X-Men: The Uncanny Fantomex

Matt Fraction brings Fantomex back into the fold with UNCANNY X-MEN #521

By Marc Strom

The mysterious and elusive Fantomex reunites with some old friends in UNCANNY X-MEN #521 on February 17, helping Wolverine, Psylocke and Colossus to track down some of the team's enemies. For writer Matt Fraction, who will pull Fantomex back into the X-Men's lives along with artist Greg Land, a number of things sealed his decision to bring the character into UNCANNY X-MEN.

"The costume, the attitude, the style, the fake French accent, the spaceship he keeps in his mouth-what isn't it about Fantomex's character that draws me to him?" asks the writer.

Aside from an appearance in DARK REIGN: THE LIST - WOLVERINE, fans haven't seen much of Fantomex in a few years, but that doesn't mean he hasn't kept busy.

"He's been working like a one-man A-Team on behalf of the lost and forgotten mutants of New York City," reveals Fraction. "Like the Equalizer, but with cool guns and a mouth-spaceship."

Like many others, Fantomex has recently fallen in with the X-Men for more ideological reasons.

"I think he's found a like-minded tribe," comments Fraction. "That's been a common thread in Nation X that's apparent by now. All of the adds we've had during Nation X don't exactly 'join' the team, but rather, find their home amongst the X-Men and associate or [become] associated with them. These are confederacies of the alike rather than anything so strictly formal."

Despite his association with the group, Fantomex still maintains a degree of distance from the X-Men and mutantkind in general.

"[He's] the outsider's outsider," remarks Fraction. "The king of the freak-loners. He's found, in spite of it all, an affiliation that resonates, the opportunity to be something more than sole monarch over the isolated empire of his own life."

Following his involvement in the current Nation X storyline, Fraction confirms that Fantomex will stick around UNCANNY X-MEN, saying only that he will play a "wily" role in the future.

And speaking of the future, Fraction would only let loose two words and a warning regarding where the series will head next:

"Kitty. Hope. Hang on."
