With mutantkind bouncing back from the brink of extinction, one man has shown the willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure their survival.
That man? Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, the former figurehead of the mutant race whose recent actions have taken him from messiah to pariah. Now the self-appointed leader of a revolution, Cyclops has gathered a team of X-Men with one purpose: recruit the next generation first.
UNCANNY X-MEN, written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Chris Bachalo, marks the return of the long-running, flagship X-Men series, just in time to chart the course of mutantkind’s future.
The teleporting sorceress Illyana Rasputin, known as Magik stands out as the most mysterious member of Cyclops' team. Despite her long history with the X-Men, and her blood relation to the stalwart Colossus, Magik’s recent personal motives and extreme actions during
Brian Michael Bendis reveals more about Magik.
Marvel.com: Let’s move on to Magik. Magik is one of the few teleporters that is still active. Most of them were killed during Second Coming.

Marvel.com: It’s interesting that Magik has risen up to this Emma Frost/Magneto/Cyclops level of involvement. She was in the periphery of the New Mutants originally and then dead for a long time; now she’s in the big leagues.

Marvel.com: Magik grew up in Limbo. Does she identify as a mutant? She didn’t grow up on Earth and isn’t well socialized. What’s her investment?
Brian Michael Bendis: I’m not even sure how old she really is. What’s her mental state? Is she nine?
Marvel.com: She’s one of the more confusing characters.
Brian Michael Bendis: That’s what I like. There’s stuff there to examine. This is the great thing about writing the X-Men. Would I have invented a character this messed up? No. But having it in front of me gives me the opportunity to write some very interesting things about people that I would not have explored it on my own.
You’ve touched upon something very interesting there. How much of her does she say to herself, “Well, I’m a mutant.” She’s all these other things as well.

Marvel.com: She’s a sorceress. She was the ruler of Limbo for a while.
Brian Michael Bendis: This is a question that will be asked by many of these new mutants. “Okay, I’m a mutant. Does that have to take up every second of my day?” Look at it as a religion or a race. I’m Jewish, and I’m proud to be Jewish but I don’t do anything about it. How Jewish am I? I don’t know.
Marvel.com: Are you willing to risk your life and go to battle for them?
Brian Michael Bendis: Of course you want to say yes! And I do stand proudly as a Jew because I hate people who hate Jews. I want them to know. It’s an interesting thing and it’s something these new mutants will be dealing with. “I don’t believe in it and I don’t want to deal with it. Can I go back to my job?”
