Hey, kids! Eric Mattias' name may not be on Magneto's radar but as a student enrolled at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, he observes the fabled institution from a unique set of eyes. While other mutants are off saving the day or training to make X-Man, Eric ostracizes himself from his peers for his insecurity over his uncool power. He spends his time on the computer, reflecting about the world around him, while trying to cope with having "the world's suckiest mutant power." You want to know what his power is, don't you? Well, in order to get all the details, you'll have to pick up Eric's book "Wolverine: Worst Day Ever" (written by his real world counterpart, Barry Lyga and due in stores everywhere April 22)! Luckily, we've gotten hold of Eric's journal! We'll post two entries per week sure to shed insight into the life and world of Eric Mattias—look for them on Tuesdays and Thursdays on Marvel.com. The sooner we understand how mutants socially interact, the sooner our societies can peacefully coexist.
Story of My Life This entry posted on May 1 at 5:04:58 pm by Eric. I used to have a pretty good life. I had a lot of friends. I wasn't the most popular kid in school, but everyone knew me and most of them liked me. There was a girl — Emily Hardy — that I liked and sometimes at lunch she would look over at my table and then look away quickly. Not a bad life. Not bad at all. And then the power developed and everything started to suck with the power of a thousand vacuum cleaners all running at once: VRROOOOOOOMMM! My first week here at the school did not go well. First of all, I didn't realize how big a deal privacy was here. The school is huge, OK? Like, it's bigger than my middle school, and that's not even counting all the special X-Men rooms and junk like that hidden deep underground. So, I get dropped into this huge school with all these new people… Well, what would you do? I explored. I was still getting used to my power. It didn't occur to me that people couldn't or wouldn't see me when I went into their rooms or hung out around them. I wanted to be a part of the gang, wanted to be with the kids my age. So I would find a group and stick with them. I would chime in occasionally and no one would respond, so I just figured they were ignoring the new kid. I stuck with it, hanging around, listening. I guess I didn't really think it through. I didn't make the connection: People didn't know I was around, so they thought they were having private conversations. And just because I could walk into someone's room and look around without them telling me to get out didn't mean they were OK with it. It's just that they didn't realize I'd come in. Eventually, Professor X figured out what was going on. And that's when I got my first big lecture on Power and Responsibility. (I swear he speaks in capital letters…) Not the best start to my days at Xavier's School for Gifted Freaks— Er, Students. The only cool thing, of course, is that I'm living in the same building as the X-Men. That's way cool. They're like the superstars of the mutant world, the mutants other mutants aspire to be. In case you've been living on the moon or in the Negative Zone for last million years, here's the deal on the X-Men:

Cyclops He's the team leader. Shoots energy beams out of his eyes. He's the one person I'm glad doesn't look my way!

Storm Controls the weather. How cool is that?

Colossus Big, strong dude who turns into big, strong steel dude.

Iceman Come on; do I really have to explain this one to you?

Angel He can fly. He can fly!!!!!

Marvel Girl Telekinesis. In case you were sick the day they taught basic science fiction in grade school, that means she can move stuff with her mind.

I drew this
instead of
doing my
homework
last night.
I wish I
could fly.
Doesn't it
look like fun?

And then there's Wolverine. More about him later.
