The Marvel Comics App on the iPad

***Check out the video walk through of the Marvel iPad app on Apple.com!***

Marvel Entertainment is proud to announce the launch of the Marvel Comics App for iPad on the App Store. This landmark app launches with over 500 of Marvel's greatest comic books, from classic stories to modern tales, featuring Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk, Thor and more of the world's most popular Super Heroes. The Marvel Comics App brings the world of Marvel to iPad owners with each comic presented at incredibly high resolution on iPad's full color screen, a user-friendly search engine, innovative viewing options and more.

"We're excited to introduce an unparalleled digital comic experience to our fans with the Marvel Comics App for iPad," said Dan Buckley, publisher & CEO, Marvel Publishing. "The iPad is the first device that offers us a chance to present digital comics that are even close to replicating the experience of reading a print comic. This new world of digital comics distribution provides us great opportunities to reach new readers, allow consumers to sample our diverse stories and characters, and we believe it will drive these new fans into the App Store and local comic shops each week to find even more."

The Marvel Comics App on the iPad
Fans will be granted unrivaled access to Marvel's rich library of comics, with launch titles ranging from the first appearances of characters such as Spider-Man and the X-Men to modern classics like the debut of Red Hulk, Jonathan Hickman's acclaimed FANTASTIC FOUR run, Joss Whedon & John Cassaday's ASTONISHING X-MEN and lots more. Every comic available through the Marvel Comics App is optimized for the iPad through painstaking re-coloring and re-digitizing of select content.

Marvel worked with ComiXology to create the perfect app for new readers, offering the option to preview two pages from each available comic before purchasing and a cutting edge recommendation engine for every fan to find a comic they're sure to love. The app also arms fans with a handy comic shop locator, allowing them to find their local retailer's address and phone number and then journey even further into the Marvel Universe. To enhance the mobile reading experience on the iPad even more, the Marvel Comics App features multiple viewing modes, taking readers panel-by-panel through the comic book in a smooth, action-packed progression using just the swipe of a finger.

The Marvel Comics App on the iPad
"As Marvel's digital comics program has developed over the last few years, we've focused on delivering the best possible consumer experience across different services and devices," said Ira Rubenstein, Executive Vice President, Marvel Global Digital Media Group. "We're confident that the iPad is one of the best ways to read Marvel digital comics from anywhere, at any time.  Since the iPad was announced, we have heard from our Marvel fans that this is the device they really wanted to see our comics on. This is just another step in the evolution of Marvel Digital Comics.  We hope you love it as much as we do and we will continue to make the consumer experience even better."

The Marvel Comics App for iPad is available for free from the App Store on iPad or at www.itunes.com/appstore. Individual comics are priced at just $1.99 each with new content arriving every week.

I love the app...in truth I spend a lot each Tuesday. I enjoy the updates, but I have one small request. When there is a story arch...could you please please allow a feature to sort it in the order they should be read? The Necrosha just came out today and, while I purchased each one...I have to look up the order because it say Chapter one on several of the issues. You guys are the creators of these story lines and want your work to be read with full effect. Allow us to do so digitally.

Thanks for this comment.I was looking forward to buying an iPad 2 to read Marvel comics, since I don't have room for more paper issues. But now I think I'll postpone the iPad purchase until the subscription is available to iPad users.I'll try to find a different solution to my lack of space. This solution needs to relay on the online reading, of course not on allocating a new shelf in another room...

Marvel needs to seriously work on the issue of being able to allow Digital Comics Unlimited subscribers to view comics on the iPad. Perfect platform for viewing comics? Then allow subscribers to view comics as well. This is a no-brainer.

I would get a Marvel Digital subscription if it worked on the iPad app. Alas it doesn't so no moolah from me...just fix this issue by linking the accounts and you'll be raking in the dough...no one likes to pay 2x for the same issues!

Just got an iPad for Xmas and was excited to see a Marvel app. Then was crushed to see that my Marvel Unlimited Digital subscription is useless on the iPad. This, to use the vernacular, sucks big time. You have a loyal customer who pays for a year of digital comics access at a time, then deny access on a hot new platform. Please reconsider your policy immediately and make Marvel Unlimited available to iPad users. You will be true heroes and the revenue will keep on coming.

Any chance of getting Marvel Unlimited on a iPad app? This flash issue stinks.

I have bought close to 700 comics so far, but would like to see this app as an Andriod app. Any hope for that?If so, can you make it so it knows what comics I have puchased at the apple store?

You know after contemplating the app situation for a little while, I've decided, even though I LOVE reading comics on my iPad, that its way too expensive compared to the digital subscription available over the computer. Not only that, but if my ipad goes bad I have no way of accessing my comics anymore.

Nydrre

You know, I haven't been to this website until I downloaded the ipad app and bought about a dozen titles. It's bad enough that readers here have total access to numerous titles essentially for free, but I cannot view my ipad titles anywhere else but on my ipad. I should be able to get the app for my pc to read the titles I have already bought if I want, but I think the best bet is to link the app in with the digital subscription even if the have to up the subscription price.

First: I have a digital subscription, so paying another $1.99 for comics is not going to happen. Secondly, I have an iPhone with OS 3.1.3 (which should support app, yet comics crash the app. Hope this improves because its a great way for Marvel to transition into the digital age. Guess I will just stick to the version I can read on my laptop for now...

YADIU : yet another disappointed iPad user. Marvel, you need to let subscribers access old content via the iPad under the digital subscription. No way I'm gonna pay a 1.99 to buy what I can access on the web for free. The model that will work is all you can eat archives with half newsstand price current content.

Farix1200

I agree with all the comment, the current pricing of the app is very high. If the digital subscription is not available via Ipad, i'm seriously considering it's cancelation. A part from that, the app is great! good Job.

Come on Marvel. If you are going to charge $1.99/comic then you need to have all new comics available when they hit the stands. Otherwise what is the purpose. I have already read the titles that interest me months or years ago. Think about it!!!

mjrusso45
mjrusso45

Gotta have a sub model for the iPad app, and they need newer comics. Is this really hard to figure out?

Thanosi
Thanosi

The browser based Marvel viewer requires flash but the iPad app serves the same purpose without flash. To suggest that somehow the digital subscription service requires flash is erroneous, only the browser based viewer does. It is entirely possible to view comics on the iPad so it should be possible to enable the digital subscription for the iPad. The limit is not the technology but Marvel's willingness to make the service and the extra comics that come with it available on the iPad. It may well be the case that the amount of comics available is limited to how quickly they can be optimized for the iPad but even this should not limit the availability of a subscription over individual charges.

xforce_dac
xforce_dac

While I agree that it would be awesome to be able to use your digital subsubscription with the iPad, had any of you read the requirments you would have known that the digital subscription requires flash. Steve Jobs and the wonderful Apple team has determined that flash support on the iPad is not needed. I believe in time Marvel will make some sort of adjustment to overcome this limitation, to fault them for this problem at this time seems riduculous to me. A little effort up front could have saved you a lot of frustration.

thx_hobbes

How can they have a digital comic app that does not respect a digital subscription? Ridiculous!

Goodpoint

Thank you very much for this app, though I've got to support all the below said, comics are overpriced, for example I'm from Russia and I have to buy very expensive gift cards for iTunes from resellers and then I have to spend so much money on comics. Putting all these negative arguments aside, I have to admit a great work on this app, thank you!

Dear Marvel, I've been reading your comics since a small child in the '70s. I love the digital comics subscription and tell all my friends to check it out. I also tell them not to bother with the iPad app-- it's a ripoff. With an average story line covering 5-10 issues, and traversing several titles, soon the iPad comics would cost more than buying the print edition.Skip the bells and whistles and please just get the digital comics up on the iPad! I'm happy to be a loyal reader, but it seems you want me to just be an ATM.

mjrusso45
mjrusso45

Also add some way to digitally subscribe to current comics. And get the pricing more in line, and you'll have a money maker here.

FloodMan

Come On Marvel. Your decisions and pricing schemes are really testing my long term loyalty to your company (I'm near 40). Add the Digital Comics Subsciption to the IPAD and improve your Digital Service by providing more complete collections of series. If things don't improve there's a good chance my Digital Subscription will not renew in 2010.

mjrusso45

I lodged a question on the digital comics site and basically the answer i got back was "I have no information on this at this time". My first response was that the Digital Comics Unlimited is flash only and if the iPad gets Flash it will work. I can tell you the iPad will get Flash when Hezbollah celebrates Hanukkah.

This thread is the reason I will not be subscribing to Marvel Digital comics. Unless this is remedied. I was planning on subscribing for the Marvel Universe figure promotion (if they planned on doing that again). But if there is no Ipad access I won't.

I was floored when I went to download this app and realized that not only are there no subscriptions and the comics are $2 each(!!), but there's nothing newer than 6 months old available on there. I don't set foot in a comic shop anymore, but i would subscribe to Spider and a couple others if i could get it on the my iPad monthly (on time)

That's the consensus, Marvel. Are you going to respond to your loyal fans or just ignore our feedback like most soul-sucking corporations? What would Stan do?

SuperJoust

It's a beautiful app, but WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!The subscription model is perfect for me.When can we use our Digital Subscriptions instead? It's really the biggest thing stopping me from buying an iPad. I know people who would just rather try and find the comics illegally, but since I don't want to do that, why can't there be a reasonable legal way to do it?

alcebiades
alcebiades

It's truly a beautiful app. I don't currently have a digital sub, I definitely believe that the digital sub solution is the best option. It truly saddens me to see the double dipping method used here. While the app was surely expensive to develop and put out, it does not justify the pricing and the lack of digital sub usage. If the app did allow the digital sub usage, I would gladly get a digital sub, but as it is I will only download the free comics available. It would be nice to see an official response from the marvel forums crew on this too.

Silkius

Just wanted to add my 2c to the consensus here.I took out digital subs nearly 3 years agao, because I wanted to catch up and read a lot of my old faves. Like others, I was excited to see an app appear and rushed to get it, only to find it isn't for digi-subs! and Marvel want more money out of me to read things I already have?If this isn't fixed to include digital comics by June I will be dropping my subs and I won't be back. Small threat to such a big company I know, but if enough fans threaten it, maybe someone will hear us? Marvel has had a lot of money from me over the years (nearly 40) and I would've hoped showed a little more loyalty to those who have kept it afloat. Instead of just thinking up new ways to rip us off.

I'd pay $60 a year just to have access on my iPad because of the convenience and they just look awesome on the device. But $2 an issue is too much moolah for me to cough up on a regular basis.Marvel, when you go to a subscription model for the iPad, my money will be waiting for you.

Max_Yokell

Just got Ipad, I had not really read comics books in years my 5 year old loves them and I have started reading them to him. :) He is out of town for a week and I got addicted to Marvel app and started buying some comics on my own and ending up spending over $50 on comics and just got another Itunes $50 card.I started to look at this some more and found out about digital subscriptions and I realize as addicted as I this is what I am going to need, but they don't have them for the Ipad app which is the only way I would be able to read them. I can't spend that much time in front of a PC I need to be able to sneak them inbetween work and life.Is there any chance of a digital sub coming to Ipad.It is amazing how a 46 year old guy who hasn't read a comic book since he was 11 just got sucked right back in and I love watching my 5 year old enjoy it too, but come on Marvel I am going to go broke over this. :thor: :norinradd: :iceman: :hawkeye: :dead:  :cyclops: :cap: :beast: :hulk:

It's pretty funny how the consensus seems to be frustration that Digital Comic subscriptions do not work with the iPad; and yet, mocking all of these posters is a Marvel Digital Comics Subscription ad at the top of this forum screen.Well played Marvel. Nice addition of insult to injury.

It totally sucks that the digital subscription will not work on the iPad. Like others, I will not pay multiple times for the same content. Maybe DC will get it right.

Everything was working great, it was a slick app and now all of a sudden I seem to be in a Page view mode and can't get back.I do agree that it should tie in with the Digital subscription plan and likely won't be buying many comics but I'd at least like to get back to guided view to go through the free ones.

for me a Marvel app was going to be the thing I got the ipad for...but seeing how its set up...yeah...no. I dont mind the $2 price if it were for newer content(within six months) but I would also want to be able to use my current digital sub as well. Come on Marvel get it together there are tons of peeps waiting for you to get it right....

slimy_entrails

For some reason I assumed that the Marvel iPad app would include access to my digital subscription. My idea was that they would also offer newer (i.e. less than six month old) titles as single issue purchases. This would have actually been my main reason for purchasing an iPad, but as it stands, i really don't have any reason to now do so. I'm really hoping that this major oversight is corrected in the near future.

SuperJoust

I'm new to comics, but this app is so cool, it looks like it could get me hooked - except for the price. I haven't bought one single comic at that price, because I know I want to read like 30 this month. I'm sorry, but anything over 5 or even 10 bucks a month is a deal killer.

Seems like Marvel lacks a basic understanding of economics.$1.99 for a digital comic is roughly the cost of the per/issue of a printed copy for a yearly sub.Except with a digital copy you remove the costs to Marvel of paper, printing and distribution. You also remove value from me the customer as I can no longer resell, trade or just enjoy having a nice big collection on my shelf.Sorry Marvel, a digital one off issue is $0.99 as best and probably closer to $0.49.You're going to have to evolve into some sort of tiered structure I'd guess where you get a monthly fee for access to old as well as new and offer various price ranges. I.e., all new X-men titles for $10/yr. I'd probably end up reading more books online/iWhatever, I'd see more ads which raises the value for you, and heck, I'd probably spend more money than I do on print copies when you net it all up.Heck, bundle an online version for free with a print subscription. You could at least change the ads out on the online version every month and make more money that way. All with very little incremental cost to you.Until your digital product offering becomes more compelling, no money from me. Plenty of other alternatives out there.(And I didn't even address all the ill-will you seem to be addressing by locking content for the people who already pay for their digital subs).

I'm a big comics fan. My one star rating is not because of how well the app is, but is because of the Marvel's greedy business model. The internet and devices such as the iPad and the iPhone has allowed Marvel to deliver content to consumers without the substantial print and delivery costs that it cost them in the past. So instead of passing savings to the consumer, They charge subscription or individual costs for the print version. Charge subscriptions for their digital comics subscription. (separate from the print subscription). And now they are charging $2.00 for a digital download for iPod and Ipad versions. This is is poor business modal leaving their subscribers to purchase the same issue 3 times. The print subscription, digital subscription and the iPod/iPad digital downloads should somehow be consolidated. A print subscription costs $22.97 annually. A digital subscription costs $60.00 Annually. If they raised the prices of these to $30.00/year and $75.00 a year to include a "iPad/iPod subscription" then I can see swallow this, and Marvel would make significant earnings. And if they really want to sell the individually, then .$50c is about the right price for a digital copy that costs them nothing to duplicate. At $2.00 a copy for something that cost them next to nothing to duplicate, we are being ripped off.Time to consolidate Marvel.

This has to be the biggest kick in the crotch ever. Didn't the PSP get the ability to read your Digital Subscription last year? I suggested it to Marvel on the threads and to their Digital team over a year ago. Now they pull this double dipping crap on Digital Content! Download the App and give a 1 star rating and a negative review. In a couple of month my subscription will renew for the third time, I did not spend over $150 for DIGITAL access(this doesn't even count my $60-70 hard copy a MONTH expenditure, around 80% MARVEL titles). This company has really tested my loyalty with this and I plan on cutting back on something if this doesn't change.

This was the main thing I wanted for my new iPad. I was going to get a digital subscription to Marvel, pay my $60 a year and totally get back into the comics I've been missing. But no digital sub access on the iPad is heinous at best. Please Marvel. Make it work and win some new subscribers and revenue. :norinradd:

This is an appalling move by marvel. First $4 books in a recession now digital subs do not not work on the ipad app? The ideal soloution to this mess is to correct this mistake marvel. We would all be happy to pay for a "premium" account, maybe an extra $20 a year for ipad support of subs, then release new digitals day in date with shelf date for the price offered by dcbs, after 6 months then add them to the sub. THAT IS WHAT WILL KEEP YOUR COMPANY ALIVE NOT THE MOUSE.I HAVE STARTED DROPPING BOOKS.....ALL HULKS BOOKS NOW DROPPED DEADPOOL BOOKS DROPPED SECRET WARRIORS DROPPED.....im getting to annoyed with your pricing soon ALL MY BOOKS DROPPED AND DIGITAL SUB.......DROPPED

I do have a digital subscription, which really is a great way to catch up with some storylines or to reread some of your old comics.I also will buy an iPad for many different reasons. But I also think that the App needs some more functions. As it seems now that you have to buy single back-issues for 1.99 each will not be very appealing to a whole bunch of people. Either incorporate your current digital comic subscription somehow in there (Perhaps in a library mode where you can rent a maximal number of books for free and have to give them back before you can rent new ones) or you have to offer brand new comics via the app (perhaps in combination with a actual physical subscription).
