Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch may have both clocked some serious time with the Avengers fighting alongside heroes like Captain America and Iron Man, but they got their start on the other side of the crime-fighting equation. Yeah, Pietro and Wanda Maximoff like to downplay their less-than-noble beginnings as members of Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Still, with the mutant siblings celebrating their 50th birthday this month, we just had to take a walk down memory lane! After all, what's a birthday party without a little embarrassment?

Way back in UNCANNY X-MEN (1963) #4, which hit the stands in January 1964, the super speedster Quicksilver and his probability-altering sister the Scarlet Witch first appeared alongside a couple of other Evil Mutants, Toad and Mastermind. Say what you want about the negative moral implications of being a bad guy, they all got to drink out of chalices!

But from the start, something didn't sit right with Pietro and Wanda's motives. They didn't really agree with Magneto's vicious view on humanity; the duo just owed the Master of Magnetism a favor because of that time he saved them from the standard pitchfork-wielding mob. Apparently Europe was just full of them in the sixties?

After Magneto took control of a small country, the X-Men showed up to remind him that dictatorships just aren't cool. In the ensuing skirmish, Scarlet Witch crushed Angel just as he started crushing on her.

After the X-Men ruined his party, Magneto threw a temper tantrum and activated a nuclear bomb that would destroy the teen team as well as the entire surrounding country. Despite being a member of the Brotherhood of
Evil Mutants, Quicksilver could not let hundreds of homo sapiens die. He used his super speed to destroy the bomb, thus foreshadowing his impending career change.

The two mutants reluctantly went on a few more evil missions until an offer from Captain America changed their destiny forever. The two became Avengers! Sure, they've both dabbled a bit with being anti-heroes or flat-out adversaries, but every character goes through their ups and downs over the course of 50 years! Is it Wanda's fault that one of those "downs" erased most of the mutant race? Maybe? Let's not discuss serious issues on their birthday!

Despite their rocky beginning, these are two characters that have stood the test of time. Happy birthday, Wanda and Pietro!

It's also sad that the pic at the top isn't even Wanda.  It's Loki in Sif's body, posing as Wanda.

Kinda sad they aren't doing any special stories for their anniversary. And, you know, Wanda is dead.
