At the end of FEAR ITSELF #4, we found the players assembled, the situation grim, and the brawl very much on.

FEAR ITSELF #5, out August 10, delivers the goods.

“This is the part of the job I love,” says FEAR ITSELF writer Matt Fraction. “I got to write the ultimate Hulk/Thing/Thor brawl. I wish the issue was seven times longer. I could've written that fight forever.”

The Mighty Thor’s got his hands—and hammer—full when he faces off against the Serpent-turned Thing and Hulk, but the Thunder God’s got right and might on his side, not to mention a few years of experience fighting monsters. See, these combatants know each other, and have knowledge of their opponents’ tactics and strategies. It’s all a matter of history.

One of the greatest throw-downs between The Hulk and Thor came in the classic DEFENDERS #10, smack dab in the middle of the infamous “Avengers/Defenders War.” Lured into conflict by the combined evil of Dormammu and Loki, the two titans tussled until they couldn’t tussle no more, and though the winner went undeclared that day, the battle rocked the world.

The Thing and the Hulk’s skirmishes rank among the most legendary fights in the Marvel Universe, but perhaps the highlight of their enmity can be witnessed in FANTASTIC FOUR #25. Though trounced on that occasion by the green behemoth, The Thing picked himself up like a true hero and continued to fight to save New York from The Hulk. The Avengers swooped in to lend a few hands in FANTASTIC FOUR #26, giving the Mighty Thor another chance at besting The Hulk.

Interestingly, Thor’s never truly gone up against The Thing in honest battle, but let’s point you toward FANTASTIC FOUR #73 for a possible match. The FF thought Daredevil might actually be Doctor Doom and, once Spider-Man and Thor entered the picture, a misguided melee appeared on the menu. Thankfully, The Invisible Girl appeared to halt the fight before friends became foes and misunderstandings ruled the day.

With all that in mind, let’s take a look at the odds for each brawler in FEAR ITSELF #5, shall we?

THOR – 10 to 1

We’re talking about the mighty Thor here. With Mjolnir to aid him and the belief of his fellow heroes at his back, the Thunder God’s got the edge—we think. Granted, he’s just been beaten down by his own dad, Odin, and the Earth’s been scoured by Sin and the Worthy, but we believe Thor’s a shrewd customer and a monster masher of epic proportions. Verily, yon odds be with him!

THE HULK – 20 to 1

The Incredible Hulk—you know him, right? The guy who gets stronger as he gets madder? Well, he’s been changed by The Serpent into a member of the magical Worthy, and with hammer in hand he’s now a mean, green, destruction machine aimed right at Thor and anyone else who gets in his way. The odds say that the Hulk’s a winner, no matter his mindset, but we say somewhere deep inside him uneasily resides the soul of the good man called Bruce Banner. It’s going to be an interesting fight!

THE THING – 30 to 1

In his normal frame of mind, Ben Grimm’s a wrestler from the old school: get in there and come out the winner. With the Serpent’s influence upon him, he becomes an even scarier customer. Can he throw his weight—and his new hammer—around and beat back the legendary Thor? Well, let’s hope Ben’s brain still exists under the Worthy mask and we never truly have to see that answered.

“It's gonna infuriate some people,” says Fraction about the fight. “And I'll be a hero to others and it's not really Thing and it's not really Hulk and Thor's fighting wounded to begin with and The Serpent and blah, blah, blah and...and hey, kids, comics!”

This looks good. On an even day, these guys weigh in as on a par of strength, Thor has always been just a little better because of the hammer, but the latest incarnation of Hulk and Banner cooperating if not wholly merged while retaining his madder=stronger has made The Hulk (IMO) even tougher than Thor. But now that Thing has knocked Red Hulk into space and Red Hulk effectively beat Thor last year, the only thing (no pun intended) saving Thor is the subconscious humanity of both of these possessed monsters.
