Talkin' Softball
2007-07-20 13:27:19
Marvel’s softball team sent rivals Archie back to Riverdale in tears on Friday night walloping them 18 to 8 (or somewhere in that neighborhood) in the second game of an after work double header. We chalked up a victory in the first game against Simon and Schuster 12 to 10 as well. Bringing our record to an even .500. Though we held a lead through most the game, we had to fend off a surge in the top of the 7th to hold onto the win.

I went 2 for 3 in the second game with two singles, and RBI and a run scored. Didn’t play much of the first game because I was late getting to field. It’s not that easy to make it up to 100th and Central Park west by 5:30, especially when you’re supposed to send out the canons for the Marvel Zombies HC by the end of the day…

Coming into left field toward the end of the Simon and Schuster matchup, I threw out a runner at home plate. He’d been trying to score from second on an outfield single, but star pitcher Joel Safir in Finance was covering home on the play and made the tag. Against Archie, I had a similar play with a runner trying to make it from 1st to 3rd on an outfield single with mailroom guy-by-day/3rd-baseman extraordinaire-by night, Henry Valentin.

John Dokes, VP of Marketing and Business Development – as well as one heavily involved behind the scenes in bringing you these blogs – brought his power swing against Archie ringing in a triple and another hit or two.

Thursday marks the first of several summer matchups against the Distinguished Competition. Alas, I don’t have a weekly column running through all of our titles to talk smack about our rivals like some... So you’ll have to settle for hearing about it here on the trades blog. Besides, I like to save that for the field.

One of the other, more publicized games against our mainstay rivals will be taking place during San Diego Comicon with Wizard providing coverage. Unfortunately, that weekend my sister is getting married so I can’t make it to the Con. Don’t get me wrong. I’m ecstatic for my sister, but the timing is unfortunate -- particularly since our Fantastic Four Omnibus was nominated for an Eisner, and the ceremony is during the con. Oh well. Anyone who’s at the con, be sure to cheer for us at the game and the Eisners.

One person who will not be at either softball game, despite sporting a Marvel jersey with number 63, is editor Jen Grunwald. She just liked the way the jerseys looked and wanted one for her very own. So feel to make fun of her freely.

I’ll try to post the results of Thursday’s game before I head out on vacation Friday for a few days.

Best,
Mark

I suck at all sports
Rather than ruin the team's standings, I decided agaist putting them through the misery I would bring if I played. I think that's pretty noble of me and NO call to make fun, thank you very much. #*$& Beazley...

Any guesses as to why I chose 63 as my #? There's a very geeky answer...

Peanuts and *@*&&% Is it because its the year that the X-Men and Iron Man were introduced? I think its very cool that you guys continue the rivalry out on the field. You know my support is for the Big M.

There's no "I" in team, but there is in Sabou
Bob Sabouni, VP of Custom Publishing, came downstairs with Mike Bagu, Research Manager and the man with the permits, to complain about how I didn't call out his accolades in the recent games. To be fair, Bob did have some powerful hits including a home run or two, but to call attention to that would mean I'd have to bring up how he was dogging it on the basepath on that one double he could have stretched into a triple...Remember kids, smoking is bad for you!

Next time I'll see if I can scan in the scorecard so you can see our full lineup and who did what.

Subject lines too short...
Darn the short subject lines. That previous one should read:
There's no "I" in team, but there is in Sabouni

RE: Henry Valentin -- The Ultimate One
Henry, I did mention that. Read it again... Even called you extraordinary.

"Against Archie, I had a similar play with a runner trying to make it from 1st to 3rd on an outfield single with mailroom guy-by-day/3rd-baseman extraordinaire-by night, Henry Valentin."
