To prep you for the Age of X, we’re highlighting some of the past 40 years’ most brilliant alternate X-Men universes. Some are post-apocalyptic, some just post-Apocalypse, and one could have jumped right out of a fairy tale. We guarantee you’ve never seen the X-Men quite like this before.
The future lies in ruins, a dystopian wasteland ruled by the mutant-hunting Sentinels’ mechanical might. Mutants lie buried alongside their allies in a massive graveyard, a reminder to those still harboring thoughts of rebellion. Yet amidst the death and destruction there remains hope for a brighter future—or rather, a different past. The last vestiges of Charles Xavier’s X-Men—Colossus, Kitty Pryde, Storm, and Wolverine—have one last chance to change the past and prevent their horrible present. All their carefully laid plans fall on Kitty’s shoulders. Does she have what it takes?
En Sabah Nur, better known as the genocidal mutant Apocalypse, controls the entirety of the United States. His armies purge the country of the weak, transforming the Land of the Free into a Darwinian nightmare governed by only one law: survival of the fittest. But as always, a small group of mutants resists his tyrannical rule—they are the X-Men, and they’re ready to fight back.
Set amongst the stars, Aliyah Bishop, daughter of Deathbird of the Shi’Ar and Bishop of the X-Men, finds herself embroiled in a conflict bigger than she could have ever imagined. Chance and happenstance have guided her to a Kree and Slaver trade off on a dead planet. The Brood makes a surprise appearance, a Warskrull opens fire on the Kree, the Slavers book it to relative safety, and Aliyah winds up waking the person in the cocoon, a mutant everyone thought long dead.
A young girl’s body washes up beneath one of New York’s many bridges. The cops leave her for the rats, just another victim of the evil X Men, outlaw killers trained at the unwitting expense of the state’s tax dollars. But Tom Halloway intends to dig deeper into this murder, to get to the bottom of Jean Grey’s death and the X Men’s dark mystery. Unfortunately he won’t like what he finds, as the city and her denizens prefer to keep their secrets close—and anyone who learns them quickly finds themselves taking a swim in concrete shoes.
Down in Louisiana, Remy LeBeau, a smooth-talking New Orleans detective runs into a pretty little thief wearing gloves and sporting unusual platinum highlights in otherwise chestnut brown hair. Also, apparently she can talk to the dead. Unfortunately her gift doesn’t go unnoticed and members of the devious, dark magic-obsessed Hellfire Club take her hostage in a bid to rule the world. Can Remy become the girl’s knight in shining armor and save New Orleans from a zombie apocalypse of epic proportions?
