By Ben Chabala

This week, to prep you for the his upcoming solo limited series, NEW AVENGERS: LUKE CAGE, we're assailing your senses with the one-time Power Man! Discover Luke's humble origins within the confines of Seagate Prison, witness his rise to super heroic celebrity as a New Avenger, and see just what happens to the people foolish enough to mess with his family.

Unjustly imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, beaten and tortured for standing tall, and experimented on in a bid to gain his freedom: welcome to the life and times of Luke Cage. Growing up on the mean streets of Harlem, Luke and his best friend Willis never thought about their lives as petty criminals until Luke saw how it affected his family. Unfortunately, Willis sank deeper nto the dark depths of the criminal underworld, finally betraying his best friend and getting Luke sentenced to Seagate Prison. When Luke got offered a chance for early parole, well, what’s a little experimental chemical bath in exchange for freedom? The scalding waters transformed Luke’s body, giving him super-human strength and unbreakable skin, and thus began the career of the original Hero for Hire.

Norman Osborn has always kept a crack legal team on tenure, so that his secret Green Goblin persona stays just that: a secret. But when The Daily Bugle threatens to out his deranged alter-ego, the Goblin pays them a visit, injuring a pregnant Jessica Jones in the process. However, Norman messed with the wrong guy's girl this time, as he has to answer to Luke Cage! But there might be more to this fight than meets the eye. Sure, Luke has the Norman beat in the strength and stamina departments, but the Goblin has the market cornered on crazy!

Matt Murdock, Hell’s Kitchen’s very owned horned vigilante, needed a bodyguard. Simple assignment for Luke Cage, right? But when your client heads to The Raft, an ultra-high security prison housing some of the world’s most dangerous super villains, anything that can go wrong will. Suddenly Luke, Matt, Foggy Nelson and Jessica Drew find themselves plunged into darkness deep in the prison’s belly. When the lights flicker back to life, they come face-to-face with Carnage, Mister Hyde, Hydro Man and the combined might of nearly 50 evil powerhouses. Can someone say hazard pay?

It’s midday in New York as a pair of shiny silver legs stomp through the city streets, leaving nothing but wreckage in their wake. That can only mean one thing: Stilt Man’s back in town! Unfortunately for him, Daredevil and Luke Cage both happen to be passing by, the latter with dinner for his lady in tow. Needless to say the two heroes make short work of the third-string baddie, but before they can say their goodbyes, a huge explosion rocks the city skyline. Unfortunately, the horned hellion may have to handle the situation stag because while Luke would love to help out, hell hath no fury like a woman denied her pregnant cravings. Can Cage stick around and not get the business from Jessica?

The New Avengers divided ranks when the super hero Civil War began. Split between Captain America’s anti-registration Secret Avengers and Iron Man’s pro-registration Initiative forces, all super-powered citizens needed to pick sides and take up arms. For Luke Cage, the benefits of registration seemed glaringly obvious: a squeaky clean criminal record and a steady paycheck. So will he join Tony’s side and betray the civil liberties he has long stood for? That’s what a S.H.I.E.L.D. battalion intends to find out at midnight the night the Super Hero Registration Act becomes law. Will Luke come quietly or will he go down fighting?
