Five Favorite Avengers: Dan Abnett

The co-writer of Villains for Hire shares his Avengers crush plus four other faves

By TJ Dietsch

And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born—to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand!”

Each Friday Marvel.com will present a different column focusing on the one and only Avengers. From line-ups to costumes to villains to classic stories and beyond, we’ve got you covered on the history of Marvel’s most prolific team of heroes!

So let the call go out: Avengers Assemble!

The writing duo of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning know team books well. Currently, they’re working on NEW MUTANTS and ANNIHILATORS: EARTH FALL, with VILLAINS FOR HIRE hitting stores next week. So, you could say that they're familiar with the dynamics that come into play when it comes to putting together a solid group of characters who will work well together.

With that in mind, we tapped one half of team DnA to find out his favorite Avengers.

“My fave eras for the team are the John Buscema/Roy Thomas run, and John Byrne's tenure with Roger Stern, so my choices rather reflect that," Abnett reveals.

5. Clint Barton as Goliath

“A costume that perfectly sums up the style of the age. And, actually, Clint Barton in any guise is pretty damn cool.”

4. Clint Barton as Hawkeye

“See what I mean?”

3. The Vision

“Just awesome. Great power, great look, and incredibly sympathetic for a character so—apparently—quiet and buttoned up.”

2. Wonder Man

“So easily overlooked. I am fond of the safari suit style, but it's Byrne's version, with the belt-mounted jet-packs and the shades and the big red W [that I prefer]. Toe-to-toe with the Hulk and Thor, a serious heavyweight.”

1. The Scarlet Witch

“Again, a great idea for a power—more chaos math than magic—and a genuinely strong female character in such a male dominated environment. I confess I was a little bit in love with Wanda.”
