Happy Birthday

Wish Northstar and Aurora A Happy 35th Birthday

This pair of French Canadian mutants first burst onto the scene in 1979, much to the X-Men's dismay!

As two founding members of the Canadian super team Alpha Flight, Jean-Paul and Jeanne-Marie Beaubier have become big time heroes in their home country. In 35 years of comics, though, their heroism hasn't been limited to just the Great White North. Both mutants have served as members of the United States-based X-Men team. Each sibling possesses the ability to fly at mind-boggling speeds, and their combined light manipulating powers make the twins form a truly explosive duo. However, the pair weren't always heroes. Just like the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver before them, these twin mutants also got their start as circumstantial adversaries of the X-Men.

Northstar and Aurora made their debut 35 years ago this month in UNCANNY X-MEN #120, part one of a two-parter that introduced Marvel readers to Alpha Flight. In the issue, the Canadian government decides to recollect some missing property – namely Wolverine. To make that happen, team leader James Hudson recruits five Canadian heroes-to-be.

With the X-Men grounded in Calgary thanks to Shaman's mystical weather manipulation, Alpha Flight began picking them off one by one. Nightcrawler didn't really stand a chance against the super-speeding sibings.

With key members of their team abducted by Alpha Flight, the X-Men are forced to go up against their Canadian counterparts in UNCANNY X-MEN #121.

Considering Sasquatch's brute force, Shaman's mastery of magic, Snowbird's bewildering shape-changing ability, and Weapon Alpha's super charged battle suit, Norhtstar and Aurora
sure did keep some powerful company. Also, happy 35th birthday, Alpha Flight!

As the two teams naturally paired off during the confrontation, Aurora found herself facing off against Nightcrawler – a pairing that the dashing blue swashbuckler quite fancied!

The scrappier Northstar played for keeps, though, and took out Storm with a super-speed punch – which didn't really earn him any points with Cyclops.

With tensions flaring, Wolverine acquiesced and turned himself over to Alpha Flight…for just long enough to stop the skirmish. By the time the X-Men boarded their Blackbird jet, Wolverine had already escaped from Alpha Flight's custody!

Northstar and Aurora have gone on to become mainstays of the Marvel mutant-verse, especially whenever Alpha Flight gets involved. On top of that, Northstar became Marvel's first openly gay super hero in 1992. He then made history again when he married his longtime partner Kyle Jinadu in ASTONISHING X-MEN #51! Happy birthday, Northstar and Aurora!
