Unlimited Highlights: Cosmic Avengers

Celebrate the launch of Annihilators: Earthfall with adventures pitting the heroes of Earth against extraterrestrial rivals

Every week we'll pick a handful of awesome comics from the thousands available through Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. From creator spotlights to editor's picks and more, this'll be your spot to find something new and cool.

This week, to tie-in with the explosive release ANNIHILATORS: EARTHFALL #1 and all the awesome Annihilators vs Avengers action, we’ve got five brilliant issues starring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes taking on the cosmos and saving the world!

By Ben Chabala

AVENGERS #96 (1963)

Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, The Vision, and Goliath take to the stars to rescue their teammates The Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Captain Marvel, but they’ll need to fight their way through an entire Skrull armada to do it! Dodging laser burn and rocket blasts, the heroic quintet discover the location of their comrades, but amidst the chaos and confusion the defeated Skrull contingent launch a nuclear payload at Earth. Now only Goliath, minus his giant powers, stands between the doomsday device and destruction!

The Shi’ar and the Kree, two of the universe’s most powerful cosmic kingdoms, collide in a war that threatens Earth’s sun! The Shi’ar utilize the blazing celestial pyre as a Star Gate, allowing them to cross vast distances in the blink of an eye; unfortunately each time they do they destabilize the delicate structure of the sun, inching it closer and closer to nova! To protect Earth, Captain America and the Avengers mean to bring an end to the conflict, either by diplomacy or by force of arms.

AVENGERS #7 (1998)

Again, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes clash with the alien Kree, but this time on the surface of our own moon. The Kree soldier elite, remnants of the Negabomb destruction initiated by The Supreme Intelligence, threaten to transform the human race, and with the Omni-wave broadcast transmitter they just might succeed. Unless of course the Avengers storm their hidden moon base and coax a surrender.

AVENGERS #35 (1998)

An impenetrable barrier surrounds the Sol System, trapping Earth and her sister planets within an enormous cosmic bubble. The Avengers want to know why, and Lilandra has the answers. To their horror, the heroes discover a celestial council intent to transform Earth into a prison colony for the universe’s most violent criminals. But something’s not right. Who are the Ruul? Why do they want the Avengers out of the picture? And how does the Kree Supreme Intelligence fit into all this?

Steve Rogers’ team of Avengers head to Mars to investigate the perennially shady Roxxon Corporation’s abandoned mining operation. Roxxon security forces extend an incredibly warm welcome, laser hot ambush style, to the heroes, and things only get worse from there. Ant-Man and War Machine discover a dangerous dimensional warp, Cap and Beast run into a deadly alien defender in a hidden tomb, and the rest of the gang meet up with their teammate Nova who’s gone and joined the bad guys!
