Fans will get a chance to properly meet Marvel's newest star, Hitman Monkey, in a special two-part Marvel Digital Comics Exclusive beginning this December, courtesy of writer Daniel Way and artist Dalibor Talijic, all wrapped in a gorgeous Frank Cho cover. This will mark the historic first time a character has debuted through Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited.

"Hitman Monkey is a soulful, tortured, jazz-loving 30-pound engine of destruction," explains Executive Editor Axel Alonso. "Think Chow Yun Fat from 'The Killer' as a monkey. To be specific, [a Japanese Macaque] monkey."

The character's origin will incorporate a number of different elements, ranging from the comedic to the dramatic.

"Let's be clear: HITMAN MONKEY is the harrowing tale of a Macaque monkey from the mountains of Japan who, though fate and circumstance, is transformed into the world's deadliest assassin," Alonso continues. "I fail to see what could be funny about-oh. I see your point."

When asked how he feels Hitman Monkey's appearance in a Marvel Digital Comics Exclusive will help build anticipation for the character's appearance in February's DEADPOOL #20, Alonso sees at least one simple reason:

DEADPOOL #20

"The fact that our protagonist is a monkey won't hurt."

Going back to the character's genesis, Alonso re-enacts a conversation he had with writer/creator Daniel Way on Hitman Monkey's design.

"Daniel Way [said] 'I'm thinking Spider-Monkey,' [and I responded] 'In a sharply-tailored black suit?' [He said] 'Yep.' Frank Cho added the gloves and colorist Jason Keith added the red tie. It's a wrap."

Once Hitman Monkey does make his way into the pages of the Merc With a Mouth's own book, Alonso promises that "Deadpool and Spider-Man will never know what hit 'em. Hitman Monkey is a skilled martial artist and crack shot, plus he's got mad hops. He is really good at what he does-one might even venture to say, he's the best there is at what he-Wait."

Looking towards the future, Alonso also expects big things from Hitman Monkey in the coming year.

"Headline from San Diego Comic-Con 2010: Hitman Monkey sweeps Eisner Awards!!!"

Marvel is a little "Johnny come lately" on Hitman Monkey. My self-published comic about a gun toting monkey, Banana Panic, has been out on iPhone for months. and it's free to boot! http://www.bananapanic.com

welcome to the boards, twomonkeys.Maybe Marvel was reading Cry For Justice and took James Robinson's words seriously. They must think Apes are "it" now.

As long as he has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Marvel Apes, then everything shouild be peachy.

I don't even know what to think of this new ape? I'll be fair and give it a crack when it hits the digital comics.

And the thing is being written by the man who brought us the 2004 Venom series and Wolverine Origins. Think that'll give you some level of the quality we'll be expecting. Then on the other hand the guy also currently writes Deadpool very well, but then if the character in question is almost exactly the same but is a monkey.I'd add Gorilla Girl to the list of Primate Super Characters we already have, ignoring the umpteen Marvel Apes series we've had in the past two years or so.But whos the champ has a point. I'll reserve final judgement till the Digital Comics deubt. I was wrong about Anti-Venom after all.

This is what happens when you have you many male staff members.

I hope he slings poo instead of using guns that would be more intersting and I hope his suit is "hell-OOO Dolche and Gabbana. He is a kung fu panda loving shrek hating ninja assassin of the matrix who gets dragged to hell with elmo in a underground fight club. He will also be in the movie The Bucket List 2 : The End of all bad Ideas

you know people are only going to read something that has a great looking design to the covers or characters that are interesting. I guess that disney must have come up with this character. I can only wait to see tim allen play the Shaggy Kung Fu Monkey Hitman.

[quote@GundamAce so they can put that time and energy into making better characters maybe
And I could understand that argument if you'd have read the title first...But seriously... You've already decided on your opinion from one picture and a description?

Sometimes I am amazed at the ability comic fans have to turn a (possibly) fun character or series into some pariah based solely on speculation and NOT on having first-hand experience of READING IT.Had most of you been with internet in the 80s, I have to wonder.. would you have tried to block/undo the symbiote? How many legendary or fun characters today would have ceased to exist back in the day with the internet around?I personally think the "hit-monkey" character has potential to go either way. Short of a ninja, who can compete with a monkey's agility? And how many monkey characters can you really name? Is 5 - 10 in 616 REALLY too much? When I make a list I get:1, 2 &3 Red ghost's Super Apes4 - Ken from Agents of Atlas... Any more?Other than Ken, are any of these characters really PREVALENT in comics today?AND -- Did anyone FORCE you to read Marvel Apes? Because I know I didnt have that treatment.Think something looks Crap?Dont buy it! Heck, don't READ it.But why trash it BEFORE IT DEBUTS!?!

This is looking to be the best new character introduction to the Marvel universe since Speedball! And we all know how rollicking and awesome Speedball was!

Wow. I mean... just wow. There are no words to describe the Naffness of this so-called AWESOME new character. Not only is it highly unoriginal... with Marvel Apes, was this character even needed? You guys have somehow gone monkey and zombie mad between Merc with A Mouth (which at least is readable) and the umpteen Marvel Zombies and Marvel Apes series.Marvel, in the name of all that is good and holy (though after One More Day I hardly think that's on anyone's mind) PLEASE stop with the Marvel Apes and the Marvel Zombies. It's not even unoriginal any more. It's bland, bottom of the barrel stuff.I'm prepared to hold off truly judging the character till he appears on Marvel Digital, but if this is the awesome kind of stuff I get for being a subcriber, I can't honestly see the point. And I don't wanna hear that the next character you make is Crocodile Dundee - the joke that he happens to be an Aussie Cracking Half Human Half Crocodile with a chainsaw on one hand and- no wait, I'm not giving you any more ideas, make your own Marvel!Otherwise it might as well be the 90's again. That was fun for you guys right?

Isn't this all kinds of copyright infringing? The same suit as Hitman from the video games, and the same whole thing as the Hitman Monkey pictures.Cheap.What's next, LOLcat?
