Coming in April 2011, mounting paranoia and anger will force the Marvel Universe to face its biggest foe yet: Fear Itself.

Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada along with VP – Executive Editors Tom Brevoort and Axel Alonso gathered at Midtown Comics on December 21 to address fans about their upcoming plans for 2011. After a week’s worth of teasers and speculation, the trio announced Fear Itself, a brand new mega comics event.

“It's undeniable that there's a certain something in the air right now,” said Quesada. “Tapping into that is what we do at Marvel and it brings out the best in our creators. But it's all through the eyes and stories of our heroes.”

Anchored by a seven-issue limited series, Fear Itself will involve the entire Marvel Universe—but who will be the eight most worthy?

Weaving this web of anguish and trepidation wills a superstar line-up of Marvel creators headlined by writer Matt Fraction and artist Stuart Immonen along with inker Wade Von Grawbadger and colorist Laura Martin on the core series.

“Like the best of all Marvel stuff, it’s something that speaks to the world we live in,” said Fraction of the story. “Everyone is afraid of something right now.”

In addition to the central limited series, Fear Itself will be supplemented by other event-specific limited series and specials as well as ancillary tie-ins in ongoing titles that will exist as their own standalone stories.

The action starts up in March 2011 with a prologue written by Ed Brubaker with art by Scot Eaton. Set during World War II, the story revolves around Captain America and the Invaders doing battle with the Red Skull. Deep in the history of the Marvel Universe, a secret lurks that unlocks the first key to Fear Itself.

“Fear, above all else, is a great motivator,” said Quesada. “There's no shortage of charlatans, tyrants or despots ready to stoke the flames. All they need is a spark.”

Just as long as this is more of a moralistic story and not political. Too many of Marvel's stories of late seem to push a certain political view as right and another as evil. Leave the politics alone and focus on more simple, moralistic stories.

I'm really hoping this revolves around Phobos... since his dad's dead and we're not sure how he's handling it, it would be a great move to bring him to the forefront and really turn things upside down...

i dont think it is just a matter of making it dark or light good or evil when you are trying to make a compelling story you need to have depth and reliability there has to be things that make you stop for a second and question these characters just because there superhuman does not mean they are immune to bad judgment or deceit we all make mistakes even super humans and as hard as it is we have to live with these mistakes and hopefully we learn from them

fear it's self deserves some above teen+ ratings. Personally I don't want to see our heroes suffer again but I want it to be done to look real, old school action sequence (recently drawn). And the go back to heroic age to make them winners again. I hate to see our favorites struggling without a good story.

i love dark reign too but i hate secret invasion and secret war, if they make it dark like dark reign, then im happy :) but please marvel don't change the entire marvel universe, maybe just a little bit, but not the *@@$ like one more day, just keep it in the heroic age.

Is it me, or does this story sound too much like it belongs in a small Green lantern comic rather than as a marvel big summer blockbuster

Pretty exciting, I love Universe wide events, I love it when the whole Marvel Universe comes together to fight a greater evil. I loved Dark Reign. Bigger heroes come out of times when things are tough.

No offense but the artwork on the Spider-Man teaser is not that bad and it was probably made by Immonen who drew the others probably also so be quiet.

"Pretty much anybody you can think of in the Marvel U will be touched in some way by Fear Itself."Oh yeah, what are the odds that Alpha Flight will be involved? As for the question: Is Marvel going back in the dark so soon after starting the Heroic Age? I think you guys misunderstood what was being asked. No one expects the heroes to stroll through golden fields while easily defeating the bad guys, what we want to know is: will the heroes act like heroes or will they compromise their ethics as they did in Civil War? Will they do the right thing even if it means taking the more difficult route, or will they resort to villainous tactics because it's easier and more expedient? To put it bluntly will they be good guys?

Marvel shouldn't be called the "House of Ideas" but the "House of Gimmicks." What happened to the good old days when you sold comics by telling a good story?! Instead they have these broad sweeping "everything changes!!" events that really aren't felt for more than 2 months before the next "MEGA EVENT!!!" is on. It's really turning off fans and making it hard for new ones to care about anything that happens, because they know in 6 issues it will be different again. Wise up Marvel and get back to basics!!

      Bontenou
      Bontenou

They are going to take more characters, and screw them up even MORE, with some half assed concept...Marvel needs to really just sit down and have A Q&A with it's hardcore fans and HEED to what's stated because at this rate i'm about to stop buying marvel comics altogether.

I feel like we're still dealing with the last event that "changed everything". Gimme a break. I like the team behind the book, so I'm sure I'll pick it up, but based off this announement, I'm not that excited about it yet. Just the mention of Dracula is enough to turn me off of this thing. We'll see I guess.
