By Marc Strom Superstar artist Gabriele Dell'Otto, best known for his painted artwork in the SECRET WAR limited series his work as a cover artist on series like ANNIHILATION, has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Comics. Dell'Otto tells us he chose to go with Marvel for one simple reason. "They asked me," he confesses. "Probably I'm getting old!" His first project as an interior artist under the new deal will be the upcoming X-FORCE: SEX & VIOLENCE limited series with writers Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost. And for Dell'Otto, choosing this project proved a no-brainer. "Wolverine with a black costume, lots of blood and a sexy girl, all in one comic—what more could you ask for?!"

John Barber, editor of SEX & VIOLENCE, says that Dell'Otto's skills make him one of the more unique artists working in comics today. "Gabriele's a hell of a draughtsman," Barber points out. "He can draw anything and make it seem real. And he's a hell of a painter. His paintings are astonishingly, beautifully accomplished. And those two things don't always fit together—there are a lot of painters who don't have the basic penciling skills of Gabriele, and a lot of pencilers who paint without the technical virtuosity of Gab. "But to me, that's not what makes Gab, Gab. To me, what makes him who he is is a combination of that pure skill and the powerful emotion that goes into his paintings. Gab's art isn't sterile and logical—it's vivid and alive and makes you feel like you're right there with the characters." Barber points to Dell'Otto's newest work as an example of what makes the artist so compelling. "Gabriele just thinks about these things differently," the editor says. "There's an easy, normal way to do something, and there's Gab's way. And Gab's way is cooler. Look at that cover for X-FORCE: SEX & VIOLENCE. Look how he frames it, what we see in reflection, the muted colors except for the burst of red—fantastic." Barber explains that all of the above reasons made Dell'Otto a great fit for SEX AND VIOLENCE.

"Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost have put together a perfect story for Gab to draw," Barber proclaims. "Craig and Chris' story, when they pitched it to me on the phone, was just fantastic. It's fun and absurd and dark and over-the-top. I mean, they titled it SEX AND VIOLENCE for God's sake. It's bravura pulp entertainment for the twenty-first century. "That raw emotion I talked about in Gab's art—SEX AND VIOLENCE is all about raw emotion. That's what makes Gab the perfect fit for this story." Besides the three-issue X-Force series, Dell'Otto tells us he has a number of other projects on his plate. "I'm working on covers for DAREDEVIL and WOLVERINE as well as creating a one-shot for the French market," the artist reveals. Finally, Dell'Otto told us two Marvel characters he would most like to get his hand on sometime in the future: "Hulk and Daredevil!"
