Avengers VS X-Men

SDCC 2012: A-Babies Vs. X-Babies

Skottie Young brings the Avengers Vs. X-Men conflict to another arena, featuring infant versions of the characters!

By Jim Beard

Creator Skottie Young takes a break from the Land of Oz this October to bring Marvel’s favorite infant heroes together in A-BABIES VS. X-BABIES #1. Spinning off from the Avengers Vs. X-Men event, the one-shot promises an epic clash between toddler versions of Marvel’s greatest characters.

Listen, don't be surprised if this isn't the AvX event people talk about in 20 years,” notes Young. “I'm writing and not drawing this one. With the Oz books, I just go to the table each day and see what kind of wacky world I can build. This is playing with toys that people love but making them super cute and cuddly, except when they're blasting each other with mutant powers.

“Baby Magneto will definitely mess some toddlers up. And I think the Baby Hulk will be smashing a few things.”

Young’s very clear on his inspiration for the motivations behind the scenes of A-BABIES VS. X-BABIES, but perhaps less forthcoming as to more exact plot points in the book.

“I have a two and a half-year old,” he explains. He thinks the funniest thing in the world is pestering and inflicting pain on others. Nothing makes him laugh harder than someone saying "owww!” So, in true toddler fashion, one baby will pester another until it’s on!”

Above and beyond all the smashing and crashing—and diapers—one aspect of the project stands out in his mind as its greatest creative draw for Young.

Playing with humor,” he says. “I've been lucky down the years to be one of the go-to artists whenever an editor wants something with a comedic slant. I love playing with humor and this is perfect project do that with.”

A-BABIES VS. X-BABIES also boasts the talents of Guruhiru, responsible for the unique art styling of WOLVERINE AND POWER PACK, THOR AND THE WARRIORS FOUR and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIGHTING AVENGER.

“He's got a great sense of movement and energy,” Young notes. “I feel comfortable writing the craziest things with these babies because I know I don't have to draw it and he does, and I couldn't be more excited to see him bring it to life.”
