Avengers Fridays

Five Favorite Avengers: Cullen Bunn

Before diving into Fear Itself: The Deep, the writer runs down his picks for Earth's Mightiest Heroes

By TJ Dietsch

“And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born—to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand!”

As the Heroic Age dawns on the Marvel Universe and we prepare for a new chapter in the ongoing saga of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, each Friday Marvel.com will present a different column focusing on the one and only Avengers. From line-ups to costumes to villains to classic stories and beyond, we’ve got you covered on the history of Marvel’s most prolific team of heroes!

So let the call go out: Avengers Assemble!

When offered the opportunity, recently announced FEAR ITSELF: THE DEEP writer Cullen Bunn jumped at the chance to talk about his favorite Avengers team members. A long time fan of the team and Marvel comics, Bunn's list comes chock full of heavy hitters and nostalgia.

5. Iron Man

“The first super hero I remember connecting with. Before I ever read the comics, I had the Mego action figure. I remember posing him a certain way when I was pretending he was flying, and when I finally read a comic featuring him, I geeked out because he was flying in the same pose. Anyway—a millionaire playboy with an ego more powerful than his suit of armor? To me, Iron Man is the foundation of the Avengers, even more so than, say, Captain America.

4. Thor

“I give Walt Simonson a lot of credit for my love of this character. His run on THOR was one of the first comics I subscribed to through a magazine subscription drive in school, and they were some of the most epic, interesting stories I had read up until that point. When I think about it, though, I was loving this character way before that, around the time of the ‘Death of Balder’ storyline in the late 70’s. Thor appeals to me because he's insanely powerful, and I love that the villains who go against the Avengers know that and quake in their boots when his name is mentioned. His Asgardian sense of honor and his antiquated speech set him apart from any of the other Avengers. It's good to have a Viking god on the team!”

3. Mockingbird

“As much as I love the really powerful characters in the Avengers, I have to give credit to Mockingbird, who can hold her own alongside the big guns. She's smart, strong, sexy, and she's got moxie! What can I say? I like secret agent characters! Also, I love her most recent costume designs!”

2. The Hulk

“I would have loved to see more of the original Hulk on the team. He was a founding member, but he never seemed to fit in. That always made him a perfect addition in my mind. He was the loose cannon, the wild card, and there was an innocence to him—a sense of wonder. And he could level a mountain with a punch.”

1. Beast & Wonder Man

“It's cheating, yeah, but these two always worked best as a team. They were kind of a super-powered Abbott and Costello—goofballs, yeah, but they got the job done. They made me feel like my best friend and I could fit right in with Earth's Mightiest Heroes.”
