Dodging Bullets
2007-07-23 10:24:33
Neither rain, nor gale-force wind, nor thunder, nor threat of lightning kept Marvel’s softball team from knocking down the DC Bullets by a score of 6-3 in a hard-fought game called in the top of the seventh due to torrential downpour. I’m talking buckets here. Rain had been falling on and off the entire game, but at some point in the 5th or 6th the skies opened and drenched us to the bone. Marvel had a man on 2nd with two outs in the top of the 7th holding onto a 3 run lead since the 4th and having kept DC scoreless since the 1st inning, when the teams mutually decided to pack it in. Several Marvelites ran for shelter under a nearby tunnel/bridge in the park to wait it out. We decided to brave the rain once again when the nearby storm drain became completely overrun and started flooding. The drain became a river flowing from the field level into and over the drain (just before the ring of stones in the B&W).

Anyway, the game. Like I said in an earlier post about last week’s games, it’s not easy getting up to 100th and Central Park West by 5:30. Not sure exactly why, but we were also playing short-staffed, initially with only 8 players, so DC was kind enough to spot us a pitcher and catcher until a latecomer arrived in the 4th. Normally our roster has 5 or 6 more than that in a game. DC shot out ahead at the start scoring 3 in the bottom of the 1st, but the Marvel defense became rock solid after that keeping the Bullets off the boards the rest of the game. We must have been wearing our Kevlar.

Marvel scored one run in the 3rd on singles by Vrej, Seth, and Mike (with the RBI). The 4th revealed the true “Batmen,” however with a Godfrey Powell getting to first on an error, an RBI double from Logan, another single from Vrej, RBI single from Eric, and a base-clearing triple from Seth who then scored on a wild throw to home plate.

Neither team clocked any more runs, so the game became a duel on the field. Eric made a phenomenal diving catch in Left Center and promptly shouted "Sit Down, Superman!" The catch ended the inning stranding several DC baserunners.

I didn’t have any major effect on the game batting 2-4 with two singles. My last at bat in the 6th, the DC shortstop made an outstanding play, diving to grab what should have been a line drive single to the outfield. After he threw me out at first I had to congratulate him on the play.

Attached are the remnants of the scorecard. It’s a little worse for the wear with the rain. And it’s jumbled with some of out last minute dropouts and switching between scorekeepers – we batted around in the 4th but someone started scoring the 6th in the 4th. If my printer were working at home, I’d redo it for you, but I’m out of ink. I’ll clean it up and repost sometime next week.

These last two shots are of the victorious team marching home as the sun starts to shine through. Marvel players who sought out shelter with us pictured from left to right are Vrej Barghamian (3B and Pitcher); Logan Welde (3B); Bob Sabouni (SS); Eric Feitelson (LCF); Judith Stephens (2B); and Mike Bagu (1B and Captain).

I’m on vacation for the next couple days, so have fun reading craziness from Mike and Jen while I’m away. And maybe if you bug him enough, Jeff will post something.

Mark

[PS -- sorry for the delay in reporting. I sent all this to Jen and Mike to post on Friday but they were too busy "Putting out books" instead of giving you important breaking news. I have some more cool stuff to share with you once I'm all caught up.]
Slingers Trade?
Good work on the game with DC.

Now on an unrelated note, since you are the trades, I figure this is where I voice my question. Is there any chance for a Slingers trade in the future?

I've noticed that since the team broke up, they have made some appearances elsewhere: Iron Man arresting Prodigy during the Civil War, Hornet being killed by Wolverine in Enemy of the State, Ricocher appearing in the Runaways. With them being brought back into the public eye, it seems like a good time to release their adventers into a trade.

It's a 13-issue series, but the first issue may be tricky, being four varients that actually have varient content as well as varient covers. Most of the story in those four are the same, except when it cuts away and follows the maincharacter of that varient. I assume these may be able to be spliced together or something.

Basically, I would like all of this in one or two books so I don't have to go through my back issues, which I'm sure you know, can be a pain. It's why trades are so good. No searching for back issues and reading several comics for a story arc. It's all right there, and it looks good in a book shelf.

Thanks for reading this if you do. Have a nice day.

RE: Home Run vs. Triple?
Seth has taken issue with my scoring of his monster hit. He thought it was a clean home run. To be fair he did make the turn before the throw had made it into the infield. I had the impression that he held just past third until he'd seen the throw was off into the backstop. Even though none of you were there, I'll let fandom be the judge. You get to decide whether Seth hit a home run or a triple with an error on the throw. Remember this very important decision affects whether Seth gets another RBI. Choose carefully.

DC V MARVEL
I know we dont like to say it but there's just no denying it now: MARVEL truly is the best.

its funny.
its funny reading about people who are literally sitting behind you...you'd never expect Vrej or Eric to be any good at baseball. Good job everyone, hopefully I can join the team next season.
