Get ready world, because there's an all-new team of Ultimates in town and they're ready to take their brand of super hero action to the streets! In the wake of Cataclysm, Miles Morales and some of the Ultimate Universe's heaviest hitting teen heroes will band together to forge a new destiny for the long-running franchise. Written by Michel Fiffe with art by Amilcar Pinna, in April, ALL-NEW ULTIMATES will launch these upstart heroes' careers into the big leagues.
Since the cast of ALL-NEW ULTIMATES has been assembled from disparate parts of the long-running Ultimate Universe, odds are you might have missed out on some of their debuts. To get you caught up on all things ALL-NEW, here are all of the team members' first appearances and a crash course on what they've been up to.
Much like her main Marvel Universe counterpart, Ultimate Kitty Pryde debuted as a wide-eyed teen thrown into the wild world of the X-Men. With her training underway, Pryde became an active member of the X-Men – despite her mother's wishes to the contrary. She had a brief romantic relationship with Peter "Spider-Man" Parker right before a giant flood destroyed most of Manhattan. With the country thrown into anti-mutant hysteria, Kitty Pryde stepped up her game to become the leader of a band of X-Men freedom fighters – an experience that she'll no doubt bring to the Ultimates.
She may be called Black Widow now, and she might have been called Spider-Woman before, but the Ultimate Universe's Jessica Drew can trace her origin directly to Peter Parker. Yeah, she's a female clone of Spider-Man created by Doctor Octopus to work for the CIA. Drew escaped and revealed her identity to Spider-Man, taking her first step towards becoming a hero in her own right. Since then, she's taken on evil corporations and joined up with both S.H.I.E.L.D. and the previous incarnation of the Ultimates. She's even acted as a mentor to the new Spider-Man, Miles Morales.
The mutant Lana Baumgartner started out as one half of a mother/daughter criminal duo – an unsuccessful pair, at that. The two got arrested after one of their first heists, and Lana's mother ended up in jail. Being a minor, however, Lana ended up in the custody of her grandmother. She then enrolled at Peter Parker's high school. Even though she tried to keep a low profile, she still ended up running afoul of Cloak and Dagger – two people she now has to work alongside in ALL-NEW ULTIMATES.
Miles Morales debuted in the midst of the fallout from Peter Parker's death. The newly powered teen donned a makeshift Spider-costume and tangled with the Kangaroo on the streets of New York City. Morales' origin unfolded in the pages of ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN, wherein readers learned that a radioactive spider from Osborn Industries crawled into the thief known as Prowler's bag. The spider bit Prowler's nephew, turning the mild-mannered Miles Morales into the all-new Spider-Man. In his relatively short career as a super hero, Miles has encountered great loss (his mother) and earned great respect (from the Ultimates).
Cloak and Dagger exploded onto the scene hot on Bombshell's heels. The two teens sought information about their time as the Roxxon Corporation's captives and guinea pigs. The dark period in their lives left the pair exposed to dark matter, thus giving both of them complimentary super powers. Eagle-eyed readers probably recognized Dagger's cameo appearance in ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #87, where Tandy Bowen appeared as the student council president of Spider-Man's high school. Tandy might have to put those people skills to work to keep this ragtag team together. To see this teen team in action, keep an eye out for ALL-NEW ULTIMATES #1, on sale April 9!
