When Earth’s Mightiest Heroes become intergalactic prisoners of a war bigger than anything they’ve ever faced, one of their own must rise into the role of universal protector like never before.
AVENGERS #19, coming this September from Jonathan Hickman and Leinil Francis Yu as part of Infinity, will place Captain Marvel front and as the team faces huge obstacles in their campaign to halt the Builders. With her teammates out of commission,
“She’s [Captain America’s] number two and the leader of one of the Avengers strike teams,” notes Hickman of Captain Marvel’s role. “In fact, Carol’s got so much going on that not only does her Infinity story span from the main book to AVENGERS, it also trickles into Kelly Sue DeConnick’s stories over in AVENGERS ASSEMBLE and CAPTAIN MARVEL proper.”

Yu’s cover to AVENGERS #19 afforded the artist his first opportunity to feature Carol in the new costume since she assumed as Captain Marvel so prominently.
“I’m very proud of it,” the artist says of his work. “That was based on Jonathan’s sketch, [as he is] also a gifted artist on top of being an ace writer.”
Being in the Infinity mix alongside the likes of Jim Cheung, Jerome Opena,
“Main challenge is the technical difficulties of coordinating five artists working on basically the same material spanning multiple books,” he explains. “On the upside, we get to share pages with each other and enjoy each other’s work before anyone else does.”

While the Avengers tend to their own obstacles, the Galactic Council recently introduced in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will also figure heavily into Infinity and potentially face a betrayal from within their ranks.
“The Galactic Council is a group of cosmic empires and civilizations that band together to ‘police’ their own interests in the universe,” Hickman elaborates. “However, with any collective, there will be certain groups that have competing interests—it’s the same here.”
