UPDATED, 11/19/10 with video of Spider-Man, NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg, Marvel EIC/CCO Joe Quesada and more:

If you picked up a copy of the New York Daily News today, maybe you spotted something a bit different inside—a free Marvel Comic! That’s right: a certain web-slinging wonder’s there to greet you in between the pages and it’s all in the name of public service.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: YOU’RE HIRED, available free in the Wednesday, November 17 edition of the Daily News, can also be downloaded onto your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad using the Marvel App. Did we mention it’s free?

This one-of-a-kind comic’s story spotlights the range of New York City’s public employment services by using Spidey’s alter-ego Peter Parker, the world’s most prolific jobseeker, as an example of how to use the city’s all-important Workforce1 system and boasts the creative team of writer Warren Simons and artist Todd Nauck with a cover by Phil Jimenez.

“It was a real pleasure from start to finish,” says Simons. Having the opportunity to write Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Vulture and Mayor Bloomberg and discuss New York City's Workforce1 services all in the span of eight pages was a lot of fun. As Mayor Bloomberg notes in the issue, Spider-Man truly is a New York icon. Tony Stark's a billionaire and Thor's a mythological being, but Peter Parker's a guy who's trying to pay his rent every month, like a lot of New Yorkers. Using his job hunt as an opportunity to shine a light on Workforce1 and the career services NYC offers was a natural fit.

“I run the website UnbeatableResumes.com, so I have a strong professional connection to career services, and I wanted to give readers some job-hunting tips that had applications in the real world. Editor Steve Wacker and I visited the Workforce1 center in Queens and saw firsthand the amazing services that are offered there; that was a great experience. It was also really enjoyable to work with Todd Nauck, who beautifully illustrated a panel-heavy script and did a lovely job with the storytelling.”

“It can be a fun challenge to bring a real person into the comic book world and interpret them in my art style,” reports Nauck—who famously depicted President Barack Obama in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #583—on illustrating NYC’s mayor. “It was fun to create the visuals for Electrosaurus and draw the classic Spidey villain, the Vulture. We got to do a lot in just eight pages!

“I am completely honored to be chosen once again for a high profile project like this.

I enjoy these one-of-kind stories. They reach beyond comic fans to an audience that doesn't necessarily read comics regularly if at all.”

And remember, it’s not just New Yorkers who can enjoy the special-edition comic; Marvelites across the globe can download the free story with the Marvel App. Get yours now!
