One Word.

I've been thinking about this for a while. Reading the X men all these years and something been missing or lost for me in the latest story lines.

Best word I can think of is the "Theme" for the whole X men story since the beginning is missing. Doesn't matter which book.

So the reason for this thread is:

In one word whats missing for you?

or if nothing is missing, what do you think the "theme" or "message" is or should be??

I won't put my answer on yet. I just wanna see what other ppl say.
I don't want to influence anyone.

"Family".

That was deliberately abandoned by editorial mandate, "The X-men should not be a family, they need to be a mutant army and Cyclops is their general!"

In doing so, they cut the emotional heart out of the X-Men stories. I read these stories now and I just don't care as much as I used to. Without the characterization and the emotionally close, family-like, interactions between the characters, they gave up one of the biggest factors that drew fans in the first place.

Another factor that has gone missing is "Fun".

Either a brief adventure that was fun to read, like the Asgard Adventure, or one of the baseball game issues, there is no fun in these comics anymore.

Light

Every thing about the X-books and Marvel at large has become so dark, heavy, unoriginal and hopeless. There is nothing enlightening about these books anymore for me. I just hang on because I adore so many of these unique characters. But it's painful to have to endure the constant brain damage and heart break i feel with so many stories. Who knows how soon things will take a change for the positive, but i hope it is next year with the possible return of the original X-woman, a true symbol of hope.
But the writer really need to turn on their lightbulbs and come up with much brighter ideas.

I want a new and more enlightened Illuminati that will really change things for the better. Marvel writers please think about it!

I totally agree with you! These dark new stories are just boring for me. In the old days things looked brighter and better. I hope they will bring them back somehow.

At risk of sounding like an obsessed fangirl, I'd say, "Nightcrawler."

He represents everything that has made the X-Men what they should be- family, The Dream, light, heroic, fun. He's been described as the heart and the moral compass of the team, which of course means that in these dark, morally ambiguous misadventures of Mags Jr.- I mean Cyclops- and his "army," Nightcrawler is completely ignored.

We can't have a moral compass around when the supposed "good guys" are employing unnecessarily rough interrogation procedures or practicing racial separatism.

Agreed 100%.

All of my favorite issues of X-Men not a single optic blast is shot, claws never go "snikt", not even a punch is thrown. It's character interaction and growing. I miss that.

"Consistency". I feel like every new issue there are new rules. Not to mention everybody behaving out of character.

"Nothing"

Either than some quality writing for one or two of the X-Books I think there is little missing. Just look. You may have to look in some Totally irregular places but I think all things said can be found in Most of the current X-Books..
