan favorite as Spidey, it makes you stop and go... huh? wait! he should be on the other side... and it makes you wonder who else will go to Act support side?

A beautifully written and drawn series so far...can't wait for the rest.

Paz afueda,
Albert

The great thing about all of this...
It's a breath of fresh air. It might be a little polluted to some fans, but fresh nonetheless! In my opinion, with the unmasking of Peter and all, it's letting go and moving on. Moving past things that have held him down. Moving on from Gwen(Curse the 'Sins Past' storyline) and moving on from Uncle Ben. Now when I say moving on, I mean, not loosing these people, but rather just getting a chance to focus on the future. In a nutshell, I LOVE the Civil War series. A shame I can't collect all the tie-ins... Maybe you guys at Marvel can Hook me up! haha 8)

is that we have been watching for a while the whole story of what happened to Daredevil when he was unmasked. Those have been great stories though limited to immediate aftermath and it is yet to be seen how Marvel makes that work in the long run. So here we have in the same town, in the same community even, a character (Spidey) who has seen all the trouble that unmasking has caused DD. Foggy Nelson is assassinated. Murdock is in jail and on trial. His wife has had to flee the country it seems. Everyone even remotely associated with him is under intense scrutiny. All of this is theoretically very public and Peter should be aware of it. But for some reason, he never even thinks "Gosh, DD did this and look how badly it has turned out for him." From a characterization, continuity, and story telling perspective this seems weak. It is also hard to understand why Peter had to unmask publicly. I get that he has to register to stick with Iron Man. But does that registration automatically mean that the identity is going to be public? I would assume (and it was certainly implied in related issues) that the government would at least try to keep these identities secret just as they do for some covert operatives. No good explanation is given by Iron Man as to why he and Spider Man need to be unmasked publicly. Weak story telling. Making a change like this is hard. But to even hope to get fans to accept the change, it needs to be done in a believable way.

...i mean, the guy have been through hard times and we all fans know that. But this is too much to take. He`s obviously going to be fired from job not to mention now each psycho with a minimum "non finished" job on spidey is going to have a huge advantage. Well..he`s my hero since i had 6 and i`m 27 now but ,taking some risks on being called "jerk" ,i still have faith on him although he`s not going to have a rest on some long time now. Just pray Spidey.

Cry babies
Waaa Waaaa Waaa jeeze. All ya are cryin about what the creators have done to ol spidey but if you think about it how long could someone really put up with the stupid secret ID thing. Man up?
Puh-lease! How does dropping your secret identity have anything to do with manning up? The whole point to a secret identity is to protect your loved ones from retaliation from enemies or the government.
"Manning" up? I think not. Mark my words: Marvel will somehow, in the future, go back to Spidey's ID being secret. Whether it's a no prize explanation, or a cosmic revamp, this will eventually go away. They tried doing it to Daredevil, only to bring Matt Murdock back, and then reveal his ID again. Well, the pendulum will swing once more.

But what do I care? I don't buy this book anymore... Oh yeah, that's right... I remember now... it was the absolute lack of logic on the "manning up" post that made me reply...

I believe in soul comic books
i believe in soul comic books. Comic boos written not for money, but for the love of the hero, wanting to make us all strive to want to be like that hero. It feels to me like this new spiderman is just a gimic used to fill an ampty space of writters block. Ok so he unmasked himself as a good deed... but why does he have to change his costume as well. are you kidding me!

I'm interested to see where it moves from her
Every step of Civil War is captivating. Its Cliffhanger endings and edge of the seat writting keeps me tangled in its luring web (pun pun pun). Peter Parker, The Amazing Spider Man, Is one of the most memorable books I have read in ages. I feel that what ever you guys (Marvel) have planned for Mr. Parker will be okay by me.

The Suit and The Future
The suit serves it's purpose. It was meant to lure Spider-Man into a false sense of security as well as Avengers Tower. Peter did not have a problem accepting the suit at the time because Tony was there to help him through "THE OTHER" storyline. Also Peter was having so many good things happen to him at once after a string of bad things. At that point most people would be willing to take in charity as he did.

Marvel knows what they are doing. They are showing that Spider-Man has the most heart in the Marvel Universe and the most to lose. Joe Quesada and JMS have come out and said that they want to bring Spider-Man back to his roots and that the hardest part about writing Spidey is Mary Jane. That is a possible direction that they couldbe taking this.

Lucky Number Seven
Let me say first. I think this will bring some fresh new stories. However, I think Marvel handled this as badly as they have been handling everything as of late – sloppy. There have been numerous drastic changes with Spider-Man lately. He finds out Gwen was a tramp that cheated on him (SOTP), he has a perfect life with Gwen ripped away from (HOM), he dies and comes back with dumb new powers that are ignored (The Other – wrist spikes … ugh), he is shoved into a badly designed costume with even more dumb powers (AMS), he plays Tony Stark’s lackey (AMS) and now is unmasked publicly for a law that does not require it be public (CW).

Seven Things On This Blog That Make My Head Hurt:

7. “Spydey was way behind his enemies and actual Marvel Universe, he needed to become more powerful”

Obviously you have never read any of the Spider-Man comics I have read. At one time all he had was strength, speed, intelligence, determination, wit and a spider-sense. In those days he trashed the entire team of X-Men, went toe to toe with Hulk numerous times and pretty much ran circles around any villain in the MU. All on what he was originally given. That’s powerful.

6. "BTW, this huge event (unmasked) it could not have happened without Spidey’s evolution and Tony’s new suit, …… Tony’s right arm in civil war. "

Again you have never read any of the Spider-Man comics I have read. Peter never let anyone treat him like a lap dog. JMS writes him like he has no independent thought. The Spider-Man I have come to know is the Spider-Man who has told the Avengers, including Tony to stuff their membership rather than give up Dr. Bruce Banner.

5. “I don't understand what is so wrong with spider-man unmasking. And in no way, was that choice an "easy way out", or a "cowardly act". With what he has on the line, for him to reveal his identity was an act of responsibility.”

Is it responsible to knowingly put your loved ones in harms way. Peter knows the pain of losing a loved one to a villain with the knowledge of his identity. The fact is he did not have to reveal his identity publicly. He could have did the responsible thing and registered privately then dealt with anything that came along if that info fell into the wrong hands. Responsibility is not making a choice based on another’s (Tony’s) selfish belief.

4. “Moving past things that have held him down. Moving on from Gwen(Curse the 'Sins Past' storyline) and moving on from Uncle Ben.”

Just like those running Marvel, you don’t get who Peter is. No matter how many stories you read, you will never get who Peter Parker is.

3. “I like the new techno-armor suit, but would like to see it more closely resemble his old costume (and not the Scarlet Spider's). I've wished for this change in costume design for 33 years.”

Please tell me you are joking … Please.

2. “Waaa Waaaa Waaa jeeze. All ya are cryin about what the creators have done to ol spidey but if you think about it how long could someone really put up with the stupid secret ID thing. He was a kid when he made up the alter ego and now he's a grown @@&@&&&! man for christ sakes! Give him some credit for Manning up.
Ya should take after ol' Spidey and Man-up!!”

First off, the creators have done nothing to Spider-Man. The morons currently in control have. I would not call a decision that will for sure bring devastating results to one of his loved ones “Manning Up”. Especially, when it wasn’t Peter’s original decision to begin with.

1. “Marvel knows what they are doing. They are showing that Spider-Man has the most heart in the Marvel Universe and the most to lose. Joe Quesada and JMS have come out and said that they want to bring Spider-Man back to his roots and that the hardest part about writing Spidey is Mary Jane. That is a possible direction that they couldbe taking this.”

Marvel does not know what they are doing or this would not be another drastic change in a long run of senseless drastic changes for this great character. MJ is not the problem with Spider-Man. Great stories have been told with MJ as his wife. KRAVEN’S LAST HUNT PEOPLE! Marvel thinks readers can’t relate to a married Spider-Man. A good writer can make a reader relate. I am not a 15 year old but I can enjoy and relate to Ultimate Spider-Man.

On an end note I am not a Marvel Hater. Just the opposite. I love this character and will keep reading because someday someone will fix what I do not agree with.

Man, that last post annoyed me.
Sorry, man, I hate to complain, but that post "Lucky Number Seven" just irked me a lot. First and foremost, it spoke authoritatively like the opinions expressed were utter, undebateable facts. Most people disagree with it, I think, and cutting down everyone's ideas is just being closeminded and jerky. Okay, for point 6, if you remember in Spider-man Civil War #2 (#533), he tells Tony exactly that he won't be jerked around by him and he isn't actually his "boss". As for the responsibility spiel in point five, remember that he wasn't GOING to register AT ALL, much less in front of all of America. It was Aunt May, one of the two people he cares about more than his own life, who told him the responsible thing to do is go up there and make her proud (On a side note, if he registered privately, do you really think the big villains wouldn't figure out a way to find out his identity?). Lastly, I wish you would stop criticizing Staczynski, Miller and the rest. Straczysnski is one of the best writers Amazing has had, and Miller I think is doing an excellent job with Civil War.

JJ's response???
Does any one else think that JJ won't just stop at a lawsuit on Peter ? I mean he did sound REALLY ticked off in "Amazing Spider-Man #533" This should be very interesting.

In Response
I'm sorry I annoyed you but again its just my opinion. It has no more merit then any other opinion on this blog, including yours. But I have to add a #8 now because JMS is not one of the best writers Amazing has ever had. He started out good but quickly went down hill. His minuses greatly outweigh his pluses.

Yes Peter finally mans up after months of being Tony's wuss. The Peter I've been reading over the years would have told him to stuff it awhile ago.

Telling off Tony
Yeah i have to agree i did like it when spidey let Tony have it , That whole "i only call you boss becuase i know you don't like it " line was just brilliant. I can't wait to see what happens next.

*%*@#@%@ No!!!!!
J. Jonah's is going to fire peter and peter will be @$#@$%@$@ up because every one knows who spidey is now, and he wont be able to get a job. Aunt may will be shocked and mary jane will have nothing to do with peter cuz he lied to her.

Posted by IronMan18 on 2006-07-08 10:59:07
she already knows
aunt may won't be shocked because she knows Peter is Spider-Man and its naturally expected to be difficult after unmasking like that

Posted by david andrews on 2006-07-08 12:26:53
Die as a hero!
I believe that unmasking Spider-man is not as bad idea as it seems to be! Peter Parker will earn the respect of so many people. It was an act of both great courage and stupidity. Now he will be on the run for the rest of his life! More deadly villains will come to the scene. I think that this is a great opportunity for Spider-Man to have a heroic end! There is no secret identity and everyone will know everything about him,so he is more fragile, although he is stronger than every other time after the (other) events! Stay tuned and we will see if unmasking will be the beginning of spider-man’s end.

a perfect life
now that spidey has unmasked himself, it'll mean his life will be perfect... people give him respect, no more money problems, makes good superhero friends and everybody will live happily ever after like the happiest little elf!!! BORING I liked the fact that spidey had money problems and girl problems and people bad-mouthing him in the news paper 'cos we could all relate to that stuff, but now he's going off to have a trouble-free life, with his family and himself protected by the avengers its like he's distanced himself from the readers and is no longer the high-school geek who just out of chance, a radio active spider bit him. he is no longer the super hero who had no training but still tried to do good even though he was a 15-year old kid!
Don't even get me started on the new "iron man side-kick" costume...

Thanks for answer

Ok, ok, ok
I belive this was a good desicion, yes, Peter has grown-up, and we've grown with him, now that he unmasked himself he won't have to dissaper all the time and people will understand know that they know who he really is. About the villians, it doesn't matter what they know Spidey can still beat them anyday of the week.

Hmmm,

I am as of right now sitting on the fence for this one. Part of me hates the idea of Peter unmasking himself (yes I feel that he is selling out and giving in) but at the same time I know the story is not over. I have a feeling he is going to be dealing with a lot of life problems because of this decision (like he used to) which in a way is good. I think we may actually get a lot of good stories from this idea.

One thing is I am glad to see the Daily Bugle playing a part in Peter's life again as a thorn or otherwise. I was actually missing good ol J.J.

Spidey Sense...Going Crazy
I just statred getting back into comics a little before this CW thing started....and man am i hooked. But i believe that spider-man taking his mask off is by far one of the coolest things ever. I know he is going to be draggged through the mud for a while. I mean the CW doesn't stop untill Nov! But i know that the writers have some great plan at the end of the tunnel. So far i have not been diapointed and will keep following.

W.W.B.D.? What would Ben do?
I would have to agree Peter has gone through a lot of situations in his life just to enjoy the readers, but this decision seems to be some what of a dead. Unless Marvel has another impulse decision to make in Petes life. I mean now this one decision would change his whole future. How will Spider-girl from the future reflect from it? Also, in the beggining Pete had become a hero because he relized what decision he did caused his Uncle Ben to die. The question we are left with at the end really is What would Uncle Ben would of done if he was in Petes position? Would he have gone legit because of some reckless superheros? Or would he have practiced his freedom of privacy from the world? Honestly, I think this is a great and exciting situation that will make or break the future of marvel! Its just really unfortunite that Pete is smack dap in the middle of it and like always it will cost him a life of a loved one. But from reading the Spider-girl comics it seems to be that he ends up doing fine and kind of looks like Tony Stark in my opinion! I cant wait to see what the outcome will be for the marvel universe!

Spideys obviously going to regret what he did and join The Cap so i dont get what everyones so upset about. keep your bad comments to yourselves for later issues. Marvel didn't mess up.

Parents
Maybe when he now works with the Goverment (and not "only" with Shield and the Avengers) he knows more about his parents. Maybe he will get revenge at a Terrorist or something else?
This would be very exciting.
And when he get Unmsaked what for Problems will be come from his friend (like Harry Osborn). Now all his friends are Superheroes.
But it's very exciting to see Spiderman unmasked.

Posted by The_Other on 2006-07-12 14:32:51
with great power . . .
I'm surprised at how many people think that Spidey "sold out" for a job and a new costume. If he really was selling out, I think he'd be asking for a lot more. Peter unmasked because he felt it was the responsible thing to do. Sure, he couldn't cash a check made out to "Spider-Man" but OTOH he couldn't be sued for causing injuries or damage either. As for putting May and MJ in danger, cops' families are in the same boat but they don't wear masks or hide their identities.

Posted by spyder77 on 2006-07-13 03:37:52
not the same old Spidey
No kidding. He's hasn't been for DECADES! Forget the married-to-a-supermodel part. How many of you can relate to having clones of yourself running around?

As for the character changing, he has and he hasn't. The original spidey was always a loner looking to fit in. sure he turned down the FF but he went to THEM for a job, not the other way around. As for turning down the Avengers, wasn't part of it that Peter had to worry about taking care of Aunt May? Spidey never had a problem working with others (even outside of Marvel Team-Up). He just couldn't do it on a regular basis (which was why he could never hold a regular job for long). So joining the Avengers is the culmination of a longstanding desire to belong, to be accepted.

OTOH, Peter is older now. He's been married for a couple years. He's thinking about the future, maybe about having kids. It's easy to tell your boss to "take this job and shove it" when you're college age, but when you're older you realize there's more at stake than just your feelings. Sure MJ makes a lot of money when she's working (and how often is that?) but modelling careers don't last long (a fact both Peter and MJ are aware of).

Jamison's lawsuit
I'm just wondering if Jamison is going to win his lawsuit and if her does, where Peter's going to get the money. It was one of the reason's Peter never came out before.

He's becoming an epic hero
I like the way Spidey has grown and i think his support of the regisrtation act will gain him more public trust and hes finally being accepted by his collegues and the public as a true hero. I like the iron spidey costume, so long as he keeps the red and blue one. I like the new powers except for the stingers in his arms, just weird. also, does anyone else think that Venom has been completely ruined now Eddie Brock has gone?

open your minds
i'm pissed on the people who said that Marvel screwed up on this.. hey, who are you to say that they screwed up? why are you people getting angry on this? Marvel created this storyline, more likely thay know how to end this one.. people don't just write comic books just for the sake, of course they have some plans that they have already thought about about really hard.. it's their story, not yours.. so don't go telling them what to do unless your one of the writers.. you want a different storyline? then go write your own comicbook.. else just sit back and enjoy..

A new Era for the Spider?
I've never been a big fan of the spider, but I appreciate doing something that is going to make the character go to a new place. The bad guys are good, the good guys are bad and Spidey is fighting the Cap. Nice Job Marvel!

Response to cristiane
I argee with you , I think he should have kept the mask on. I know he was trying to prevent the war but the mask was a thing of honor and I believe as a Spider man fan since i could talkkind of guy, he should have left it on. I mean killing him off then rebirth was big enough, but he should have kept his identity a secrect because now everyone and their brother will be targeting Mj and Aunt May. I mean now noone is safe and I will miss the days when he took the pics and everyone was always curious to how he got them angles. I am like cristiane where i miss the old stories because he has been an inspiration to my life, a role model you may say with his stories of being the hero but just being a normal guy, but now he is losing that essence of a regular joe that STan, the man bought to life so many years ago and hopefully, one day they can return spiderman to his former glory he once had

i never would have thought he would reveal his secret idnetity to the whole world, but i suppose its a twist in the spiderman story.

Why he did it?
Peter Parker isn't crazy, it could very well be one of his clones set on destroying Parker's life (more than it already is). Or he could just want to see the look on JJJ's face!

Worst Secret Ever Kept
So many baddies already knew the real identity of Spider-Man. Osbourne knew, Doc Ock knew, Vemon knew.... and probobly a bunch that I can't think of at the moment. They just never did anything about it. I don't know why Marvel is suddenly forgetting that. The fact that he came out doesn't really mean a whole lot in that area. I'm glad he finially came forward.

Lee Harvey Parker
Spidey did sell out and that is for certain and it can be seen in some of the doubts and confrontations he has with Tony in the last issue (534). I don't like the way that Peter has become so subservient to Stark, and this has been setup for at least 1-2 years. Just because he is your landlord do you have to share your biggest secret with the world and become a poster boy for government repression? There is still time in the arc (s), but Spidey has some mighty fine extricating to do.
At any rate, Make Mine Marvel (for better or in this case so far worse).
