Mobilizing the Avengers

Marvel Custom Solutions joins with T-Mobile for an original Avengers adventure featuring Thanos!

By Tim Stevens

Marvel Custom Solutions and T-Mobile team up to chronicle the rivalry between the Avengers and Thanos in the new AVENGERS: THREAT ASSESSMENT comic.  This digital comic book is free to new and existing T-Mobile customers with a purchase of a Samsung Galaxy S® III or Samsung Galaxy Note® II from T-Mobile.  Download codes are available through T-Mobile retail locations and are available while supplies last.  The story, by writer Christos Gage and artists Michael Ryan and Fernando Blanco, provides a way into the world of the Avengers for fans of the movie while also revisiting classic storylines for established readers.

“Featuring 10 all-new pages of awesome art, a stunning cover by Jorge Molina, plus a five-page ‘making of’ section, this digital comic is a great example of how Marvel Custom Solutions can craft stories that appeal to both existing longtime readers and the new-to-comics-from-the movies audience,” says editor Bill Rosemann.

“The intention behind the comic is for someone who had only seen the Avengers movie, and wants to know more about Thanos, to be able to read this story and come away with an understanding of the great danger he presents, and the epic battles that the Avengers have fought against him,” explains writer Christos Gage.

“Our goal here was to not only wow readers with amazing visuals, but also give them easy to understand insight into why Thanos is such a threat, and also such a compelling character,” Rosemann continues. “Artist Michael Ryan gives you a guided tour through several decades of destruction, with Fernando Blanco drawing the two-page bookend scene featuring a Marvel NOW!-set meeting between Nick Fury and Captain America discussing our cosmic conqueror.”

That latter promise should hold particular interest for the more dedicated Marvel fan as the current Fury and Captain America have shared little by way of panel time to date meaning this story stands as a key moment in their evolving relationship.

“They respect each other as American soldiers,” Gage states. “They see a kinship, they understand each other. Still, they're not blindly trusting of each other. Cap is a little wary of what Fury might do once he realizes the extent of the threat Thanos poses, and Fury wants to be sure he has the full story; it's his job to be ready for anything.”

When it came to choosing what classic tales to make sure to include, the choices seemed clear from the start to Gage.

“The conflict that occurred primarily in the pages of CAPTAIN MARVEL and AVENGERS #125 had to be there, as it was the first salvo in the Avengers/Thanos war,” he notes. “The battle that culminated in AVENGERS ANNUAL #7 and MARVEL TWO-IN ONE ANNUAL #2 was Thanos' first taste of the power of the Infinity Gems, and an acknowledged classic of comic art.

THE INFINITY GAUNTLET? Please. Of course that got in, it's the closest Thanos has come to winning; the moment he finally attained ultimate power, only to be brought low by his own hubris.”

The writer also wanted to give the present some weight so fans could know where the villain stood in current continuity and it allowed him to perhaps put some other heroes who will soon be very important on the maps of casual readers:

“The most recent confrontation in AVENGERS ASSEMBLE, along with being fresh in the Avengers' memory, is notable for the participation of the Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Rosemann, for one, could not be happier will how the writer has brought the book together.

“Not only is Christos’s knowledge of Marvel continuity stellar, but he knows how to use it to tell new, accessible stories,” Rosemann says. “Christos is a master at zeroing in on key moments to re-examine and weave together new layers of characterization. He’s uniquely skilled in using continuity not as a roadblock, but instead as stepping stones to pave the way forward.”

“It was a matter of choosing the right elements to focus on,” the writer concludes. “I thought back to my first encounters with Marvel comics, as a kid just discovering them for the first time. The way the stories were written, reference was made to past events and it was clear these characters had a history, but the reader was given all the information they needed to know to follow the story in the comic itself.

“I remember that I was never confused as to what was going on, but the allusions to the rich backstory of the Marvel universe made me want to find out more. The idea was to convey the basics: the nature of the conflict, what it said about Thanos, what it meant for the rest of the Marvel Universe, and hopefully make people want to find out more by reading the original stories.”
