As the ancient race of Builders advance toward known space, a contingent of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes rally to meet the challenge.

This clash represents only half of the conflict set forth by Jonathan Hickman, Jim Cheung, Jerome Opena and Dustin Weaver in this summer’s INFINITY saga. The heroes remaining on Earth face the onslaught of an embittered Thanos. Divided and facing a two-front intergalactic war, can the Avengers hope to stand against the full force of an angry cosmos?

With Hawkeye and Black Widow embroiled in an interstellar rescue mission in the pages of AVENGERS ASSEMBLE and CAPTAIN MARVEL, the focus of SECRET AVENGERS shifts to their S.H.I.E.L.D. handlers.

“In SECRET AVENGERS, S.H.I.E.L.D. and company have to step out from the shadows,” says guest writer Ed Brisson. “It’s a prime opportunity for our core S.H.I.E.L.D. team—Nick Fury, Agent Coulson and Maria Hill—to step up and make sure there’s a home for the Avengers to come back to. They go from covert missions to straight up overt battles with Thanos' thugs in the streets of Brooklyn.”

“I love the way the Secret Avengers normally operate,” the writer continues. “But when their own planet is being attacked by hordes of alien invaders it only makes sense that S.H.I.E.L.D. would get out there on the front lines and defend their home. Added to the mix is a new superpower on their team, one who quite literally drops into their laps and helps fill the gap while most of the Secret Avengers are off planet.”

Of course, many heroes remain planet-side during the conflict, among them a newly formed team that will feature in MIGHTY AVENGERS; reluctantly drawn out of paternity leave, Luke Cage looks to assemble a group of heavy hitters, some street level and others universe-class.

Cage, along with She-Hulk, Falcon, Monica Rambeau, White Tiger, Spider-Man, the Blue Marvel, Power Man and others, represent a crucial opposition force in the war against Thanos and his generals.

Drawing on Cage’s Heroes for Hire background, MIGHTY AVENGERS writer Al Ewing envisions “a team of Avengers on the ground as part of the community; almost a community outreach thing.” The group comes into contact with the likes of Corvus Glaive and Thanos’ other lieutenants early and often.

The threat of Thanos’ assault on New York provides the inciting incident for the team’s formation, but for the Mighty Avengers, INFINITY will only be the beginning.
