Looks like an Infinity Gem. Exactly like the one on THANOS' first knuckle in the picture...

When last scene each infinity gem was given to one of the members of the Illuminati. That is Stark, Namor, Richards, Strange, and Xavier. Each was told to hide it where no one could ever find it.
Now, is it possible that Stark left his lying around, perhaps wanting to study it? Is it possible it fell into Osborn's hands along with everything else that Stark owned? Is it possible that Stark simply forgot to take it out there when he was deleting all the information on the superhero registry, and then mindwiped himself?
It's an interesting possibility, you just have to ask how he found it.

Well I'd have to imagine a lot of Dark Reign ties back into the Illuminati series, as Secret Invasion did. A few things that are still left to be observed are the Infonity Gems, and what happened to Beyonder.
Actually, since Blackbolt turned out to be a Skrull wouldn't the Skrull have had that Infinity Gem? Just a theory, but...

Well double-checking the Illuminati it all fits.
The yellow gem is the Reality Gem (which could be how Osborn has kept himself in control) and Stark was given the Reality Gem to look after.
Though it still doesn't make a lot of sense that Thanos would work for Norman in any way.

I'd say Thanos is the longshot in all this.
The big money is on Mephisto (because of the spiderman connection) or the Beyonder (just based on all the hints about him of late).
Those however could be red herrings.
looking at who else we have. There is The Molecule man, who one might think is a no go since he just popped up in DA, and is seemingly at odds with Norman, however since that story isn't yet complete (and it's not immedeatly clear where in the story we've seen so far it takes place or if time travel could wind up being a factor) it's a possibility a long shot, but a possibility.
Odin is an interesting possibility. When we last see him, he informs us that he is fighting Sutur every day, and that they both die at the end of each day, only to rise up again to fight once more. But in this story, Thor aids Odin, and defeats Sutur. So does he still rise again, or is Odin now a free man? If so, perhaps he wants his body back, and Asguard back among the Stars just as Loki wants it, and perhaps Loki and he have made an arrangement and are using Osborn for their own ends.
Scarlet witch of course is an unknown, but then again we are assumeing that the scarlet witch pictured is the scarlet witch. Heres a posibility for you. Loki has been putting on Wanda's face for his own ends. What if Loki appears to Norman as the Scarlet Witch, promises him to put him on the thrown, directs him to form the cabal, etc. Norman, and everyone else thinks it's Scarlet Witch, but in truth, it's just good old Loki, causing mischife for his own ends.
I don't know enough about X-Man to make a guess, but I can imagine that some residual dislike of the X-Men lead to the Utopia Storyline.
The reality gem makes for an interesting twist, especially if it's something Osborn got in the take over (Reed is going to be angry at Tony when he finds out). It certainly explains what osborn was doing in his locked in his lab (in over his head) in Dark Avengers.
Really, if Osborn has the Reality Gem, he hardly needs an Ace in the Hole, but if he found the gem that might have lead him to whomever his ace is...which I guess does bring us back to Thanos.

I can see him respecting Odin, but then he and Loki would have discussed it at some point.
It has to be the Beyonder...cause Doom is always fighting Mephisto annually for his mother's soul or somethign like that.

Well given that the last run in Doom had with SW wound up with him turned to liquid metal and forced to submit to the power of Magneto, he might have some healthy respect for her insane power.
As to Mephisto, yes Doom Fights him on a regular basis, and loses, seeing Mephisto in the realm of humans makres for a frieghtening concept for someone with a beef against him.
Hey here's a crazy idea. What if Norman's back up is...no one.
Or to be more specific, Norman tells Trauma, "hey i need you to do me a favor" and he has him sit out in the hallway and becomes the greatest fear of each person at the table.
So Doom sees, I don't know, Mephisto, Loki sees Odin, Namor sees, I don't know Posideon, Emma sees, maybe the Scarlet witch, or X Man.
hey there's an idea, maybe Norman's Ace in the hole is...All of them.
He has the reality Gem, so he manipulates Reality so each person sees someone who scars the heck out of them.
It's a thought.

But I doubt that could be involved, Tony would have thought about that...as well as Reed would have brought up that possibility by now.
Then again, if that is the case, would Strange have his still now that he is "fired/retired"? Where is BlackBolt's since he was captured and now "dead"? And could Xavier handle the power of thought while he was depowered?
No wonder Reed is researchign how "to fix everything" over in FF, cause looking at this scenario, everything is messed up if the Gems are "supposedly" in the hands of those guys.
I think Norm has somebody behind him based purely on the fact that Doom was blasted away like that and I have not seen Marvel put out a teaser like that, which turned out to be a total lie.
I read somewhere that the whole thing with Siege will be very much an Avengers based event, and will not so much involve the X-Men at all. As a result, I don't think it will be X-Man, nor do I think it will be Scarlet Witch, as either of those turned up, then the X-Men would certainly get involved.
Could be Odin, as he is a sneaky bugger and I can see him pretending to aid Norman Osborn before turning on him in the last moment and kicking his &@*!, when Norman has arrayed himself fully against Asgard he will be vulnerable from an attack from within.
Molecule Man has just turned up in DA and Osborn didn't look like Owen was on his side at all. Mephisto is a possibillity, as he did the whole thing with Spider-Man etc. Beyonder was in the Illuminati series and most of the things which happened in that have come back in some way, so it might be him, though he was also in DA and Osborn wasn't happy about that either, though he could jsut have been a construct. Thanos is dead and that would be way out of left field, plus how would he have got hold of those infinity gems?
Personally, I reckon it will be the Void. The reason being that if anyone is good at looking like a shadowy figure, it's him, also Bendis has said that the secret ally will be revealed in December and in DA annual #1, also released in December, the Sentry's "true nature" will apparantly be revealed, which is probably the Void. If you think that picture of the flying silhouette was the secret ally, then at the end of Secret Invasion the void returned looking very much more like the Sentry only made out of shadow and completely black, like the guy in the picture.
