At a special event in New York City’s Midtown Comics today, Marvel and the New York City Fire Department were proud to debut the result of a great collaboration for an even greater cause: the new fire safety comic book featuring Marvel’s own Avengers. The unveiling drew a crowd of media coverage, including press from NY1, WABC, the Wall Street Journal, CUNY Student News, and more. Of course, the Marvel.com team was also on hand to bring you news about this amazing team-up - check out the gallery below for photos with video to come!

Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano, full-fledged super heroes Captain America and Spider-Man, and the FDNY’s very own Hot Dog the Dalmatian attended to stress the importance of fire safety to an assembly of over twenty third-graders from PS 51 Elias Howe. Commissioner Cassano addressed the children as a “lifeline” which, by sharing their new fire prevention knowledge with family and friends, would help ensure the safety of the entire city.

Captain America cited the new comic as a perfect way to learn valuable fire escape tips. It features the heroes pitted against the notorious Wrecking Crew, a band of criminals who start a fire in Avengers Mansion. Editor Bill Rosemann suggested that anyone who read the comic could learn how to escape the mansion and apply that same know-how to his/her own home in case of a similar emergency. Of course, as Commissioner Cassano explained, “the best way to extinguish a fire is to prevent it.”

To top off the event, Spider-Man encouraged everyone to continue reading after the comic’s cliffhanger ending at the FDNY Foundation’s website, in order to see just how he and his friends ultimately defeated the Wrecking Crew and concluded the story.

The limited edition FDNY Foundation/Marvel comic books will be distributed free at FDNY Fire Safety Education events, and at the FDNY Fire Zone in Rockefeller Center, while supplies last. Copies are also available at Midtown Comics, 200 West 40th Street.
