Getting some press
2007-03-22 13:30:22
Newsarama has an article up about the new Premiere Classic HC line with more preview pages of the interior design.

http://www.newsarama.com/marvelnew/MCPHC/MPCHCLine.html

In the interview I asked the fans what they would like to see reprinted in the Premiere Classic Line of HCs. Reply here and let us know.
Trades
Off the top of my head, I'd like to see Premiere Classic Hardcovers of:

The Dark Phoenix Saga

The Frank Miller Wolverine Miniseries

Miller's Man Without Fear Mini

The Death Of Gwen Stacy

I'm sure more will spring to mind later...

From the "More Kraven" comments
other Classic story to consider
The entire Starlin Captain Marvel/Adam Warlock/Thanos storyline, This demands to be reprinted in a decent format. Captain Marvel has at least been collected, but Warlock has only been reprinted (at least 3 times by last count), and it really should be. It's a stand-out highlight of 1970s Marvel Comics. How about a 2 volume set? Life and Death of Captain Marvel and the Life and Death of Adam Warlock?

Please?

DD: Man Without Fear by Miller/JRJR
Inhumans by Jenkins/Lee
Wolverine by Claremont/Miller
DD: Born Again by Miller/Mazzuchelli
Thor: Surtur War by Simonson
Avengers Forever by Busiek/Pacheco

I'd be all for the Avengers: Under Siege storyline when the Masters of Evil take over the mansion.

Thinking of DeMatteis/Zeck collaborations....
I would love to see some form of collection of Dematteis' run on Captain America - most of which featured art by Zeck and which also featured Vermin prominently during the Baron Zemo arc if I remember correctly. This was the run that made me love Captain America and I haven't had a chance to read it in decades. I'd love to read it again, and I think that there are a bunch of people who would appreciate the opportunity to both read the stories and see Zeck's takes on S.H.E.I.L.D, Zemo, Deathlok, Cap, etc.
I've also been really itching to have collections that would give me the opportunity to read Englehart's complete runs on Avengers and Captain America. I know that the Essential Avengers should be barrelling through his run there, but I'd like to see them in color if I could.
One thing that I'm wondering is if you are tracking how the new Superman collections of Doomsday and Our Worlds at War are doing since they are more or less the same size as the Essentials collections, but are in color and are only about 10 bucks more at retail price than those collections have been. I'll just say that I would be eager to buy collections of that size, at that price point, in color of almost any classic Marvel runs you could put out. I know that that might not be feasible as there are any number of production costs that I wouldn't have any knowledge of that could prevent the existence of such a product at that kind of price point, but I figured I'd toss it out there.

Thinking outside the box a bit...
So much of Marvel's backlog is already currently available, how about stuff that isn't? One thing I'd love to see offered is the Black Knight. Most US fans will be completely unaware of this stuff as it appeared back in 1979 in the UK Hulk Weekly. Composed of about 50-55 3-page episodes written by Steve Parkhouse and illustrated by Paul Neary and John Stokes, it was an excellent completely self contained serial. Essentially a Tolkienesque superhero mix, it bridges the gap between Captain Britain's own material and the Alan Davis redesign.
The story starts when Merlyn's champion on Otherworld, the Dane Whitman Black Knight encounters an amnesiac man on a beach. When the dark forces of the evil Modred attack, the amnesiac is revealed as Cap Britain, who joins forces with the Knight and other heroes such as Vortigern the Walker and the elfin Moondog as they defend Camelot. It's unseen by most readers, fondly remembered by UK fans and features a pair of fairly popular heroes. I'd love to see that dusted up and collected, even in an Essentials format (as it was originally black and white anyway).

Those of you asking for the Frank Miller Wolverine, or Weapon X... it's already available in hardcover format, and not just any hardcover, but an oversized one! BEST OF WOLVERINE vol. 1 collects both miniseries plus three other Wolverine comics for $29.99.

The Death of Gwen Stacy
The Tree of Knowledge (Daredevil)

And as a side note, can we PLEASE! have an Essential Inhumans? I know they haven't had much of a featured series, but you could throw in the old FF issues.

Lots of stuff!
I'm a big fan of the classic stuff getting collected and given special treatment! I will definitely get this.

I think you need to collect "definitive" stuff from each of your main characters.

Simonson's Thor (at least the Ballad of Beta Ray Bill, which was collected years ago. It covers his first 4 issues.)

Miller's Born Again (I don't currently own it in TPB, so that's one guaranteed sale!)

Miller and Romita Jr.'s Man Without Fear (see above)

The Death of Jean DeWolff (I do have this trade, but would upgrade)

Armor Wars (It's due for a reprint)

Stern and Byrne's Captain America (why hasn't this been reprinted???) Jeez...Promote the best work of the character that you're trying to push hardest!)

Roger Stern and John Romita Jr. Spider-Man.

John Byrne Hulk and Alpha Flight.

Simonson Fantastic Four.

Simonson and Simonson X-Factor.

Hulk Future Imperfect/The End collection.

Dark Phoenix Saga

Stern, Buscema, and Palmer Avengers.

DeMatties and Zeck Captain America.

Out of Print Marvel Masterworks
There are a lot of great suggestions on the modern Premiere line, but totally off the subject (with apologies, there is probably a better place to ask this but I'm a novice), what are the plans for getting back in print some of the Marvel Masterworks long out-of-print like Fantastic Four Vol 5, Amazing Volume 5, etc. etc. I'm a retailer & have customers constantly asking about these & the other volumes, desperately trying to complete their collections but not to keen to drop $200 in the collector's market. I would think a new print run of these would sell better than some of the newer, lesser know Masterworks like Human Torch, etc. I know our customers are really frustrated not being able to fill in their Masterworks for Avengers, Thor, etc,

Posted by Visioncomix on 2006-07-12 15:04:30
I 2nd Simonson's Thor
The Hood by BKV himself...
Slingers! best unkowns out there? I think so.

I'd like to see
Simonson's Thor (complete)
the original Squadron Supreme mini-series
Starlin's Adam Warlock

Classic Hardcovers
What about the original X-Men Brood Saga? Uncanny #161-167, which has never been reprinted or collected at all, comprises one of the most dramatic, most terrifying X-Men stories ever--- and to a degree marks the moment when Claremont took the reins all on his own, and brought the book to a different place than the much-lauded (and endlessly reprtined) Claremont/Byrne years. Paul Smith's beautiful, elegant pencils lend themselves particularly to a modern recoloring process, and the story itself (handled initially by Cockrum--- who badly needs any residuals that would come of something like this) was for many the definitive "X-MEN Space Opera" almost one hundred issues before the Jim Lee "Warskrulls" arc currently sollicted for a collection.

And what about Bill Sienkiwicz' NEW MUTANTS run? The Demon Bear? Legion? And that inSANE, incredible artwork?

New Warriors TP/HC
I'm probably the only person requesting this but with the recent role of the NW in Civil War, would be great to get the older Series 1 of NW in TP or better yet HC. I have been a big fan of them for years and their stories were very influential to me in my teen early 20 years so i have a strong fondness for them. I own every single issue of Vol 1 and 2 (sorry vol 3 not my cup of tea) but would happlily buy them all again if Marvel reprinted them in TP or HC format. Great Nicieza, Bagley, Robertson work. Nothing but the Truth one of my all time favorites stories! Please consider!

Posted by artwoo on 2006-07-12 16:19:36
Sienkewicz New Mutants
I beyond second the above request for this run. The art on this needs to be seen in a better format than Essential, and it would be wonderful to have it in print in an appropriate format.

Great Suggestions
Keep 'em coming! All I can say is that some of you will be very happy with our upcoming plans and some of you run crying into the night -- not because of which books we're releasing; you just seem to do that every so often...

C'mon, Mark, how about some hints?
It's not like this is a top secret project that has to wait for the right time to make an announcement. What are some of the plans? What great classics are on the way? besides the obvious Born Again.

Other HC's I'd buy
Incredible Hulk: Ground Zero by David/McFarlane
Revenge of the Sinister Six by Erik Larsen
DD: Born Again AND DD:Man Without Fear

Punisher: War Journal by Potts and Jim Lee (all 19 issues in 2 vols)
Heroes Reborn(FF, Iron Man, Cap) arcs by Lee, Portacio and Liefeld

Thunderbolts
Thunderbolts (vol 1) #1-12
I don't think any of the early issues apart from #1-4 have been reprinted in any format but I think the first 12 issues would look good collected in one nice package like this

And I'm in agreement with exar khun on wanting to see Spider-man: Spirits of the Earth by Charles Vess reprinted in this format

HUGE Planet Hulk Hardcover!
I would like to see the entire PLANET HULK saga encapsulated as an oversized hardcover ala the MARVEL OMNIBUS line. Please include the 14 issues of the INCREDIBLE HULK series that comprise the PLANET HULK storyline as well as the 4-issues PEACE IN OUR TIME storyline that serves as a prelude, the ILLUMINATI one-shot, excerpts from GIANT SIZE HULK, and the GLADIATOR HANDBOOK (PLUS tons of extras of course). This would make a great HULKING hardcover!

I also second the DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN shoutout. An oversized combo of INFIINITY GAUNTLET and THANOS QUEST would be nice as well.

The list
Avengers: Under Siege

Spider-Man: Origin of the Hobgoblin

Iron Man: Armor Wars

Daredevil: Love & War

Daredevil: Typhoid Mary

Elektra: Assasin

Elektra Lives Again

X-Men: The Asgard War

Also consider the old OGNs

BORN AGAIN
I think the next obvious choice is born again (if you look over at millarworld you'll see thats the most requested there too). Not only is it one of the best written marvel comics ever, but its by one of the most gifted artists ever to work at marvel and the extras you might find would be fascinating (look at the recent batman year one hardcover, they even got a new comic by mazzuchelli about the year one process).
After that the choices are less clear. I personally think the hardcover format only really makes sense for the best and most interesting artists and those are sienkewic(sp), barry windsor smith, jack kirby, and p craig russell (maybe his early dr strange AND his ninties remake?)

Also, I think you could put together a good best of marvel fanfare package, because that book had a lot of good work by people like frank miller, tony salmons, jim starlin, bws, and the most beautiful thing mazzuchelli ever did for marvel (that angel story)

It's by my favorite Avengers team ever!

But...

It's already collected, and there is much Stern, Bucema, and Palmer stuff that isn't. I vote for the Nebula Saga (255-260) or the Olympic Gods Saga (281-285), which I actually liked a little better, and it would be nice to see them collected!

Hardcover collections
I'd like to cast my vote for a complete Alan Davis Captain Britain, collecting the Alan Moore & Jamie Delano work. I know Alan still has a lot of the original artwork and a huge amount of supplementary stuff.
I'm also a big advocate of artist spotlights, considering there's a lot of good stuff out there that's out of print.
I'd love:
An Art Adams collection, with all of his annuals and one-shots.
A Kevin Nowlan collection, with his Moon Knight, Dr Strange and MCP work, particularly since we'll never see a reprint of his Outsiders Annual from the Distinguished Competiton.
3 Sienkiewicz collections - His Moon Knight run, New Mutants run, and assorted minis & covers (and there are a lot of those!).
A Mike Golden collection, although I guess his GI Joe stuff is out-of-licence. A complete Nam would be good!

On the suggestions from elsewhere, I suspect that Born Again is a given, and although it's not likely, I'd love a collection of Excalibur.

I have two questions too, one pertinent, one related!
1. What size will these be, regular or oversized?
2. What's the reprint policy on older over-sized omnibus editions? There are quite a few out of print (eg Punisher V2, New X-Men 1-3) are they likely to be reprinted?

Lastly, delighted about the new edition of Kraven. I've almost bought the older HC on ebay a few times, so I'm eagerly awaiting this!

I'm really looking forward to the Kraven book, and I'd put another vote at Born Again, but what I really want is a 4th volume of Simonson's Thor Visionaries. I'd also like some affordable Kirby - That Eternals volume that's out looks great, but it's way too expensive for me:(
It would be nice to get Emperor Doom back into print, as well.

New Mutants were OH SO GOOD...especially issues 1 - 50. I have NM Classic v1. Release the others in Premiere please!

New Warriors V1 - issues 1 - 25 very good run.

Alpha Flight v1 - Issues 1-12 plus their Uncanny Xmen appearances.

The death and life and death...of MAGIK!

Secret Wars (classic)

I know this won't get a hardcover but howabout a trade of Power Pack Classic? You can include their appearances in Uncanny X-Men too!

Posted by kuyu001 on 2006-07-17 20:43:06
I seldom buy hardcovers because a) I'm poor b) I frequently have the original issues. With that caveat, I would endorse the following for Premiere Classic release:

Frank Miller DD 1st run (Yes, I know it's been reprinted before, but how can you not?)

Frank Miller DD - Born Again (I know I'm merely adding to the chorus, but it bears repeating)

Ann Nocenti's DD run (I can't be the only person who enjoyed it. I would suggest starting somewhere near the introduction of Typhoid Mary.)

Peter David's Hulk run (Yeah, that narrows it down, doesn't it? Since it's for "classics", why not start at the beginning? I'm sure including the McFarlane-illustrated issues wouldn't hurt sales.)

The Jenkins/Lee Inhumans (Another one worth repeating.)

Dark Phoenix Saga (Seems unavoidable.)
Claremont/Miller Wolverine (I'm starting not to feel very original.)

Wolverine & Kitty Pryde (Just because.)

...and from the Not-Quite-On-Topic Dept., what about Essential format releases for:

The Essential Galactus
The Essential Inhumans
The Essential Dazzler (Hey! You did Nova!)
The Essential Spider-Woman
The Essential New Mutants
The Essential New Warriors

Hardcover, softcover, any cover!
It may not be a truly classic story, but I badly need to read Secret Wars 2 again! I would also add my voice to the support for early New Mutants issues - great stuff! Btw, I seem to have been posessed by Stan the Man - all my sentences are ending in exclamation marks!

Posted by Pallando on 2006-07-18 21:40:47
Secret Wars 2
Secret Wars 2 would be a good choice. I haven't read that in forever and I know I don't have all the issues. I found the first few issues really fascinating, though my interest petered out towards the end of the series. Still, this is one that I actually would buy.

TP Consistency
A suggestion for TPs, is it possible to maybe have some consistency in terms of the height and tradedress of the spines on TPs being printed? I have tons of Marvel TPs that have different cuts and sizes that make for awkwardness in terms of shelving. Some books are taller than others for some reason while others start to have 1 set of labeling on their spines only to be changed shortly right after which breaks some of the consisteny especially if its obvious that the set should be grouped together. The most frustrating thing is Vol numbering as there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to how they are done as I see Vol numbers thrown around all over the place then restarting again and again.

Marvel Readers Choice?
An idea i was wondering if Marvel could do is, is it possible to have some kind of ongoing formal or even informal voting from the readers of what they would like to have reprinted given a short list of maybe 4-8 books that people have already submitted to the overall pool? That way fans can not only participate and have more say in what gets printed but also get an idea of whats being considered. If something does not get printed in 1 round it an maybe roll over to another round of voting perhaps if its done say monthly or so? This would help Marvel i think to better guage fan interst on something vs shooting in the dark on what best to reprint. Also it might help bring attention to not so obvious choices or books that have been forgotten but fans still care about or remember if reminded. Voting can be based on format (HC vsTP) character, cretor, mini, story arc etc etc.

Shameless Plug: Again im going to suggest New Warriors Vol 1 Issues 1-75. HC or TP format would be great, you'd have my money there for sure. :D
