Unlimited Highlights: Valentine's Day

Experience the ups and downs of love with some of Marvel's biggest heroes

By Ben Chabala

Every week we'll pick a handful of awesome comics from the thousands available through Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. From creator spotlights to editor's picks and more, this'll be your spot to find something new and cool.

With Valentine's Day on the way, Cupid has flipped off the safety on that little bow of his, and to celebrate the inevitable romantic fallout we've prepped some great stories that showcase the passion and love of Marvel's greatest heroes. From a celebration of 40 years of marital bliss to teen crushes and tasteful period pieces, there's a little something for everyone.

Reed and Sue Richards, the happily married couple at the core of Marvel's First Family, the Fantastic Four, decide to give themselves a night on the town. What follows can only be described as a surreal trip down memory lane as the Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman of today meet their past and future selves to celebrate a very special occasion. Bear witness to the events that have shaped and molded the love of Reed and Sue Richards throughout their amazing lives together, for now and forever, as the heart of the Fantastic Four.

Looking for love in all the wrong places? Find yourself pining for a hyper-kinetic super hero reality TV star? If so, you’ve got a lot in common with Squirrel Girl, a member of the Great Lakes Aveng...er...X-Men who once took down Doctor Doom. The love-struck heroine’s head over tail for Speedball, the teen dream of the New Warriors, but how will she get her darling to notice her? Meanwhile, back in New York City, another young super couple's love seems to be on the rocks. Justice and Firestar can’t seem to get their wedding planning off the ground. Then again, he’s 22, she’s 19, and now they're both having doubts. Does love really conquer all?

Ever thought about re-writing some of the old Marvel romance mags with snarky banter and pop culture references? Well hold on to your horses because Marvel beat you to the punch! We’ve taken some of the snappiest stories from the 1950’s, dusted them off, and made them relevant for the love-struck youth of today. Whether they be tales of passion between a young witch and a diner demon, a card shop owner and a former child star, or a rich socialite and her money, there’s a lesson about love lurking between the lines of every sharp-witted story.

DAREDEVIL #94 (1998)
Anyone that loves a super-powered crime fighter can tell you it's hard. Enter Milla Donovan, the wife of Matt Murdock, and thus his alter ego Daredevil. She never expected that the life she chose to share with the blind lawyer of her dreams would come with so many challenges. She knows that every night the man that she loves throws himself into harm's way when she just wants him back in her arms safe and sound. But when the screams of Hell's Kitchen reach the ears of Matt Murdock she knows he'll be there to help, and she'll be left alone.

Only Peter Parker could make being adored by three gorgeous women seem worse than going toe-to-toe with the Sinister Six. Sure, one of them might be a tad crazy and another could be his ex, but still! As Spider-Man, the distraught young hero tells his woeful tale to a recently captured purse snatcher and his luck strangely starts to go bad. Can you guess why? Maybe it's because there's one more woman in Parker's life and this one has nine lives. That's right, it's the return of the Black Cat, and Peter Parker's life just got a lot more complicated.

So spidey's one night stand with the black cat is suppose to be Valentine's Day. that is the dumbest thing i've ever seen

I see we've gone with the "Spidey and Black Cat decide to be friends with benefits" instead of "Spidey gets married" ....because that's what makes me think of love and Valentine's Day.
