Even the Mighty Thor can be thunderstruck by affairs of the heart!

Marvel Studios announced today that Academy Award® nominated actress Natalie Portman has been cast to star as Jane Foster in the studio's highly anticipated movie "Thor."

In the early "Thor" comics, Jane Foster was a nurse who became Thor's first love. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation.

Portman will star opposite Chris Hemsworth who will play Thor and Tom Hiddleston who will play the villain Loki. Kenneth Branagh will direct the film.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce "Thor." Principal photography for the film is set for early 2010. The film will be released in the US on May 20, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of super hero: "Thor." This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Portman will next be seen starring in Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire. She recently wrapped production on "Hesher," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and executive produced by her production company handsomecharlie films, and Don Roos' "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits," which also she executive produced. In 2004, she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress as well as an Academy Award nomination in the same category for "Closer." She also earned critical acclaim for her role in "Garden State" and is most well known for her role as Queen Padme Amidala in the "Star Wars" Trilogy. Other film credits include "The Other Boleyn Girl," "V for Vendetta," "Cold Mountain," "Anywhere But Here," "Heat," "Beautiful Girls" and "The Professional."

"Thor" is one of a continuing slate of films being produced by Marvel Studios based on the Marvel characters, including "Iron Man 2" on May 7, 2010, "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011, and "The Avengers" on May 4, 2012.

What a great choice. Portman is both extremely beautiful and extremely talented.

Why does she look so much like Keira Knightley in this photo? It doesn't look like Portman at all. Did Marvel just pull some random photo off the Net and say it's her? Or were they provided this pic from a rep? Because that looks a LOT like Knightley.

**EDIT** Nevermind, I compared the mole on the cheek, guess it's her. Wow, she could be Keira's twin in that pic.

I have to say, the news about the new Thor movie collide....

on one hand, we hear it will be 100% Asgard and without Donald Blake... now we hear this about Jane Foster

I guess Blake will be in it after all...?

she really doesnt look that much like keira Knightly. She has similar coloured hair and is beautiful. Some superficial similarities compounded buy the fact that this is a standard head shot which all actors and actresses do.

As far as I was aware this movie was always going to feature Donald Blake because the story has been that Thor gets sent to live on earth, for as long as there have been official posts about the story.

It would be foolish of Marvel not to include a human element otherwise it stops being a superhero story and becomes a fantasy LOTR type film (in the eyes of the general public). [/quote]

When you factor in Iron Man and Incredable Hulk (the only movies Marvel has created independantly so far) one would imagine that Tor would be at least good, if not great. I just hope it's not like Wolverine, that sucked.

Its nice to know that she will be the girl in thor, but chris hemmeth?? as thor??
come on people look at him..he is small and scrawny! now look at thor..thor is big and muscular! put two and two together. the only reason that they are using this loser is because of his face!

Thor is more than a pretty face, thor is muscle and might...and MAN!! They are better off using Triple H if you want my opiniom! Come on Just compare the two...thor uses a hammer, triple h uses a hammer, thor has LONG golden hair, triple h has long golden hair, thor is muscular, triple h is muscular...come on people think!! Chris hemmeth is to small and to pretty for the role, let a real man be in the movie! Magneto
