Unlimited Highlights: The Original Avengers

Witness the formation of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in this week's Unlimited Highlights!

By Ben Chabala

Every week we'll pick a handful of awesome comics from the thousands available through Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. From creator spotlights to editor's picks and more, this'll be your spot to find something new and cool.

This week, to tie-in with the release of AVENGERS: THE ORIGIN #1, Unlimited Highlights presents the very first adventures of Marvel's premiere super team! Join the gang as they battle Norse trickster gods, former allies, and even themselves on this whirlwind tour-de-force through Avengers lore!

AVENGERS #1 (1963)
Brooding in exile on the Isle of Silence, Loki, the Norse god of mischief, decides it time to stir up a little trouble for Thor and the mortals of Midgard. But while his malicious plans only intended to involve his brother and The Hulk, thanks to Rick Jones, other heroes gather and band together to subdue the Jade Giant. Soon Iron Man, Ant-Man, and The Wasp take the fight to the Green Goliath while Thor seeks the source of the mental sabotage! Will the combined might of the heroes be enough to subdue The Hulk and Loki, or will the trickster's scheming finally finish off Thor and his new friends?

AVENGERS #2 (1963)
The Avengers, Earth’s premiere super team, has been formed, but the fledging force for good can barely get through their very first meeting! As the group struggles to keep their tempers at bay, an extra-terrestrial threat enters Earth’s atmosphere intent on destroying the high-strung heroes. He calls himself The Space Phantom and he can take on the appearance of anyone he chooses, shunting them into limbo while he causes mayhem in their name. With tensions running so high already, will The Space Phantom plant the seeds of sabotage and bring down the Avengers before they’ve even properly began?

The future doesn’t look too bright for Manhattan. The Hulk’s come to town looking for the Avengers, Rick Jones, and a little revenge. He already snuffed out The Human Torch, and with the rest of the Fantastic Four incapacitated, only The Thing stands between him and millions of dollars worth of property damage. But just in the nick of time the Avengers assemble to bring down Bruce Banner’s brutish alter ego. Can the FF and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes band together to subdue the Hulk, or will the green-skinned goliath smash them all?

The newest batch of Avengers might be in trouble. Somehow, after a trip to the past, they’ve returned to a strange new future and must face the original team if they want to return home! But that’s not all: if they somehow manage to defeat their former allies they still have to deal with The Scarlet Centurion, a time-trapped tyrant who wants the Earth at any cost. Now it’s Captain America’s new squad against Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Giant-Man and Wasp in a battle that could very well change the course of history!

You may think you know how the Avengers formed, but you’ve never seen that momentous occasion quite like this! After all the smashing and bashing comes the paper work, and Iron Man’s got a ton of it for each of his new teammates. But The Hulk hates red tape, and before the Avengers' first meeting gets under way the rampaging brute blasts his way out of Tony’s mansion, declining membership. Yet just when the Avengers seem finished, a long-lost hero rises from the waves carrying a star-spangled shield and a glimmer of hope for the beleaguered super team. But will even the return of Captain America be enough to save them?

Love the Avengers, they are getting their due. I know we've seen the cross over between JLA and the Avengers but in a battle who wins or more importantly which is cooler?www.comicsninja.com
